Note
(sick) (rest day)

More severe diarrhoea after bedtime last night.

Will starve myself today to try & kill whatever the problem is - but I have no idea what I ate to do this to me.

not sure how much more bad luck & unhappiness i can handle, tbh

im' not writing this to amuse or cheer anyone else up, btw.
7 PM

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Note. after a small meal after self-starving all day in bed, another hugely horrible splattering in the bog.

Over to my medical centre tomorrow, then. as whatever I've got, it's not good.
£23 on Nov classic entry last night, probably squandered.

Just like 2017.

Note
(injured) (sick)

Severe diarrhoea last night. as in, proper accident.

What next?
Honestly, I'm on the brink of throwing the towel in/ raising a white flag.

edit: bed in the afternoon, where i slept. GOd knows how the OMMers are feeling if I'm like this after a 4km jog!!! (and the screaming shits)

Running 20:39 [2] 3.9 km (5:18 / km) +64m 4:54 / km
(injured) shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

Steady jog out to see how my painful LH buttock was

Not bad, but not great. No definite answers.

SI pinged as did upper back shortly after finishing.

See how I am tomorrow. Feeling is i will only enter Nov classic & not risk the urban in Southampton the day before.

Really sad & fed up & under it all the effing time, not happy that trying to run the CSC final last w/e has brought on - out of the blue - yet ANOTHER problem. Why not give up and try golf or guitar playing or tiddlywinks or something ?Can't climb - shoulder been shot for 2 months now, and nowhere near better :(

If this is age, then I'm old & i hate it.

Cycling 55:00 [3] 17.0 km (3:14 / km) +125m 3:07 / km
(injured)

Slight hangover. LH buttock more painful today than I'd expected. oh dear.

Cycle ride, 45 mins + 10 mins, so 55 mins.

Stopped for an hour at top of Stoke Park.

In between, did a GPS map walk within wooded north part of SToke Park, as an experiment. Will see how that went when I've photoshopped it with existing BOK map. Perhaps Charles can put on an Urban/Park series event here in the summer?

Walking 1:10:00 [1] 5.0 km (14:00 / km) +80m 12:58 / km
(injured)

Osteopath - (Rupert, not Lisa the brutal one) - re. SI issue from last Sunday - some acupuncture, and pushing around, and tissue massage. Says it should be fine, jog on Sunday maybe? Very little "trauma" - mostly a spasm. As i thought.

Lovely day - walk on Stoke Park / Pur Down, with BOK's updated 2016 map - took a biro.... next thing... i'm remapping it. Possibly a bit much post-treatment.

Thursday Oct 26, 2017 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Rest day - unless you count cycling 30-35 mins to & from Southmead hospital for a VERY expensive (but on the NHS) scan of my left shoulder, which has been hurting for 2 months. But not hurting so much now :) They weighed me - 69kg! Shit - what a bloater. I was 64-65kg back in July/August at the depth of my stomach surgery troubles..... time to diet?

LH SI joint / buttock feeling a lot better - cycling seemed OK. Hoping osteopath will help tomorrow. Really hopeful for November classic .....

Wednesday Oct 25, 2017 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Not only injured, but found out today that i am carrying a parasite (GP took one minute to diagnose me, after I moaned for about 5 mins).

So I spent afternoon fumigating my bedroom, bathroom, including all towels, linen, bedclothes, and scrubbing the surfaces. Ran out of washing powder.

Ostoepath doesn't want to see me in case he catches my parasite tomorrow (they are infectious). Joy.

LIfe's a scream, eh. Fun all the way to the grave.

Tuesday Oct 24, 2017 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Still very painful in LH buttock.

managed a short walk to the Snuff mills valley with Liz, but had some issues getting home again. Ice.

Seeing osteopath on Thursday, but am not hopeful he'll have any answers.

Monday Oct 23, 2017 #

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Bedridden all morning.

Maxed out on painkillers.

Managed LIDL in afternoon.

Shit.

12 PM

Orienteering race 1:00:21 [5] 7.9 km (7:38 / km) +254m 6:35 / km
(injured) shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

Compass Sport Cup final, DEVON OC, "Virtuous Lady"
Blue men, 6.7km 265m, 7th, 60:21

Early start 6:15am alarm, coach 7:20 to Devon.

Started well, felt great cruising down the paths & open areas towards no 1 on a steep muddy slidy "treacherous" slope.
By no 2, my sacroiliac joint (LH side-ish) had basically "gone", and i was in a lot of pain in LH buttock, dropped to path by river for no 3 & found i could only jog, so prepared to drop out; saw Richard Cottle approach no 3 from no 4 (he did 2-1-2-4-3-4); & had caught him 6 mins already.

Told him i was on the verge of dropping out, but he persuaded me to stick at it, so together we worked, to no 9. My pain was severe on downhills / banks; bad on the flats; bearable going uphill. So on the uphill bit from no 9 I "decided" to try to drop Richard. As I'm "apparently" a "top south west M50" (keep deluding myself). I slowly crept away from him uphill (making no impression on Charles just ahead, mind).

I stuck at it, pretending to be Phil Murray pre-July2017. Richard felt i was going the wrong way (I wasn't; think i came 2nd on no 10) and did his own thing, losing 15 minutes (bye bye). I carried on. The map around nos 11 & 12 was WELL dodgy, I stopped still, completely confused - lost? Then suddenly there was the control - shit! . Similar at no 12, except this time I was wayyyy too high. Very narrow escapes there ; lucky? Or let down, as were many, by poor vegetation mapping there?

After spectator control, I tried to speed up; it hurt; i made an annoying 30sec error at no 18 then was finished really. Not a good result - my worst for 3 years. But considering my past 3 months..... in fact, did I aim too high?

BOK won, tho & that was all it was about. GREAT STUFF. Great atmosphere on coach on way home. Respect to all the clubs, from up North, who came down - INT won the Trophy, which really pleased me.

Liz's (to moan, basically) - then home - hot bath - painkillers - hot water bottle - shouting in agony. A desperate night.

Now injured.

BOK classroom courses all day - Organise an Orienteering event, and Event Safety Workshop (Mike Forrest)

Both good & worthwhile ; more UBOC people there than anyone else , which was good of them!

Running 33:30 [3] 6.5 km (5:09 / km) +110m 4:45 / km
shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

Steady run on Pur Down, with map.

Felt a little queasy, and light headed. Rest now til Sunday.

Mapometer says 110m climb - really? yes was steep attaining pur down, but even so.

Orienteering 47:30 [4] 7.1 km (6:41 / km) +191m 5:54 / km
shoes: Mud Claw 333

Clifton Downs - re-run the parts of the course from 10 days ago ("Green") that I hadn't done (due to inexplicable achilles pain) & also being late for marshalling, due to no-one going off before 12 noon, due to no Phil Warry. And feeling awful (then, not now).

NOTE: the map was inconsistent - I wondered why I was struggling 10 days ago - the black X means seat - except when it doesn't (eg. gym equipment). Black X is NOT on the legend - WHY NOT? And if a seat's on the ground, it may or may not be on the map. Sorry, but that's not good enough - esp. when there are beginners around.

Leg 3, which I'd really ballsed up, in 1:22 (against 3:30 - 2 mins lost)
Also no 6 - re-ran, the map made no sense to me, showing "semi open" all the way to the road when in fact there's a canopy. 2:42 vs. 4:50 - another 2 minutes lost.

Then re-ran from no 9 to finish, pretty much at "race pace", in 21:35.

So that plus earlier split 23:47 less the errors taken out giving almost exactly 41 minutes.

That's not too bad; Adam did 32, but surprisingly 3 mins behind Matthew Pickering, who I beat last Saturday at NGOC. And behind Nick Gracie. Hmm. http://www.bristolorienteering.org.uk/sites/defaul...

Worthwhile. Plus some warmup /down. Good jaunt. Felt vastly more at home with M&C today than 10 days ago. Too late for CSC on Sunday? May do some more on thursday, on PurDown, or something.

Cycling 1:01:23 [3] 18.4 km (3:20 / km) +161m 3:12 / km

Bike ride, north this time, vague plan of following cycle path signs. Windy - esp going back (stopped at 30 mins & turned round). had to pedal hard & change down gears on the downhill going back across Stoke Park / Pur Down.

UWE, Harry Stoke, Stoke Gifford, Little Stoke, Bradley Stoke. All the Stokes! Confused? I am.

An hour's outdoor activity, anyway, in between hurricane Ophelia's attacks. (red sun / yellow sky this morning)

Orienteering race 55:48 [5] 8.3 km (6:43 / km) +277m 5:46 / km
shoes: Inov-8 Mudclaw 265 Blue

NGOC league, danby lodge, Blue, 6.9km / 190m
55:48 / 6th

Wasn't sure, after last night's crap effort, whether to do Green (4.5km) or Blue (6.9km). Rather hungover too, 2½ pints of unusual beer last night.

Opted for Blue to see if i could cope. A sort of dry run for CSC final's Blue Men course next w/e.

Went OK (no major ballsups), felt much better at first, but was pooped after 40 mins & was forced to walk bits - even the flats.

As result, scalped by two ex-BOK "miniatures", Jim Bailey & Oliver Tonge. FFS! TWO M14s!

2 years ago it was Zac Hudd, before that, A Damp Otter (*), & BenMali, and now them! What next? Guy & Ruby Owen? Ella May Rush? Yes - it will happen. It's just a case of "when".

At least i can still burn off ALL their parents. Yeah. I've still got it. OK, Caroline Potter runs faster than me, but usually in the wrong direction, to my benefit. Humbug.

My running friend Paul & his son, Joe, won the yellow, then Paul went back out & won the Orange. I blame the coaching ;)

* - Adam now in a league of his own, easily the best here today.

Tim Tett said "little & often" so out i went today, for a shuffle. Having had a tiring day beetling around doing stuff & getting hungry

Even so, didn't expect to feel so crap.

Longgggggg way to go. May have to consider only Green course again tomorrow :(

Running 26:37 [3] 4.6 km (5:47 / km) +83m 5:18 / km
shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

Easy run; more exploring neighbourhood ; no RH achilles pain, still some inner knee /top of calf niggling, which also bothered me on satruday

Got a bit lost in a field - wasn't where i thought i was.

https://www.strava.com/activities/1225306164

Note: not sure about flat living. Listening to the dysfunctional couple upstairs walking around at all hours, and hearing their voices sometimes, is...... hmmm.

Lots of really nice houses round here - love the neighbourhood. Day dreaming about a) selling Clifton flat, b) buying a fabulous house here, (with the proceeds) c) letting out this awesome flat for my income. This, seriously, could work. The trumpet player in my band is a partner in an accountancy firm, & he showed me I could reduce my capital gains tax by a HUGE amount, if i sell the Clifton place (which I've now had for ..... over 23 years!!!!!).

See how things go. Blimey, 23 years. Where did those years go.
7 PM

Cycling 1:03:00 [2] 15.5 km (4:04 / km) +120m 3:55 / km

Cycle to southville (tea), Cube cinema (climbing film), then home after 10pm.

60 or 65 mins total i think.

Note
(rest day)

Gig last night, home 1:30 am - shattered.

Note to self: no runs / races on gig days, please. I'm too old.

anyone who thinks a Green on Clifton Downs is a real easy option (I did a blue in 1993 - 6.6km in 33 minutes...... ) should see how long some people took to do the Green yesterday. Good course, but not what was expected.....

Orienteering race 26:26 [3] 3.4 km (7:46 / km) +71m 7:02 / km
(injured) shoes: Mizuno Wave Harrier 3

Clifton/Durdham downs Green course - how hard can it be? Peasy, no?

Disaster. RH achilles bad. - why? as soon as i started jogging to start. WT actual F? comments on strava.

wet; slippery; scale 1:5k & detail too much for old eyes; barely found no 1 clean, let alone 3 & 6 (minutes lost). Retired, as was clearly due to be late for marshalling changeover, and also gig later was on my mind (being late for)

(as it happened, I got relief early from marshalling, but that was only cos a friend saw my plight).

Running 40:38 [4] 8.0 km (5:05 / km) +134m 4:41 / km
shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

Nice day, explore Frome valley, which has climbing, & an orienteering map called "Oldbury Court". Took 1:25k OS printout. Came back via the very scenic Frenchay Village. Lots of grass to run on, too. a damp otter is right - the running / training possibilities around here are great. I'm going to have no shortage of places to train on. Vastly better than BS3 or BS14! :-)

Kms seemed to be chugging by in sub-5, so kept it up really, tho wasn't feeling perky. Two slow kms were uphills, and i found them quite hard.

I don't feel fit at all, but i guess this is quite a good sign?

also 1.2km jog at end as by 8km / 5 miles I'd had enough, so stopped, stretched, rested , then trundled back home (new flat - noisy people above and below - oh dear). Got the drill out & joined in! Haaaa!

Swimming 25:00 [3] 0.6 km (41:40 / km)
(injured)

Osteo suggested a swim, for my knackered shoulder. And could help my abs / "core" post -operation.

Not a great success. Shoulder too painful for breast stroke really, so listed to the right side to swim. 25% of this was front crawl, terribly - and this was also a bit much (pulling) on my stomach - which is scarred inside as well as out.

May go again , but probably not for 2 weeks.

25 lengths , with 3 "rests" . Poor.

Running 40:57 [3] 7.1 km (5:46 / km) +180m 5:07 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Harrier 3

Pur Down / Stoke Park UBOC map run (this will happen a lot), in fell shoes, quite muddy, brambly etc. in shorts. Some nav included. no compass though.

Utterly horrified at how slow 1st 2 kms were, so tried to trundle along for a 4:45 along the ridge.

BIG climb to the monument, by which time i knew i wasn't in terrble shape like saturday.

Felt MILES better than saturday - great! Let's not crack open the champers just yet tho.
