Weekly update.

Progress - I can now walk - but not far; wash up , shower, even cook (!), go up a flight of stairs. I am off the morphine now.

I cannot drive, and so getting to any shops is a real problem/impossible. Am reliant on friends bringing stuff round. I'm now an Uber client - have twice had to go back unplanned to GP to get manky dressings changed. Taxi. ££££. (amazingly lucky - no infection occurred - despite waking up with nightclothes & sheets soaked & sticky with wound discharge earlier this week. Now under control after a dodgy 48 hours.)

Operation - Laparotomy (google image it) - was 2 weeks ago. 6 weeks off driving, so I make that 4 weeks to go...

Illness started 3 weeks ago.

Without Liz (constant help) & Clio (dropped everything & came round to dress my wound the other evening), this would have been massively, massively harder.

Those who know me well - having ME/CFS for 6 years was immeasurably worse than this. Yes really. Less acute, but horrendously worse.

I had already bought flights to Geneva for 7th August for 8 nights, and I am hopeful I can make it - no heavy bag tho - but won't bring anything anyway as no way can I climb / via ferrata / do big days out. Accepted this 100%.

I have lost over 3kgs, now 66.3kg. oh dear. I'm also teetotal. Planning on breaking this in Switzerland on august 12th (my birthday) - will have been over a month dry by then :-) #achievement

(injured) (sick) (rest day)

Discharged from hospital last night after 8 nights. The NHS were wonderful.

operation on my stomach was last Friday, removing / resectioning about a foot of small intestine which was found to be abnormal & causing a partial blockage & hence the problems i'd had the week before.

it took 2 days & three scans to find this out. & when they did, I was considered "emergency". I had a general anaesthetic & was under the knife for 2 hours.

recovery will be weeks- month or two; no driving either.

still on loads of painkillers eg morphine, and my belly looks like it's been butchered, which of course it has been. showered myself today - big milestone!

I was on drips & other things (catheter ...) for 3 days, so sadly I've lost weight and putting it back on, and rehabbing, is priority.

If anyone can visit/ help, next week, south east Bristol, please contact me, as I am unable to shop / run errands - had to be pushed out to the taxi yesterday in a wheel chair by a porter . sobering. Such a "fit" guy!

sometimes you've just got to laugh. (.. except even that hurts! ....)
("He literally split his sides laughing.....")

Much worse today. Blood sugar at highest level ever. feel terrible . awake since 5am with stomach pains.

GP talking about admitting me for diabetes related complications from my gastric virus

I now have diarrhoea too, but not severely

(injured) (sick) (rest day)

Stomach & blood sugars worsened yesterday; rang 111 they got me into a surgery quick.

Nothing serious found, thankfully, but told that the likelihood is I have a diabetes-inflaming gastric virus & expect to be sick for a week, maybe 10 days.

Told to go home & rest up. still struggling with food & fluids. and feeling rotten 24/7.

Also: calf a bit sore all over - oh well. not sure if pull-related or DOMS or knotting. Academic.

Running 24:00 [2] 3.6 km (6:40 / km) +40m 6:19 / km
(injured) (sick) shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

ANOTHER bad night; losing hope here. Felt shit.

tried to "run off" the constant- nausea & feelings of upsetness in stomach, in 26 degree heat, also calf rehab (a jog) which i consider to be important, was overdue as nothing since Wednesdays jog/walk urban O.

calf survived, tho i walked twice, despite 2 twinges.

felt just as shit afterwards as before. will call GP tomorrow. no idea what's happening to me. blood sugars incredibly high after run. that's the opposite of what's supposed to happen...... (mmol 15-17 - shit)

:-(

Another bad night, felt rough; still very much off my food & blood sugar wayyyyyy too high. Diabetes sucks.

Hope i'm coming out the other side now, as once up & about, I felt nothing like as bad as 24 hours ago. Managed to get to local shops for supplies. (rather than going back to bed & sleeping)

Woke 4:45am feeling very sick & with stomach pains

Spent morning in bed with very high blood sugar (which dropped as i recovered; had to eat almost nothing to achieve this, tho). WOC relay a good distraction - there were times when i was glad to be at home , ill, rather that out there, getting lost in public.

Yorkshire w/e canned :(

Orienteering race 46:00 [1] 5.0 km (9:12 / km) +40m 8:51 / km
(injured) shoes: Brookes Ravenna 8

BOK Urban, Clevedon, Green, hot evening, jogged / walked it but still made 2 huge errors at no 2! (one being the cut through that wasn't, to east of the line - affected a lot of Blue runners too; check out Peter Webb's split on this leg! ;)

Calf didn't hurt & I wasn't going to do anything that would risk making it hurt.

Hip / buttock sore, but this seems to be a feature of who I am now. Great.

Chat to Mike Forrest re. taking on as summer series coordinator in 2018. I guess i should do it.....

very pleasant evening, pub afterwards; good to see Jukola lot again. Sad to say farewell to Mark B., that's it, he's left us forever! :(

13th/ 37, quite chuffed with that.

Sport climbing in Gilwern hill, south wales, opposite Blorenge, all day with Steve.

Banged out 7 routes, but we both got shut down by some tricky routes & had to retreat, the shame.
