Compass Sport cup final. Long Valley, SN, Blue Cup.
Terrible start - Mark Bu's car was locked and my stuff inside it, which led to an epic 30 minute panic trying out all VW keys from key dump, searching around the car etc etc until Mark Bo. found them in a wheel (that we'd all checked!!!). Left me with little time to calm down, tho i tried.
"Safe route to no !" i was told - I agreed. I would take a safe route. There was no safe route. Tried to go west but deep water & the start triangle being away from the actual start (!) meant i was unsure where in the woods i was. I kept finding otther controls that clearly weren't mine. The forest road beyond was no use as it had no way of knowing where on it you were. I couldnt' see the gully on my map as the control circle part-obscured it. Evetually I ran north til I relocated on a very long gully, then paced down & finally found control. 4 mins lost. Mark S, & Clive also lost many mins here. If anyone knows me on facebook, see my GPS spaghetti there. "It's over!". and it's hardly begun.
Shattered already, I just tried to run nornally, and, to my surprise, very quickly, a pleasant and happy rhythm settled in, as I nailed most controls fine, made my own luck a few times, was accurate with compass. Due to no running since Tues, I felt sprightly, so bounced along happily, feelign fit. Quentin, on a a slightly differnt course (not that i knew it) "caught" me at no 15 but to my alarm I actually beat him into the control site - oops. Then - feelign extremely fit - I held him off across the woods & forest road crossings en route to 16 (where i got a bit lucky - but again, made my own luck, actually stopping and checking forest road direction against my compass).
Later, 17-23, the strain of mentally concentrating started to get to me, but i held it together despite the offputting loudspeaker, and made no cock ups. Leg of the day was in fact 22 when i was up the short hill in no time at all and onto the open area where i simply ran everyone i could see down. Apparently i won this 2:38 leg by 18 seconds!
Flat out on run in but no idea how my mate Martin Ward took 7 seconds out of me? Tim tett despite 5 hours sleep & a The Who gig in Manchester the night before, had a more flawless run & was way ahead, but Clive, Charlie (cold), and Mark S all had mediorce runs. Disappointed to be only 6th and beaten by 2 M55s.
