Running race 19:30 [5] 5.0 km (3:54 / km)
shoes: Saucony Fastwitch 6

Aztec mob match 5km, Bradley stoke - goal was sub-20 in comfort, but heatwave & an evil dry wind put paid to the anticipated pain-free road run experience.

Set off with Lee from my club, aiming for 3:55 mins km. 1st in 3:51, then 3:56, then put in "boot" a bit and went away from him - 3:52.

Not comfortable.

3:56, 3:54 (which hurt- OUCH), to come home in 19:30. Outsprinted. woman Vet35 2 places ahead collapsed in funnel & required first aid.

3rd Vet50, increadibly, tho the 2 ahead (16:32 & 17:47) means I really was not deserving of any "prize". / "podium".

Legs seized up with dehydration & speed pain , and I hobbled to warm down.
Beer & painkillers required urgently.

Success. Due to sensible pacing. Every1 beat me, and I don't care. Another rstep on the road back to ... something. Not sure what. Alps trip looms, and I'm really into climbing at the mo.

Note

Climbing - Cheddar gorge with lodger Dan.

some easy routes for his sake, but also a 6a+ and 6b (later) - both led clean 1st go (repeat ascents).

Feeling very at home on the rock. Tired from w/e though.

7 routes.

Saturday Jun 27, 2015 #

Note

Climbing - Cheddar - Space tourist , plus 4 other routes from 5 to 6b.

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10153443...

really brill day - felt weightless after park run, really good stuff. Hanging off holds, no problems.

I'm climbing better (for me), than running; yet compared to the "best", I'm still a better runner. / O-er.

Work that one out, people. Or, frankly, don't.

9 AM

Running race 20:59 [4] 5.0 km (4:12 / km) +105m 3:48 / km
shoes: Saucony Guide 7

Ashton Court park run,
Felt tired, hate that hill at 9am! tottered up it. trying to be efficient, just being shit.

Turnaround in 11:53 I think. Leading lady caught me, but I suddenly accelerated just before turn & dropped her for good.

Deliberately not running too hard on descent - on grass for a lot of it.

Rubbish. 23rd. had to sprint to break 21 mins. Paul Deaton 2 mins up!!!! in 6th!!!
The only other thing of note was that a guy just in front of me obviated the need for a "sprint finish" race by stopping & vomiting violently onto the grass. My sentiments exactly. "Keep it going mate!" I shouted as he projectiled another load onto the ground.

18:47 last year.

oh dear.

(rest day)

Hamstrings not stiff anymore - rock climbing sorted that out. As it would. Climbing's good like that....

(RRR - tell Kim if you read this!) (also that my hammy did heal in 6 weeks as she said it would - thanks again)

Thursday Jun 25, 2015 #

Note

That's more like it. Hello 2015. Again.

A brilliant day, spent rock climbing in Cheddar gorge (8 routes from VDiff to 6b). Nailed every one.

Then playing guitar in my band all evening followed by beers. And crisps.

Unticked ill & injury box. I'm back! Lock up your mothers.

(hamstrings a bit stiff from last nite's Urban O.... but..... whatever?)

6 PM

Orienteering race 37:11 [4] 4.7 km (7:55 / km)
(sick) shoes: Brooks Ravenna 5

BOK Urban - Long Ashton, middle (again) due to still coughing - cough definitely on the mend - also very snotty / blocked up. Trying to "run it off" - but note - ONLY cos I am feeling well again. ie. I do not feel "ill" any more.

Started steady, caught a guy a minute by about no 4, he was younger & looked fit (RAFO?). Predictably, had trouble dropping him as he latched onto me. Had to run faster than I wanted - leading to sore hamstrings (both) - to finally open a big enough gap - passing Jackie en route & dumping him on her.

Sloppy on last 4 controls. as testified by the splits, my foot was hurting & I'd had enough by then. justifying my decision to "only" do the middle. I "won", just, so no doubt will attract a throng of accusers chanting "pot hunter", or whatever.

Helped collect controls including trying to locate a missing SI unit with Matt Leathwood; until dusk! Luckily it turned up later so a waste of effort (but not really as quite pleasant).

Unlike 2 weeks ago, my mins /km do NOT compare at all favourably to the Long course. - atrocious, in fact. Hmmm. Would have put me down in 7th-10th.

Note
(injured) (sick) (rest day)

Still coughing. Busy day doing "stuff". Need another rest day to shake the cough / sinus blockages.

Sleeping badly. Still on codeine & Nytol. ON the mend, though....

Hamstring feels ready to go. Need to run again - soon!

Monday Jun 22, 2015 #

Note
(injured) (sick) (rest day)

Cough improved, tho had a relapse in the middle of the day & coughed up green phlegm.

Then felt a bit better and cycled to Clifton for the Nepal fundraiser. Excellent evening. Cycled home again. Hardly coughing at all!

Come on come on. nearly there......

Leg feels really good now.....

(Blood sugar insanely high today, worrying, as I'm now on daily oral medication.... hoping this will drop as I recover & return to exercise, be that running or climbing all day which is also good for depleting blood glucose... cos I ain't gonna live a long life with 15.5 mmol/l sugar in my blood, that's for sure!!!).

DIABETES IS A FUCKING BORE

Sunday Jun 21, 2015 #

Note
(injured) (sick) (rest day)

Cough improving. Injury worsening due to lack of mobility due to being ill for 10 days.

Blood sugars very high. peeing all night - 6 times? Suspect the ASDA brand "lem sips" I'm having are laced with sucrose.... bastard.

Grim.

Saturday Jun 20, 2015 #

Note
(injured) (sick) (rest day)

Recovering from gig.

Nightmare pond issue - at least 100 frog embryos / tadpoles dead.

Another emergency trip to Pound shop & then garden centre. Probably could have done without this . Coughing & LUNGS SORE.

Also, new lodger moved in. Dan. Neighbour moving one door! He cooked an amazing meal. Just what I needed.

Slept awfully. Sore lungs, and headaches from all the coughing.

Friday Jun 19, 2015 #

Note
(injured) (sick)

Saw GP - despite green output, he said I had "no sign of chest infection" - quite astonishing how the definition of chest infection changes over the years. So he point blank refused to give me antibiotics, and I got some codeine to help with the splitting headaches & night cough that I'm suffering all the time.

If I'd had a job, I'd be looking at 2 weeks off sick here.

Felt a bit better, easy day, resting after lunch, but then : second gig of the week (and second gig ill).
Two brilliant gigs - ill for both. So gutted.

Went amazingly well, so I again just took painkillers & got into the spirit. Two of my solos brought the house down. No idea how I played them like that. Defiance?

I 'll pay for it though. Bed 1:15am, sleep well after 2am, up every hour to pee, which is a symptom of Diabetes, illness elevates blood sugar levels so I dread to think how horrendously high mine must have been...... Gawd my health....... :-\

Thursday Jun 18, 2015 #

Note
(injured) (sick) (rest day)

Ill.

Coughing up green & sometimes red/pink flecked sputum.

If anyone this year thinks "beating me" is good, or "cool", read back to the year I've had to date, one good month (February).

The rest a write off.

Great idea, 2015!!! - no work = retired = get super fit & excel at all my hobbies.

Someone saw that coming.

Wednesday Jun 17, 2015 #

Note
(injured) (sick) (rest day)

Coughing a fair bit, not feeling so awful tho. Resting & pond (watching tadpoles grow into frogs - one actually crawled out of the pond!). PLus pottering in garden. I like retirement.....

Injured leg feels good. Could this be it....! Ah - I have a cough. OK. No running. Or climbing.

TRavel back from the Midlands. Very tired but a lot better than yesterday. Miracle.

Shattered in evening.

Note
(injured) (sick)

Still ill, not well enough to go to Warwickshire but no dep could be found. So I had to go. ......

Drove up, stopping 3 times. feeling awful.
Got there, went to bed.
Soundchecked, then went back to bed.
Got up, had free meal, went back to bed (and a bath - luxury hotel) (Forest of Arden Marriott) (very golf-y). event was Securitas Commuinity Awards annual conference/dinner dance. black tie. lots of big bald security men types around but at least they brought their other halves ;)

Played gig 23:00 - 01:30hrs. Sat on chair on stage, which isn't very rock & roll, but also decent aircon meant I / we didn't over heat.

Event was the biggest payer ever, and came with perks like free rooms, half board, ie. free hotel meal with drink in evening (Lime soda for me :(

Took vast quantities of medicinal drugs - which probably kept me awake as struggled to sleep in my gorgeous room! They worked tho - I survived & was able to play the gig.

Sunday Jun 14, 2015 #

Note
(injured) (sick) (rest day)

"Incipient" cough worsened during night, & today a complete write off ill.

Very unhappy as tomorrow is supposed to be one of the biggest gigs (and best-paid) of my musical career to date.

Horrible, and worrying, as I may *have* to play it - cancelling is NOT an option.

BASTARD. (ill health). Remind me not to waste any of my remaining life/health in any sort of "office" environment. Life's too short/ YOLO.

Slept part of afternoon - out like a light. Lemsips.

PS. just to complete my day, I see my BOF ranking has dropped to 1552nd, I'm now ranked 57th in BOK. NIce. BOK SELECTORS TAKE NOTE. I was 3rd in the Midland champs & 3rd M50 in the Chiltern challenge this year, so what's that about?

Running race (ParkRun) 22:03 [4] 5.08 km (4:20 / km) +122m 3:53 / km
(injured) (sick) shoes: Saucony Guide 7

Really bad nite - woke every hour, throat / chest sore / painful :( - ill?

Ashton Court parkrun. 1st parkrun in nearly a year.

Course changed to "B route" - twice up major hill! - due to some MBK event on the top of the course. Grim.

Intention to pace Helen to about 24 mins, uphill start tho she was very slow indeed, so slow that I physically couldnt' run any slower and she was also going backwards, so I just ran steadily up the hill, then at the turn, started passing people, which continued.

2nd time up hill I was not happy, breathing bad, legs crap, felt v unfit & quite ill. Still managed - just - to catch the 2nd pack of leading women and eventually drop them all - last km much too fast, but I have a tiny amount of pride in my pace. Essentially, I let no one pass me after the first 1km, and I ensured it stayed that way.

Both upper hamstrings sore after, plus L Achilles (last year's injury). Perhaps Chas was right - dont' risk it - but it was a good experience & start to the w/e.

Helen did indeed have a shit run & did about 25:30.

Garmin says 5.08km so I was, apparently, averaging under 7 mins per mile. Blimey. Fastest I've run in quite some time.

kms: 5:00 (start/up), 4:03 (down), 4:07 (mixture including flattish), 5:04 (up), 3:32 (down==> flat fast finish). 17 seconds for final 80m.

Course long, also more climb than last year / normal course? - YES - 104m climb according to Mapometer last year, 122m climb today. 18m difference - not much....? https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/8023397...

28th. Never saw Paul Jefferson & Peter Mountain!!! http://www.parkrun.org.uk/ashton-court/results/lat...

v slow easy trundle to bemmmie to get a few things from shops. jog back clutching stuff. very very low key..

Note: Smyths gig in evening at O2 Frogmore street (sister visit) - sung a lot, making sore throat & chest worse? Great nite tho! V good band. 2.5 pints. http://www.thesmyths.net/

Note
(injured)

TCA - bouldering - 75 mins, completely knackering!

Not sleeping well - throat / chest symptoms - harbouring a lurg, or maybe, reaction to the new anti Diabetes drugs I'm now on? Need to investigate.

Note: gig (Leftfield) at O2 academy frogmore st. Very loud! 3 pints - and deafened. Excellent nite :) http://www.leftfieldmusic.com/

Orienteering race 30:21 [4] 3.52 mi (8:37 / mi) +50m 8:15 / mi
(injured) shoes: Karrimor D30 Trail

BOK Urban Park , frenchay, Middle course again, getting a bit silly doing these Middle courses, but 30 mins is about right for me right now. Hmmmm.

Pretty perfect run. Surprised I didn't win every leg & was not even in the lead until no 4. I also have local knowledge-this area is no mystery to me.

Hamstring is clearly not going to "ping" 3 months after I did it, so maybe I just endure the pain and get on with it? Man up?
Pain easing. Fitness rubbish.

Warmed down with sore calf & hamstring, to get vandalised control dibbing unit. (Long course). Which I found.

Nice evening for it.

8 hours climbing & 9 routes in Wintours Leap, wye valley. Mostly sport climbing. Amazing, brilliant day out! With neighbour who'd never climbed outside before. He did incredibly well getting up (on second ) most of what I led.

Hardest routes were 6a+.

Very pleased with form. http://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/showlog.html?id=...

Running 36:00 [3] 4.5 mi (8:00 / mi) +80m 7:35 / mi
(injured) shoes: Saucony Guide 7

Steady Victoria park run, sunny. Easy pace.

Leg not nearly as hurty as usual, so did 2 laps not one, 1st time in over 3 months I've been able to do that.

Both Achilles were wooden & sore / solid at first - I think I'm allergic to summer, my heels get sore , hard ground? Whatever.

Glad to have "nearly" enjoyed a run!!!

Bouldering / soloing / scrambling at Goblin combe car park crag. Fun. Still alive, so didn't die soloing.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Another fabulous gig - this time at Marshfield ice creams, near Bath http://www.marshfield-icecream.co.uk/ - the owner's daughter's 21st in a posh marquee with FREE BAR (yes really!!!) & a hog roast (which we got too).). She's at Edinburgh university & it's safe to say she was a total babe. As were most of her mates, and their Mums too (yummy mummies)

What did Mark Knopfler say, in the 80s? "That ain't working.... money for nothing & your ch1cks for free" ..

Not that I had any joy in that dept, of course. Still - all v good fun & I'd do this for free. Rock n roll.

It's now my job, anyway. Bed 1:30am, up again at 2:00 to put ear plugs in due to cats snoring/purring. (Liz's).

Friday Jun 5, 2015 #

5 PM

Running 22:00 [2] 5.0 km (4:24 / km)
(injured) shoes: Brooks Ravenna 5

jogs in morning to & from liz's house to feed cats.

Leg a bit sore.

run + Paul Deaton early eve - 20 mins-ish - leg still too sore.

Now been fully injured 3 months & never would I have thought a hamstring tear could do this. I still reckon I'm months away from being able to run normally.

Focus on climbing, my summer ALpine trip, and obv, trying to rehab this leg - but only cos if I don't it may tear again when I'm "better". I do not enjoy being forced by pain to run at 8 - 10 min miles pace.

Wednesday Jun 3, 2015 #

Orienteering 34:00 [3] 4.4 km (7:44 / km)
(injured) shoes: Karrimor D30 Trail

BOK Park O ashton court.
Middle course.
Nice. preceded by 90 minutes bouldering at Avon gorge, which was great in the sunshine. Bookended by cycle rides - 25 mins, 15 mins, 10 mins, 8 mins. (riding)

DQ-ed by not going to no 13 as the feature was inside the Let's Rock Bristol fence. However, I was told later that the control was on the fence. Silly me.

Monday Jun 1, 2015 #

Running 22:00 [3] 4.2 km (5:14 / km)
(injured) shoes: Saucony Guide 7

Steady run. Leg a bit hurty. Whatever
