Running (Warm up/down) 25:00 [1] 4.0 km (6:15 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Musha 4

Warm up and down before the park run.

Running (Braunstone Parkrun) 17:45 [4] 5.02 km (3:32 / km) +34m 3:25 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Musha 4

Pretty poor park run, legs didn't really have it in them so kept to a steady pace and got round. Couldn't get my legs going despite trying, steady 2nd but no one to really push me today as the guy won by maybe 45 seconds and i didn't have it in me to keep up. Almost a minute off my PB so something wasn't right today.

Note
(rest day)

Park run just not risking anything as legs are pretty damn tight

Cross Training (From George's) 22:00 [1] 8.32 km (2:39 / km)

Cycling home from George's bit of a longer route.
7 PM

Cross Training (Spin Class) 47:21 [5] 18.7 km (2:32 / km)

Really hard spin class. I said last night i didn't feel 100% and this just pushed me over the edge. It was just hard to keep my legs turning and i felt ill and faint, so a definite rest day tomorrow.

Running (Ullesthorpe loop) 43:58 [3] 8.96 km (4:54 / km) +67m 4:44 / km
shoes: Inov-8 x-talon 190

Lovely little evening cruise the ullesthorpe loop felt very niggly, tired and tight but that all went after about 2k. Still didn't feel 100% at any point.
7 PM

Cross Training (To Georges) 22:32 [1] 7.25 km (3:06 / km)

No effort trundle up to Georges, will be the same back again tomorrow

Cross Training (Narborough Match) 1:30:00 [4]
shoes: Nike CTR360

First game for new team, really went for it and loved it. Not an easy game but we played really well, won 5-0 and scored 2, lovely left foot, running from half way line, beat a few and slotted it in. Similar for second but took it early, 25 yard chip over the keeper.
Going to make some notes over the next few days looking at winter training, think i'm joining Huncote Harriers so get some proper structured running training in. Need to speak with Emily too about plans and events i need to get to, looking forward to next year as it's a bit of a learning year.

Running (Warm up/down) 1:10:00 [2] 8.0 km (8:45 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Musha 4

Warm up and down throughout the day, with stretching and drills included

Orienteering (RAL Sprint 1A) 16:56 [4] **** 3.92 km (4:19 / km) +50m 4:04 / km
spiked:15/18c shoes: Mizuno Wave Musha 4

Headed down to Oxford with dad to run the RAL double sprint day. Ran mens open, decent field with johnny peter will and adam there. Started well, spiking and flowing through 1-4 the slight slip on 5, not finding the entrance to the construction yard all too well, but managed ok. Up and over to 6 (most of the climb, then didn't quite go far enough in to 7 but found it ok after, good route going left to 8 then round the large Diamond Light Source which was really cool, all the way through 9-14/15 then a couple more controls round the cafe before heading to 18 and finish. Navigated pretty well in fairness, a few slips, total time loss on mistakes, maybe 30-40seconds, on hesitations and odd route choices. Then maybe a little more time on pace as i felt a tad heavy.
2 PM

Orienteering (RAL Sprint 2A) 19:50 [4] **** 4.72 km (4:12 / km) +30m 4:04 / km
spiked:15/19c shoes: Mizuno Wave Musha 4

Unfortunately mis punched so analysis will be a bit more brief. Basically was a lot more scrappy today, cock up on 3 meant adam caught a bit more time on me, adding to the pressure. From then on, was fairly clean but still scrappy and hesitant when i should have just realised there was no prssure on me and enjoyed it. On 12, there were 2 controls really close (within 20-30m so nothign on the map really) and i got the wrong one, a classic example of just not checking codes unfortunately but in a sprint i was rushing a bit so navigation was just glance and quick checks of the map so should have taken the time to be more accurate. From the on though settled in a bit more and enjoyed it, took some more time out of adam which was a nice bonus, this was mainly on route choice. Would have been 8th on mens open so was pretty pleased with this considering the age gap between me and many of the top athletes there.

Running (Dunton Short) 33:40 [2] 7.28 km (4:37 / km) +59m 4:27 / km
shoes: Adidas Response Cushion 19

Wanted to get a run out before going out with friends this evening for post exam celebrations. Really happy with the way things are going at the minutes, I'm running pretty well and feeling comfortable and this seems to be a recurring trend on most of the runs I've had.Looking forward to cross country season starting soon and want to get stuck in to the road running circuit too. Lovely day for it and some real contemplation about this next year to come.

Running (Long run) 1:09:50 [3] 15.17 km (4:36 / km) +153m 4:23 / km
shoes: Adidas Response Cushion 19

Having a think about winter training so went out to check out a new long loop that I'd found on google maps. Headed out to ullesthorpe the normal way, maybe 6k or so, then off a new footpath i found back towards ashby parva, out from there (i got lost so went very cross country) out on to a road then along another new footpath for about 5k (lovely route) up to dunton then back along the road (but i could add on a k or 2 going along some more footpaths but it was getting dark, will check it out soon though. Set out at a steady trot and maintained it comfortably throughout. Thoroughly enjoyed myself.

Running (Pyramids) 41:08 [4] 7.06 km (5:50 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 x-talon 190

Tough set of pyramid intervals at jubilee park. Did 1 on 1 off all the way up to 4 then back down again so ended up doing 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,4,4,3,3,2,2,1,1. Legs were pretty heavy after yesterday but enjoyed it all the same.

Running (Warm up/down) 15:42 [1] 2.34 km (6:43 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 x-talon 190

Jogging to and from the park, and then some before intervals.

Running (Hill Reps) 7:32 [4] 0.32 km (23:33 / km) +179m 6:12 / km
shoes: Inov-8 x-talon 190

Really good short sharp hill reps up and down the embankments on Jubilee Walk. Really steep banks so hard work.

Running (Warm up) 11:13 [1] 2.13 km (5:16 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response Cushion 19

Warm up before time trial. Basically just a jog up to frolesworth where i'd planned to start.

Running (3k Road Time Trial) 9:48 [5] 3.0 km (3:16 / km) +14m 3:12 / km
shoes: Adidas Response Cushion 19

Progress Checker.
Basically hadn't done one in a while and wondered how I'd improved over the last couple of months at this distance. Started quite well, ran the first 1500 quite comfortably, but the whole way was where all the climb was, as little as it was, i was feeling it enough to affect me. This was especially obvious on the last k, felt like i was really having to push. So think i may need to work a bit on my hill speed/strenght. Definitely improved more in 5-10k recently than over this short distance, so more speed for to follow until maybe the beginning of october, then it's back in to the enduance/base phase (which i missed last year).

Running (Warm down) 6:01 [1] 1.19 km (5:03 / km)
shoes: Adidas Response Cushion 19

Rest of the way home.

Strength and conditioning 10:00 [2]

I've noticed that as i've increased my training volume, this has become increasingly important to me, so going to log it when i can.

Cross Training (Long) 1:45:23 [3] 45.3 km (2:20 / km) +350m 2:14 / km

Long cycle this evening to give my legs a break from impact. Lovely ride out, great evening for it and really enjoyed the length.

9 AM

Cross Training (To/From Lutterworth) 40:00 [2] 15.68 km (2:33 / km)

Cycled in to get my Economics result as i did the AS course a year early. Was really pleased to have got a B (in both exams) considering i did it earlier was dead chuffed. Leisurely cycle in and back again, with a pretty big gap in the middle as was out with friends for an hour or 2.
7 PM

Cross Training (Narborough Training) 1:00:00 [3]
shoes: Nike CTR360

So, I went against my word and signed for narborough town. Enjoyed the training and am now their new number 10 (out and out striker). Not sure how long I'll go for, might drop it in a few months to really focus on my O training, but it's a good break and something to focus on before re focusing my goals for next year.

Running (Warm up/down) 30:00 [1] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)
shoes: Inov-8 x-talon 190

Rough estimate off my garmin, drills and stretching/jogging throughout the evening.

Orienteering (OD Draycote Water [Long]) 28:02 [3] ** 5.39 km (5:12 / km) +63m 4:55 / km
spiked:21/25c shoes: Inov-8 x-talon 190

OD Draycote Water event.
Not a technical area to be honest, probably wouldn't have gone if Dad wasn't planning. Won't go in to too much detail, course was 5km, went a bit longer, running round and not quite on the line, good speed training whilst navigating as it was the sort of area you can really go for it on. In doing this, lost time on a few controls, most notably 9 where i judged my pacing wrong. Overall a pretty good run, with a few mistakes but was pleased with how i was running. Legs felt a tad grumbly towards the end.

Orienteering (OD Draycote Water [Short]) 18:42 [1] * 1.51 km (12:23 / km) +32m 11:12 / km
spiked:12/12c shoes: Inov-8 x-talon 190

Shadowed cousins round the short course, hills felt tough even at a lower pace, but was pretty fun teaching them to orienteer.

Orienteering (Control Collecting) 27:12 [1] * 4.23 km (6:26 / km) +49m 6:05 / km
spiked:11/11c shoes: Inov-8 x-talon 190

Collected the longer controls for dad. Was further than i thought and i was pretty knackered and for some reason i was also boiling.

Running (Dunton Loop) 31:45 [3] 7.24 km (4:23 / km) +59m 4:13 / km
shoes: Inov-8 x-talon 190

Similar run to last week, simlar pace too. Didn't feel comfortable or well today, bit of a head cold, but that wasn't going to stop me. Pushed a bit harder on the climbs and was happy that it wasn't too much effort. Enjoyed it in the end, but calves were grumbling a tad, out on the bike at some point tomorrow.

Running (Fosse meadows) 1:06:10 [3] 14.57 km (4:32 / km) +115m 4:22 / km
shoes: Inov-8 x-talon 190

Nice long trundle round to fosse meadows (the extended way there). Quick loop around it, was going to do 2 but it got too dark so ran alongside the lake back up to frolesworth then through the fields, along the top of jubilee, down back lane and back up main street. Lovely evening and no real niggles today which was a pleasant surprise. Also got a cheeky smile of a girl riding a horse by the lake, which was also a pleasant surprise.

Running (Warm up) 8:34 [1] 1.12 km (7:39 / km)

Not as long a warm up as I wanted, but jog and drills.

Running (Braunstone Parkrun) 16:53 [5] 5.0 km (3:23 / km) +30m 3:17 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Musha 4

Decided id run this one differently. As oppose to the other ones I've done, I went off at the pace I wanted to stick at for the whole race. This meant sitting back a few places but was immensely satisfying catching up ans taking people with supposed relative ease that had paced it wrong. Hung at the back of the first pack for the first lap, pretty easy. Pushed the hill and Sat in 3rd for most of the 2nd lap before being caught at the end unfortunately. Ended up 4th but was shocked to have taken 30secs~ off my pb, pretty happy with how I ran it and how it went.

Running (Warm down) 8:00 [1] 1.0 km (8:00 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Musha 4

Really easy warm down with dad.

Cross Training (Cox's VS Lawson's) 2:55:03 [3]

Really good game of tennis with matt and hannah. Actually surprisingly tougher than i thought it would be, it turned very competitive. Went 2 sets down, but managed to drag it back in the match tie break ;)
7 PM

Cross Training (To/From Lutterworth) 35:00 [3] 15.2 km (2:18 / km)

Headed in to town for potential new team trial. Bizarre thing happened on the way back, ended up racing two other bikers. Led oour 3 man peleton for about 5k, then they ripped me apart going off leaving me in the dust, was shocked but great fun.

Cross Training (Town Training) 1:30:00 [3]
shoes: Nike CTR360

Went to try out the mens team for town as i'd been recommended by my manager. Played pretty well in fairness, got basically offered a place, said i'll let him know. Unfortunately, i just don't see how it will work this year. I've always loved football, playing and watching but i just think if i'm serious about o-ing, i can't commit to football, it just takes too much time up. Such a huge shame and will miss it so much. If i can find a junior team that are fairly flexible about me missing some matches, i'll see if that will work, but at present it seems this may be the season i hang up my boots.

Running (Dunton Short) 31:31 [3] 7.24 km (4:21 / km) +59m 4:11 / km

Running (Villages short) 24:29 [3] 5.91 km (4:09 / km) +54m 3:58 / km
ahr:161 max:177 shoes: Mizuno Wave Musha 4

Went out for a steady trot to try out new shoes. Headed out down the road to Frolesworth, hard right up and down to Ashby Parva, then cruise back down the road in to Leire. With not going too far, i thought I'd head out at a fairly brisk pace, which i managed for about 4k or so. Then started having breathing troubles (very much like asthma) so had to slow it down, so pace was actually higher than it said. This being said, legs felt good despite the rest of my body not being really in sync, but i guess that's an after effect of the Scottish. Shoes felt good, less drop than on my Karrimor Swifts, but felt like they had more cushioning, or so it felt, even though they actually have less. Prominent mid-sole, and i seemed to be heel striking far less in them, and this was noticeable as i could feel the mid-sole as my foot hit the ground. Very responsive too, so overall, a pretty good investment as far as i can see.

Note

Scottish Analysis:
All in all, being genuinely honest, i was quite disappointed with the 6 days this year. Although i finished 4th overall (1stEnglish), i didn't feel like i had a good run at all. There was always just one or two mistakes a course that ruined it for me, being it not concentrating or being slightly out on a bearing or mis reading contours, i just didn't feel clean this week. Obviously there is also the aforementioned external factors as well, but purely from a racing point of view, i was well off the pace. Just looking at splits, i was no where near running fast enough and just didn't have the endurance I have ha in the past. However this can come down to fact That this season i was injured for a good 8-9 months so missed the major part of the base phase but even so, i feel i've matured more as an orienteer enough to cut out the stupid mistakes i have been making this year.
Making it even more disappointing, was the fact that I didn't have good enough results for selection for EYOC by the looks of things, so that means my biggest goal this year is more or less out of the window. I don'tman to sound bitter,I'm simply speaking my mind, and the selections aren't out yet, but from the results I'm pretty certain i won't get in, having said this, congratulation to all those who are selected as from some of the runs you've had you definitely deserve it. Also worth a mention here, unfortunately I wasn't selected for JHI's this year which is a big shame. I guess what I'm saying is basically, provided i can stay relatively injury free for this next year, i hope i can improve on my training, making it more structured and specific and hopefully get the results next year.

6 Days, Day 6
Coulmony and Belivat

Start Time: 12:00

Last race of the week and was really quite up for it, last proper race of the year really. Started well, caught Michael H up on the way 1 (1min). Then slip on 2, too far right, easy through to 3, being careful on the open. Followed the contour round to 4, but not quite far enough so hesitation here. Got leg caught on barbed wire going in to 5, that smarted a bit. Poor route on 6, going over rather than round, losing about a minute. Easy round to 7, then timed out road crossing so a bit of a breather. Had 5 minutes but only took 1:34. Planned route to 9, executed well but running poorly by this point, good through to 10. Lost ~1min on 11, missing the huge open section somehow, but corrected myself and fell through the bracken to the control. Pre planned 12 so ran it well, followinf the ridge along to the hill. Then slip on 14, going too far left and relocating off of the depression. Across to the grotty area for 14 found it fine. Found 15 quite well, navigating to the boulder then on to the penis-shaped green and up the veg boundary in to 15. Messed up 16, open area was very vague and didn't go far enough, Found 17 well but i think the area was mapped a tad dodgily, btu no matter, then fine bearing to 18 and got it spot on, albeit a bit slow. Horrible climb to 19 but ran the vast majority of it, with very few stops. Round the marsh for 20 then across the track and round the 'pond' for 21, then down the hill to 22 and finish.

Finished 5th, could have taken off a tonne of time without mistakes but that's just the way it goes, plus i reckon all the later starters must have had somenkiller tracks to follow, can't help that really though. Finished 5th today.

Running (Warm up) 53:12 [1] 5.28 km (10:05 / km)

As hefty as this looks for a warm up, it was an almost 4km walk to the start so normal warm up, plus the walk up.

Orienteering (S6D Day 5) 46:30 [5] *** 7.46 km (6:14 / km) +290m 5:13 / km
spiked:25/27c shoes: Inov-8 x-talon 190

Scottish 6 day, Day 5, Roseisle

Start time: 11:15

Really nothing to lose now. Had a really terrible night last night, 2 hours sleep or so, feeling really about external events (i won't post details on here). But mindset pre race was really poor, the worst this week.

Having said this, i had a reasonable race. Spiked 1, easy peasy, took the path route to 2, which i think was quicker and easier as you could see it from the path. Tough little rise up to 3, but spiked it fine. Along the beach to 4, good route i think, then cutting in early and following the ridge along. Same again, following the tree line to 5. Raced Gustav to 6, unfortunately he beat me, i reckon he got lucky, but found it well, despite taking a different(ish) route to him, aiming for the tree ling and along whereas he went straight. Straight to 7, reading the contours well, and the same on 8. Very hesitant on 9, didn't think I'd gone far enough but stumbled on the control, maybe a tad lucky. Began to tire a bit on the way to 10, especially on the climbs, but navigation was good. More or less straight to 11, then cruise round the hill in to 12. Path to 13 then along the tree ling in to 14 and then on to the other side of the map. 15 was quite an easy control, basically just went straight to 16 and 17. Couldn't find the crossing point at first on 18, but did in the end and found it a bit rubbishly but still ok. 19, out in the open, was stood on top of it but couldn't see it, bit annoying to lose time there. Too far left on 20 but didn't waste too much time with it. Went straight through 21-23, losing a bit of time on 23 but seem to be the only one who found 23 without too much trouble, relying on the contours rather than the vegetation, but still messing up a bit. 24-25 were so simple you just couldn't mess up. 26 was my only proper mistakes, losing a good 3 minutes or more here, going too far let then right, including looking an idiot in front of the camera control but found it eventually then in to 27 and finish.

Bar 26, my cleanest race of the week, but i was exhausted so couldn't keep my pace going. More pleased with it today, despite terrible preparation. Lost 3-4 minutes mistakes, mainly on 26 and then a few other hesitations. Finished 4th.

Loch Of Boath, Last selection race.

Start time: 12:59

With this being the last selection race, i really felt like i had something to prove, sadly i didn't manage to. There was obviously less pressure on me as i hadn't done as well as some of the other guys in the last 2 selection races.
Started scrappily, clean enough through 1-3 (the early section), but didn't feel comfortable and wasn't concentrating enough so made a few small slips, but they all add up. Fastest split to 4, thought had my head in gear. Lost a tonne of time on 5, wrong side of the sparse open, when i thought i was right, lost maybe a minute or more here. Straight to 6, slightly off, then easy to 7, and across the open to 8, managed it fine. But still at this stage was making stupid errors that were easily avoidable. 9 i found cleanly but was slow, at this point in the week, i began realising just how much missing the large endurance block had affected me as my pace was way off what i was expecting. Was relatively clean through 10-12 but slow again and then 13 i found ok. Some questionable route choice as well. Poor route to 14, should have taken the path so lost yet more time. 15, out to the path, then straight to the forest track trying to push but not able to on the way to 16, then across the field to 17 and finish.

Really quite a bad race, and so disappointed as it was the last selection. Won't be selected now, i just didn't perform when i needed to and it cost me. Lost a good 3 minutes, maybe as much as 5 on mistakes and then yet more on pace, so overall just not good. 8th today.
