Midlands Champs (middle selection race).

Attempted to get in the same mindset as yesterday, focusing on the navigation and always planning one control ahead to try and get a good flow going. Set out fine, clean through the first 8 or so, planning well enough and just a couple of compass wobbles (also lost time on 2, unsure whether to cross the cultivated field), and a few minor circles slips. On splits I was sat in 3rd and so should have been settled and continued with how I was running. Left 8 without a properly formed plan for 9, hit the path and made a small error at the junction before heading too far left on my bearing (also not properly settled). Was fine off the path junction (AP) but then got distracted by a train of 3 girls racing left so thought I was one stream too far over, went with them before checking myself and relocating to the control. Let this affect me a little too much but did settle well on 10 and got it clean. Probably didn't back myself going straight on 11 losing a little time going out to the track, 12 fine. 13 was another costly mistake, again not backing myself and bailing to the path, which was a route btu hadn't planned it well at all so, no AP, crashed in early and messed about on the knolls before hitting it. Splits reckon I was still 4th so again should have checked myself and chilled collecting myself on the next couple of running legs, compass good on both. Relied on the veg on 16, last big mistake, ran straight past the control before realising. Had expected open but didn't see it despite compass being good so need to be less reliant on features on that sort of control. Next section flowed well then a little off on my bearing for 21, heading right (again should have been straight). Good compass through to the finish, no incident other than dropping my map on the last control losing a bit more time).

Overall this wasn't a terrible performance, most controls were executed well but my planning was either half formed or rushed and I should have forced myself to reset after the first mistake on 9. Always felt rushed and in future on middles I need to take my time leaving a control and make sure I have a plan before doing so. Definitely a couple of easily correctable points for the next couple of weeks and easily practicable. Looking forward to the JK to correct this.
