Running warm up/down 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: VJ Supra

Warm up before EUOC event on Holyrood Park.

Orienteering race 1:09:51 [5] 5.8 mi (12:03 / mi)
shoes: VJ Supra

Annual race round Holyrood Park courtesy of EUOC. Well planned course with lots of route choice and legs of varying length. The snow started just after I started at 12.56. At first it was quite pleasant running in it but it got heavier as I went round and by the time I got to No 10 it was a white-out with driving snow obscuring everything and eventually covering the ground (and tussocks and rocks) with 6 - 8" of snow.

Took my time on the controls in the gorse patches to make sure I got it right and only came to grief once.

I went round the road on the long leg between 3 and 4. Not sure if I gained or lost anything.

Lost 4 minutes on No 7 when I left No 6 slightly wrong and got on the wrong side of one of the gorse patches. Had to double back almost to No 6, sort myself out then go the right way.

Lost 1 minute on No 12 when I struggled to find a way down the rocky slope to the control through the lying snow.

Had real problems finding the small path down the side of the hill from 17 to 18 in the deep snow as the hillside was completely covered and there wasn't any sign of the path, but once I found it lower down I was able to speed up.

A much needed terrain run in challenging conditions.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Connect 3

Warm up before the non-comp Edinburgh City Race.

Orienteering race 1:21:00 [3] 6.9 mi (11:44 / mi)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Connect 3

Not the Edinburgh Urban Race. Had we known the courses were non-competitive before we set off we wouldn't have wasted our time coming through for this and would have gone to Tollcross Parkrun instead.
Decided to trot round and use it as a training run but it turned out to be a fairly unpleasant experience.
I think the organisers made the correct call but I shouldn't have attempted it as my shoes seemed to have no grip at all on even the slightest piece of ice and I ended up jogging and walking most of the way round after I had a really bad fall on some ice going in to No 10. My back, left shoulder and left wrist are all really sore. My confidence had gone after this and I took it very easy and walked as soon as there was any hint of ice. The section from 11 to 15 was particularly bad. I met Mrs P near the end and jogged in through the last few controls with her.
As usual there were issues with other competitors going through gates which are shown as not to be used and me, Mrs P and 2 other runners arrived at the gate to the north-west of No 33 and found it chained and padlocked but it's shown on the map as open!
Not sure why No14 was used as it meant a run up and down the twisty path for no reason and then some competitors were punching throught the uncrossable fence. My SI Air registered me punching it when I ran past it on the opposite side of the fence! The site shouldn't have been used.
The traffic was a major problem. I lost a lot of time trying to cross the main road between 7 and 8 and again between 8 and 9. The worst was trying to cross the major road between 28 and 29. I got stopped by the traffic just as I arrived at the road. I timed how long I was stuck there and it was 2mins 15secs.
However I didn't feel very well today and don't think I could have seriously raced. My pulse was very high most of the way round in spite of the minimal effort I was putting in. Younger daughter has been in bed with the flu for 5 days so I hope I'm not going down with it!

Note

Absolutely horrified to see results and splits being published from todays 'race'. I thought it was an informal, just for fun, trot round with no timing - only to find results and splits being produced and me miles off the pace. Had I known this I would have put a bit more effort in and not stopped for a chat with Mrs P half way round, stopped for a chat with a local explaining what we were doing, and taking time to act the tourist at a couple of land marks, including Greyfriars Bobby which I'd never seen before.
So embarrassed!

Note

Saw the asthma consultant again today. Another slight deterioration in my lung function over the past few months but they are keeping me on the same inhaler. Back for another check up in 6 months.
6 PM

Running warm up/down 15:00 [3] 1.7 mi (8:49 / mi)
shoes: VJ Supra

Linwood track closed due to the ice so headed over to Ardgryffe Playing Fields. Got 1/4 mile from the house in my trail running shoes and decided it was way too icy for them, so turned back to the house and changed in to my VJ's.
It will be interesting to see if the Edinburgh urban race on Saturday will take place as there's no way it would happen here as many of the roads and paths round here are sheets of ice and frozen snow.

Running intervals 25:00 [5] 3.0 mi (8:20 / mi)
shoes: VJ Supra

2/3 of the planned track session on the frozen wastes of the Ardgryffe Playing Fields. 10 x 90secs (45secs jog recovery).

Running warm up/down 9:00 [3] 1.1 mi (8:11 / mi)
shoes: VJ Supra

Run home.

Off work this morning so went for a run over to Houston House Woods in the snow. Still a bit jaded but going okay. Decided to do a hill session in the middle of the run by running each of the 7 hills on the route 3 times each.

Intervals with the athletic club on the trails on Linwood Moss. Session was 1min (30secs) + (3 x (3mins (90secs) + 6mins (2mins)) + 1min. Legs tired after yesterday so couldn't run as fast as I wanted! Right hamstring tight and left foot sore at the end of the session.

Shortish cool down.
