More field checking for next Sunday's mountain-O. A beautiful afternoon on a gentle mountain slope with Arctic ground squirrels calling and skittering around. A route choice bottleneck on the course is a low pass. I stood at the top of that pass this afternoon and it was so steep I got dizzy. I decided it was a bad idea to intentionally route all racers down a steep and eroding slope. I came home and cancelled the meet -- not enough time in the next week to completely re-do and re-check the course and upgrade veg mapping to use gentler terrain. Bummer, but at least I'll sleep for the next week instead of worrying about grave injuries. Biked back down the hill from where Dan had dropped me; too rocky to be fun.

Fiddled in GIS all day figuring out how to get OCAD veg layer to something I could edit, etc; feeling very accomplished. Finally out the door at 6 pm to check control locations. Biked to Wolverine turnoff, hiked up to the cairn (felt awful from 2.5 wks of the crud), then sidehilled to the spur between Wolverine and Near Pt, and on to the saddle above North Fork Campbell Ck valley. Got to explore a moraine-y area I've been eyeing from atop Near Point for a few years. Would be fun for an O club picnic and sprint. Spotted a black bear abt 70 m from Dan on Near Point, but bear was headed away. Dan was a super trooper. I talked him into coming along, suggesting 2.5 hrs return; actually 4 hours.
