strength (shoulders, guts, et al.) 1:10:00 [2]

Yay for me!
Full set of shoulders with 2# wts.
Lucy's easies, minus some twists.
Then, most of Marie-Cat's strength training for Oers.
Listened to Rick Steeves interviewing an Indian woman, then a Brain Science podcast that seems highly relevant on brain fitness. NIH study finds that physical exercise and cognitive training help delay onset of Alzheimers and cognitive decline (I wonder if they can induce cognitive incline for us that have already declined?) and diabetes and stress do the opposite. I may buy the book by the guy she was interviewing. "Guide to Brain Fitness"? Alvaro Fernandez?

Walk with Dan. Not the most scenic route, exc the view up powerline pass. Start/end at Upper O'Malley trailhead. Up gasline to top of the hill intersection with Glenn Alps trail, then back down the powerline and over hemlock knob. Wildflowers tho' and cottongrass and nice sedges. Light rain but well dressed for it. Sore/tight left glute from trotting.

Felt half decent. Trotted all but the three gasline hills.
I was thinking about the fairly high risk of the Anchorage Hillside burning up (and our home with it) and wondering whether there's such a thing as a fire-resistant drop cloth to drape over our cedar-shake shed and our wooden deck before we evacuate some day... Dan suggested wet wool army blankets.

orienteering race (mile 1.1 Red!) 2:00:45 intensity: (12 @0) + (12:31 @2) + (1:14:38 @3) + (33:24 @4) *** 4.93 mi (24:29 / mi) +353ft 22:56 / mi

Ooo. Training log entry just interrupted by a pair of grizzly teenagers interested in Dan's boat, which no doubt still smells of salmon despite a decent cleaning after fishing on Monday. One did NOT want to leave when I hollered at him. He climbed in and tried to figure out how to start the motor.
Back to the race... Nominal 5.5 km. Decided to do red since it was relatively short and Dan had forgotten his shoes and had to go home for them, so I'd have more time. Despite my 30 min head start, he still passed me at control 4. Three substantial blunders (5-10 min each), two of which were dumb. Otherwise, was quite pleased with my navigation. Beat the other woman by 3 min, and maybe a couple men. Forest was relatively good 'running'. Full face plant into a mudhole just before last control. Next time: tape my shoelaces (at least 5 re-ties today), check trail orientation when I hit a trail. My standard for 'spiking' is relatively low.
