orienteering (POM Middle Day 2) 1:24:15 intensity: (24:01 @1) + (36:31 @2) + (23:32 @3) + (11 @4) ***** 2.76 mi (30:31 / mi) +200ft 28:34 / mi
ahr:90 max:149 spiked:6/15c shoes: INOV8 OROC 340

Nominal 2.7 km. I haven't edited the track yet. Finished 37/47 finishers in W50, plus 6 more that mp or dnf. Fastest time in W50 was 40:56.
I started a minute late; need to stop showing up late for the start...
Cool and rainy. Watched Eileen take a full bath in a mud puddle and glad it was not me. Major rocky area, so hard nav for me. I'm having trouble figuring out which rocks are on the map and what' mapped as ROM vs bedrock or rocks.
Good: Found all controls. Wore right clothes (O shirt with light wool turtleneck over for temp control; started with it off and put it on part way through after standing on a hilltop in the wind looking for a control. Readily found 6 controls and took good routes there. Not so good: Was late for start. Distracted by others. Next time: ignore other people. In rocky areas, look wider for safe routes. ID solid attack points within 100 m that don't require diagonal travel across contours.

orienteering race (POM Middle Day 1) 1:25:00 intensity: (14:04 @1) + (42:01 @2) + (23:58 @3) + (4:57 @4) **** 3.41 mi (24:56 / mi) +422ft 22:19 / mi
ahr:114 max:143 19c shoes: INOV8 OROC 340

Nominal 4.3 km. Finished 27/49 finishers plus 7 mp. W50 winner did 45:26. Can't remember much of race now except lots of not-very-good navigation.

orienteering race (POM Night Sprint) 37:54 intensity: (9:16 @1) + (20:07 @2) + (8:31 @3) ** 1.86 mi (20:23 / mi) +220ft 18:19 / mi
ahr:110 max:133 18c shoes: Sportiva blue trailers

Finished 25/31. Winning time was 22:32. Nominal 1.6 km. In the 40s and raining and windy. I was pretty blind, between the rain on glasses, dark, and glare of street and car lights. Unpleasant conditions that made me question whether the 'fun' was worth the effort. I even let utter a nasty word after I groped awhile in pitch black to find my way through some hedges that seemed to suck the light out of my meager headlamp, then was quickly blinded by a woman with a strong headlamp that then proceeded to run straight into me... But my utterance was delayed by the cold, so I think world peace was maintained and Americans' reputation was not besmirched. (And I heard the Pope dropped the same word the same weekend.) Took me a while to find a change of clothes for the wait for Dan to finish. I was late to the start by a couple minutes and they were kind enough to start me late. They started me at my own 30-second interval and miraculously had the right time for me at the finish. This meet was remarkably well organized.

orienteering (POM Model Event 2) 45:00 [1] * 2.0 mi (22:30 / mi)
12c

Walked around the model event in mountain town of Folgosinho. Discovered that I'm a better city navigator than Dan is. Lovely little town seems mostly unoccupied for winter. Beautiful cloudy misty views across valley - agricultural lands, clearcut and burned forest, scattered old and new towns.

orienteering (POM Model Event) 1:44:23 intensity: (37:28 @0) + (40:37 @1) + (24:09 @2) + (2:00 @3) + (9 @4) *** 3.11 mi (33:34 / mi) +238ft 31:18 / mi
ahr:92 max:142 21c shoes: INOV8 OROC 340

Wandered around on the Model Event map. Made Dan wait so I could take my time and go to all the controls. Enjoyed some moments of running through pasture land, and enjoyed coming across a shepherd and sheep. Imagined what he must think of all these people that have time and money on their hands to come run around in lycra in the mountains.

orienteering (Dunas da Mira) 45:07 [3] 1.68 mi (26:51 / mi) +41ft 26:15 / mi
slept:9.0 shoes: Sportiva blue trailers

Took a while to find the map location. Then ran around until dark. Forgot my compass so Dan and I went together and alternated navigation.

Gafanhas map. Wonderful running. Late in day. Corridor and window and terrain simplification exercises. Dan and I went together, with only one map. Alternated navigation.

Dunas da Tocha training course. I tried to stop at each control, plan my route, then run hard to the control. Did this successfully for about the first half, but then seemed to have more trouble agreeing with my compass on what my direction of travel should be.
