orienteering race (Long at MCO) 1:09:26 intensity: (2:15 @1) + (19:05 @2) + (44:06 @3) + (4:00 @4) **** 3.48 mi (19:57 / mi) +359ft 18:11 / mi
ahr:122 max:140 spiked:9/15c shoes: INOV8 OROC 340

Nominal 4.0 km. Finished 13/19. Winning time: 41:53. Fell on bedrock en route to #1, which led to more caution for whole race. Also cautious on navigation, not wanting to have to relocate. Got lost on two controls, losing perhaps 7 min and 3 min relative to my normal performance. I just didn't move very fast. In this week's training, I'll work on being less cautious navigating and faster running. Enjoyed running to 4-5 controls with a Portuguese woman. I navigated slightly better; ultimately, after we both got lost, she stayed lost longer.
Finished 9/21 for combined 2 days.

orienteering race (MCO Middle) 1:02:10 intensity: (22 @0) + (4:33 @1) + (24:31 @2) + (27:20 @3) + (5:24 @4) **** 2.46 mi (25:16 / mi) +420ft 21:45 / mi
ahr:119 max:141 14c shoes: INOV8 OROC 340

Nominal 3.0 km. Finished 8/21. Winning time: 37:42. Pleased with results. No huge mistakes; just lots of very cautious navigation. Overdressed, so hot and fogged in. Terrain not as rocky and challenging as the model event. Legs felt tired. But navigation was my limiting factor.

orienteering race (Night Sprint in Aguiar) 20:13 intensity: (10 @0) + (31 @1) + (35 @2) + (16:37 @3) + (2:20 @4) ** 1.5 mi (13:29 / mi) +135ft 12:25 / mi
ahr:127 max:145 spiked:13/16c shoes: Sportiva blue trailers

Finished 5/11 of W50, and 5/16 for W45 and W50 that did same course. Winning time was 14:38. I love these night sprints in intricate old cities -- headlights running all different directions. No big mistakes. Focus on next time: Stop and look at map and clues and memorize directions, then RUN to the next control; trying to read on the run in the dark is too slow.

orienteering (model event for MCO) 1:32:02 intensity: (41:20 @0) + (37:22 @1) + (12:28 @2) + (52 @3) 2.43 mi (37:52 / mi) +370ft 33:06 / mi

Trying to make sense of map of very rocky terrain. Took me a while to get any feel for which boulders and cliffs were mapped, which mapped as boulders as opposed to dot knolls, which areas mapped as grey exposed rock vs white or yellow, which giant rocky areas mapped as rock vs just hills. Cold and moist. What vegetation was passable and what was blackberries. Didn't bode well for navigation or fun during the Mediterranean Championships in Orienteering. Others were equally sobered.

Trotted another training map. I was tired. No coffee yet, not enough food, short on water in my system. Trotted somewhat energetically until about 8, then less so to about 13, then walked in when I realized I was not having fun anymore. My legs need a rest. Beautiful day. Enjoyed a short exchange with a state gov't guy wondering what I was doing. I was not articulate; I'm sure some words came out in German. After lunching and sunning on the lanai, visited some estuarine wetlands at the mouth of the Rio Odiel. Saw a few birds new to us, but don't yet know what they were. During my O-trot, thought I was seeing some unusual deer, then saw others and figured out they were horses. Lucky I'm a plant ecologist, not an animal person...

Training map, mass start sort-of-farsta-style, with a bunch of European speedy kids. Finished WAY last. Half slow trot, half walk. Tired legs. Not very good at pushing myself when not competing. Took my time and tried to read the terrain well. Front line of dunes and 2nd generation stable forested dunes. A couple major screw-ups but about half solid but slow navigation. Gorgeous clear day, nice beach.

Training map near Punta Umbria. Lollipop pines over scattered scrubby artemisia and opuntia cactus and piles of refuse. My calf threatened to cramp after three controls so I walked virtually all. The flags were almost on the ground so it was good practice at finding just the right feature. I enjoyed closely comparing map with terrain and veg. Botched about 3 controls, including one reentrant that I was looking for on the wrong side of a ridge. I flushed a huge owl flew out of a tree.
I'm spending a shameful amount of time watching the Olympics, for the first time in over 30 years. It's fun to see how they've changed, and see new sports I've never watched before, and see Spanish coverage which sticks with one sport for over an hour at time..
