I started rather late, so didn't give myself enough time to botch any controls. I started by forgetting about #1 until I had run a ways past it. Then all went fine enough until 4-5, which I totally botched. I couldn't really identify a great attack point, but picked a route and started. I was aiming for a pond, but kept drifting downhill, and failed to realize that the pond was under forest. I was looking for a bright opening. So, I went past it. I figured that out pretty soon, then spent a little time trying to relocate. I figured out where I was pretty soon, but then veered off course to check that I really was where I thought I was. (I was.) Navig'd toward the control, picked a nice attack point, and headed for the control. But I crossed some low cliffs that weren't mapped, and probably walked right past the control before i decided i was lost again. Wandered a while trying to relocated, did so, then found it. 30-35-minute mistake. Most of the rest went fine, but my mind was wandering by 10. I knew I was running out of time, but decided to complete the course. But then lost focus and botched another. So I quit and returned to the start 9 min after closing time. I would have liked the chance to go out and try the two botched legs again. I think next year we'll start early Sat morning, with the aim to leave the afternoon open for more terrain or botched leg study. Great weekend!

Only one substantial error (5 minutes) and a couple minor errors. Otherwise, just slow and deliberate tromping through the woods. Not much trotting. I didn't feel very skillful. Mostly set a compass course to a pond and rough-compassed my way there, bounced off it to the next pond, etc. until locating an attack point (on perhaps 1/2 the controls) and in. It may be the first time I've done a red course. I was satisfied. My stamina was not the limiting factor. Probably my ability to navigate quickly, and move quickly through branchy woods. I felt fine afterwards and am happy with the result.

Same Pleasant Valley-181-Hartland Pond route AGAIN! I guess I like it. I also started too late to tour the other side of the rez. Cooler today.

Start at Riverton, down River Road (newly paved since the last time I rode it, and wonderfully smooth), then the same route as the last 3 or so rides. I like that ride, but I'll branch out soon. Seems at tho' I used lower gears today than previous days but times are comparable. Perfect temp and relatively low humidity.

Fast walk around Red Trail, plus a bit of Hogback Lookout trail and lake road. Interesting low-angle light from the low sun thru the forest via a logged opening. Lots of beautiful little sedges flourishing in the light since the logging. Renewed interest in using existing topo and LIDAR to make a little map of this area, and learning a little more of the history to imagine the lives of the people who built all these walls.

Pleasant Valley to Hartland Pond via 181 (Center Hill Road). Muggy but not deathly hot.
