Highlights were the beautiful afternoon with some new snow remaining in the woods, the black bear sow and three cubs on the roadside as we approached our course area, most depressions fully flooded since the soil is still frozen, lots of songbirds just starting to return (dark-eyed junco, robin, varied thrush, yellow-rumped or orange-crowned warbler, ruby-crowned kinglet, grey jay, fox sparrow), and lots of frogs croaking! some of the trails have become too indistinct so hung some streamers, and we'll have to re-route the yellow and white a bit.

A single-track loop north of gasline. 6 inches of mashed potato snow over combo of mud and old packed snow track. Felt good for first part. I prob need to stay off the trails 'til the mud dries out now. 3 weeks?

Note

31 degrees and snowing just doesn't help my motivation.

orienteering race (green at Crevasse Moraine) 1:48:10 intensity: (5:23 @0) + (16:01 @1) + (31:37 @2) + (47:53 @3) + (6:55 @4) + (21 @5) *** 3.98 mi (27:11 / mi)

Nippy with the wind. Good course. I didn't move very fast -- cold, trying to not fill my legs with prickers (finally extracted the last from 2012 a couple months ago) or fall on a fatal spruce staub. Saw the first new green leaves after control 7; it is NOT spring yet. Got tangled in a bunch of depressions - not sure how I missed the right one on my first approach. FINALLY, I think I've finally figured out how to get my GPS watch to find and hold satellites until i start a race: lock onto satellites, start the timer, then stop the timer a few minutes before the race, reset, then remember to start the timer again. That worked tonight except for remembering to start it again.

If barb can put gardening in her training log, so can I. Planted Mom's 2 junior team tomatoes, including digging up some 'lawn' and working some bagged 'topsoil' into the clay crud she has to work with. Somehow, my dad grew awesome tomatoes. Packed for AK, trip to the cottage to install the water system but the critters had chewed through the lake intake over the winter so we just sucked air. Caught lots of mice over the winter. Then, off to the airport.
