strength (shoulders) 20:00 [1]

Full set, without weights.
4 PM

trail trotting 38:45 intensity: (29 @0) + (6:44 @1) + (4:01 @2) + (12:36 @3) + (14:55 @4) 2.79 mi (13:52 / mi) +351ft 12:24 / mi
ahr:125 max:144 weight:139lbs shoes: Adidas Raven-pink

Lovely sunset trot on packed single-track, with flaming red sun setting behind Mt Iliamna. Trotted up first hill but walked 2 and 3. Felt notably better than a month ago, with a month of good exercise behind me and without a couple pounds.

5 PM

trail trotting 31:00 [3] 2.09 mi (14:50 / mi) +220ft 13:29 / mi

Back home. Evening trot in the dark after first day back at work. Felt better than expected after a couple weeks without 'running' a step.

strength (shoulders) 20:00 [1]

Without weights. In Melbourne airport.

walking 1:30:00 [2] 4.0 mi (22:30 / mi)
shoes: Merrill boots old

Hike in Lake St. Clair Nat'l Park. Neither of us feeling very inspired.

Sunday Jan 25, 2015 #

walking 45:00 [1] 3.0 mi (15:00 / mi)
shoes: Merrill boots old

Flat leisurely walk to falls in Strahan. Our friend's back spasm has turned to painful sciatica so we all have the blues.

Saturday Jan 24, 2015 #

walking 3:00:00 [2] 7.0 mi (25:43 / mi)
shoes: Merrill boots old

Leisurely botanizing hike up to alpine at Crater Mtn. Walked with a bit more purpose on the way down. Beautiful day, scenery, and vegetation. Lots of photos.

hill hiking 5:00:00 [2] 8.0 mi (37:30 / mi)
shoes: Merrill boots old

Slow walk to alpine from Dove Lake in Cradle valley, in clouds, misty rain, wind. Then downhill for lunch, during which the skies cleared. Went back up to alpine, to Marion lookout, Kitchen Hut, face trail, back via twisted lakes. Moving as fast as we could after lunch, but the footing required more agility to go any faster. Wonderful views, fantastic vegetation, nice flowering shrubs and fun cushion plants. Saw a platypus in Wombat Pond, which was my last mandatory critter sighting for the trip. Tho' I didn't get a very good look at him. The trail for the first part was highly constructed and groomed, which isn't very wilderness-like but allows the trail to bear the 10,000s of visitors they see each year. I've put the Overland Track on my bucket list based on today's views.

Thursday Jan 22, 2015 #

walking 20:00 [0] 1.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Merrill boots old

Nighttime walk to look for critters in campground at Cradle Mtn. Spotted wombat and pademelon. We've revised our travel plans from a backpack trip to Walls of Jerusalem to day hikes, because one of our travel partners has a back in spasm.

Wednesday Jan 21, 2015 #

walking 45:00 [1] 2.0 mi (22:30 / mi)
shoes: Merrill boots old

Morning walk to look for critters on Maria Island before leaving the island.

Tuesday Jan 20, 2015 #

road biking 2:30:00 [2] 13.0 mi (11:32 / mi)
shoes: Merrill boots old

Rode too-small rental bike from Darlington on Maria Island to French's Farm and back. With stops for a bird walk, wildlife viewing, walking thru sandy spots. Spotted venomous tiger snake, lots of wombats and wallabies.

walking 1:00:00 [2] 3.0 mi (20:00 / mi)
shoes: Merrill boots old

Hiked down isthmus south of French's Farm, across island to see beach on west side, then back to east side, dip in the sea, back to our bikes. Two beautiful empty white-sand beaches. Spotted an odd duck, then decided it was a faded duck decoy, then approached it to find a giant sea snail of some sort, with lots of its flesh hanging out in the shallow water. Looked tasty.

Monday Jan 19, 2015 #

walking 4:00:00 [3] 7.0 mi (34:17 / mi)
shoes: Merrill boots old

On Maria Island. Hiked up Bishop and Clerk. A leisurely hike, with lots of stops for bird watching and taking in the veg and scenery. Gorgeous view of the columnar rocks from the top.

Sunday Jan 18, 2015 #

walking 45:00 [0] 2.0 mi (22:30 / mi)
shoes: Merrill boots old

Evening wildlife walk. Lots of wombats, wallabies, pademelons, kangaroos, Cape Barrens geese. Watched a mom pademelon with a junior feeding on grass from within her pouch while she also grazed. Cutest was when she stood up and he wiggled then stuck his head out of the pouch. The wombats are great!! They've very single-minded about chowing. Mom wombat and youngster together also peg the cute meter. And I saw a Tasmanian devil (next early morning, actually)! Moved like a fox, very light-footed and always moving, darting, sniffing.

orienteering race (Knocklofty Reserve) 1:24:12 intensity: (9:43 @0) + (19:42 @1) + (35:49 @2) + (18:58 @3) *** 3.41 mi (24:41 / mi) +663ft 20:51 / mi
ahr:105 max:129 18c shoes: INOV8 X-talons

Nominal 3.8 km. A couple 10+-minute mistakes. Reinforced a new type of error I invented for myself yesterday -- looking for a control that's along the purple line leading to my next control but which isn't actually the next in numerical order. Did it twice today, once yesterday. Better than skipping one, I suppose. My legs are so tired... I guess my brain must be also.
Done with the O part of our journey. Moving on to sightseeing and hiking, with the focus on looking for weird wildlife.

orienteering race (Salamanca market race) 40:15 intensity: (7 @0) + (1:19 @1) + (9:54 @2) + (28:43 @3) + (12 @4) * 3.07 mi (13:07 / mi) +266ft 12:07 / mi
ahr:121 max:140 spiked:15/19c slept:8.0 shoes: INOV8 X-talons

Nominal 3.8 km. Urban sprint-like, but longer. Almost all on pavement. Two bad route choices but the rest were optimal. Not a complicated area. Tired legs.
4 PM

orienteering race (Risdon Dam Park) 1:17:03 intensity: (19 @0) + (13:48 @1) + (33:19 @2) + (29:37 @3) *** 3.57 mi (21:35 / mi) +840ft 17:39 / mi
ahr:114 max:135 spiked:5/17c shoes: INOV8 X-talons

Nominal 3.9 km. Got distracted by an echidna en route to #3 so had to take a couple shots at that control. Totally botched control #4, with moderate botches on 5 and 9. Then, imagined that there was a control on top of the hill en route to 10, so went over the hill instead of around, but saw Dan and a wallaby at the top, so that softened the pain. Did fine on all the rest. Tired legs. I've probably been relying on seeing others at controls more than I'd like to admit...Won a package of shortbread for being 1st in W35. (I was the only one in that category.) I took 2.5 times as long as the Danish or Swiss lady that ran the course fastest.

orienteering race (Hobart College) 1:23:35 intensity: (14:49 @0) + (8:01 @1) + (29:02 @2) + (31:43 @3) 4.26 mi (19:37 / mi) +502ft 17:39 / mi
ahr:109 max:134 slept:6.0 shoes: INOV8 X-talons

I decided it probably wasn't smart to keep running the longest courses if I want to finish the 6 races uninjured. So I went to switch to my age class but the guy talked me out of it; I'm sticking with the W-35 class. Heavy misting blowing soaking rain. Rivulets everywhere. Stony ground. So I pranced along the trails daintily, not running thru any puddle I couldn't see the bottom of. I didn't go very fast, but finished. And had fun.
Then dug all the laundry out of our car and hit the laundromat.
4 PM

orienteering race (7-Mile Beach dunes) 1:20:03 intensity: (20 @0) + (13:06 @1) + (43:29 @2) + (23:08 @3) *** 3.68 mi (21:45 / mi) +12ft 21:41 / mi
ahr:113 max:133 15c slept:6.0 shoes: INOV8 X-talons

Nominal 4.15 km. Very pleasant running on pine needles and grass over sand -- no rocks. About 65 degrees and heavy misting rain blowing sideways in sheets. Still fun since it was relatively warm. A bit of trouble in the intricate dunes, but I am happy with my navigation in the older dunes/pine forests. Used the vegetation much more than usual.
I appear to be the only woman running all the W-35 races so, if I manage to finish all 3 races, I should win the series -- despite having nearly the slowest times among the 17-40-yr-old runners. It's inspiring to watch all the 25-yr-old women pass.

ahr:120 max:145 spiked:16/19c slept:9.0 shoes: INOV8 X-talons

Nominal 3.6 km. Some fun route choices thru university campus. Beautiful warm afternoon. Race much more relaxed than the Oceania series.

ahr:118 max:142 shoes: INOV8 X-talons

Hot. LOTS of sticks and leaves. Poor route choice to #6. Couldn't find 7 and my brain was too addled to think straight. Another poor route choice to 8. Still had fun, but a little disgusted with myself. Finished 16/22. Overall, finished 14th of the 19 that completed all 6 races; probably more attempted all races but DNF or mp; I'd rather be squarely in the middle of the pack but the heat really took the stuffing out of me on at least three of the races.

Note

Wonderful day in Launceston. Started with another trip to the outdoor gear shop, then ate our way thru the produce market (strawberries, cherries, juice, pastry, honey tasting, cheese tasting, pastry... Then stopped by the design center but didn't have enough time to make it worth the $5 fee, so just wandered around the shop, which held some amazing wood craft. Then to the sprint. Then to drown our sorrows, changed shirts and walked 2 blocks to the Red Brick Road cider bar for a cold one before showering. Finally emerged 3.5 hours later. Had fun talking with a couple historians incl an American ex-pat about accents, mining, retirement, relationships between American and Tasmanian history, transportation of convicts to American and tassie, orienteering...Out of the ordinary for us. Prob not good prep for a long hot race tomorrow.
4 PM

orienteering race 30:07 intensity: (2:16 @2) + (13:34 @3) + (14:17 @4) **** 1.94 mi (15:31 / mi) +41ft 15:13 / mi
ahr:129 max:148 18c shoes: INOV8 X-talons

My worst sprint performance that I can remember. Complex buildings and covered walkways, which I love. But my brain was addled by the sun and heat. I walked around totally confused for a few minutes 2-3 times. I had to stand in the shade to gather my brains. I had trouble keeping track of where I was and where I was going - maybe wasn't thumbing? Of course, my lack of fitness didn't help. Did some walking while figuring out what was next. I did have good flow and generally knew which direction I was heading out of the control. I'm sure I ran across some olive green planted areas. Whoops. about 30 minutes. Finished 20 out of 27.

walking 2:00:00 [1] 5.0 mi (24:00 / mi)
shoes: INOV8 X-talons

walking Launceston. then walking up to Cataract Gorge for the BBQ. Took the wrong trail, which took us to the top of the side of the gorge, then back to water level. All in the sun. Too hot.
