strength 1:20:00 [1]
slept:7.5

Lucy's easies, Marie-Cat's strength for Oers minus the hammies that always result in cramps, and full set of shoulders with 1# weights. All while watching two videos on electrical transmission and distribution systems. (Maybe some more as I watch 'Switchyards and Substations' later tonight!)

Training night up at Jen and Ian's house, which is on the side (near the top) of a mountain. She had set up some compass routes, and some corridors meant for following vegetation. It was good practice in interpreting vegetation, and pacing, and compassing. And the hill back up was brutal. Mostly it wasn't running because the vegetation is so awful from fallen hardened spruce, some lurking within the tall grass. Lots of crawling under logs and generally trying not to be tripped or stabbed by hidden spruce. I'm quite proud of myself for finding all the controls with little problem. My fitness is abysmal. The beer and camaraderie at the end were wonderful. Just Jen, Ian, Springer, Mike R., Dela, Steve (who revealed he is taking on a foster-to-adopt child later this week). Made a date with Dela to help her think about paces.

Skipped out of work just a tad early because it was 70 degrees and clear and the mountains were beckoning. Felt pretty decent. 1:46 to the top. Hip rotator didn't hurt (then). Same issue with the right hip as last time I did this hike. I have a plan for it.

strength (full set of shoulders) 35:00 [1]

Pouring rain, and I AM made of brown sugar, so no trot for me today. shoulder exercises with 2# weights. Part of Lucy's easy core.

strength (full set of shoulders) 25:00 [1]

With a little bit of weight for some of the moves.
Rolled the piriformis (or 'hip rotators' is most accurate) on a tennis ball for a while. Maybe helped a little.

walking 1:05:12 intensity: (11:03 @0) + (30:06 @1) + (15:41 @2) + (8:22 @3) 3.78 mi (17:15 / mi) +440ft 15:32 / mi

Walk with Dan. Down the Hornet's Nest, up the Stinger. We had started an assault on Near Point but some sprinkles chased us home to wait out the 'storm'. Decided on the local walk. I can't wait to tell all the other kids tomorrow that I learned how to tie my shoes (correctly) this weekend!

Note

Last night -- too exhausted by about 4 pm to either work or exercise -- being a slug by the fire at home, looked through AP discussions for something on how long I should expect a pair of shoes to last. Didn't find that answer, but got pointed to Ian's Shoelace site, where I learned why my shoelaces are always coming untied, even tho' I triple knot them: I've been tying them wrong all these years! So, today, I tied them correctly, didn't even double-knot them (unheard-of!!!), and went for our walk. Wet feet and round shoelaces and they didn't come undone!!! Hooray! What a revelation! And I even learned a knot that should make them secure enough I may not even tape them anymore!!

hill hiking 1:37:55 intensity: (11:31 @0) + (43:57 @1) + (24:17 @2) + (18:02 @3) + (8 @4) 5.46 mi (17:56 / mi) +707ft 15:58 / mi

Walk with Dan. Lots of talk about an ugly stupid lawsuit and our friend Bob with a concussion that still has him down after 6 months. That and the flowers made me completely not notice the uphill. Or maybe we were just going slowly. Compared two routes out and back, and found the scenic narrow one is only 1 minute and maybe 800 feet longer than the ugly dog poop road route. I'll be opting for the pretty trail more often, esp when with others to help scare away the lurking beasts.

Walk with Dan. Still feeling a bit under-spritely.

Started out to Near Point, but bagged it at the last intersection. Dan wasn't going any farther, and my pulled glute/piriformis was not feeling so good. But a beautiful walk in the sun.

strength (shoulders, hips, guts) 1:45:00 [1]

Lucy's easies - guts
Full set of shoulders
Mari-Cat's, minus hammies and some planks
Peggy Brill's upper body weight working w/o machines.
Pulled out my Peggy Brill core program book from a decade ago, intending to start that up.

hill hiking 2:00:07 intensity: (54:57 @0) + (40:12 @1) + (22:47 @2) + (2:11 @3) 4.15 mi (28:57 / mi) +754ft 24:42 / mi
ahr:90 max:123 shoes: Sportiva blue trailers

Leisurely walk with Dan, Rob, and Jo. Alder trail to south fork rim to panorama. Bazillions of gorgeous flowers out.

Friday Jul 18, 2014 #

Note

Seriously knotted glute or piriformis. Aargh. (Tho' not my excuse for no exercise. Just went out for beer instead.)

Oh how miserable was my little 'trot' tonight. My 3+ weeks off have taken a toll. But my attention was diverted from some of the pain by a single-track single-speed bike race going on around me. They must have been required to have bells on their bikes, so it was fun to hear how close the adjacent trails are even tho I couldn't see them. Route looks like Upper Hornet's Nest-Yellow Jacket-gasline-home.

Very slow trot. Back to some exercise after a week of rotten cold-flu-sinus crud, a week of field work on the North Slope with the crud, and another week gradually getting over the crud. The field work was not much exercise and not much sleep.
