Through the park.

Orienteering (Park Race) 33:05 [4] ** 5.2 km (6:22 / km)
shoes: Adidas Adistar Salvations

SLOW Bishop's Park race, running the long course. Very hot and humid evening, found the heat getting to me on the later road legs (because of the unusual nature of the map, there was quite a lot of road running on this course.)

Some tricky technical legs caught me out and I ended up in a couple of traps. I also ran straight past one control, resulting in my biggest mistake (45 seconds) - I finished 8th out of 88, but would have finished 4th without this mistake.
11 PM

Cycling (To/from Event) 1:13:11 [3] 28.57 km (2:34 / km)

Work to Bishop's Park (Putney Bridge), then later home via King's Road. Incidentally tonight's race was marginally further away than last night's meeting, so why I travelled 5km less today, I do not know.

Cycling (To/from Event) 1:22:13 [4] 34.07 km (2:25 / km)

Work to Wandsworth, then later back home, via a bit of a roundabout route (going past Wandsworth Prison), then from Clapham High Street, followed the new Cycle Superhighway 7 down to Elephant and Castle. Pushed very hard indeed on this section (the chicane at Stockwell is now particularly annoying).

Cycling (From station) 23:17 [3] 9.47 km (2:28 / km)

Back home from Waterloo, taking a longer (but quieter) route via Cable Street.
1 PM

Cycling (To/from station) 1:08:21 [2] 20.71 km (3:18 / km)

To London Bridge, then later to King's Cross and then home, via the supermarket. Didn't make it to the event though. :-(

Trail Running race (parkrun) 19:19 [4] 5.0 km (3:52 / km)
shoes: Adidas Adistar Salvations

Hackney Marshes parkrun. First time I ran (I've volunteered for three previous runs.) Small field today - guess most people are on holiday. Crucially, this included all the good people, so I won! First win at any race for several years.

Was just behind the leading pack of three to the first bend (500m) but they suddenly slowed down at the bend, I overtook them and ended up around 200m ahead of them at the finish.

The course has been tweaked once again - the Olympic building site in East Marsh is gradually encroaching, so the lap around there continues to shrink and the finish is accordingly put further beyond the point of completing the loop and passing the start.

Didn't have GPS or watch, so was running "blind".

Cycle Commuting (In to Work) 23:32 [3] 8.44 km (2:47 / km)

Feeling fit following a week in Sweden. Strong headwind before the canal section but was able to keep up a good pace here (+ was running a bit late.)
9 PM

Cycle Commuting (Back Home) 33:33 [2] 11.2 km (3:00 / km)

Stopping off at the UCL main site and the Skinners Arms. Still feeling strong.

Note

No training today due to the long race in the evening, but went for a walk from the club hut up to the tower at Dragonkullen - about 1.5km away. I didn't take my camera, but the view looked like this: http://www.ia-stud.hiof.no/~runedbec/test/vastra-g...

Orienteering race (Gränsjakten) 1:33:34 [3] ***** 8.8 km (10:38 / km)
15c shoes: Adidas Swoop 2s

Day 3 of Gränsjakten - the long course. Made four big mistakes (12 minutes altogether) and so finished behind quite a few people I'd beaten at the other two days. There were two long legs, and I took a poor route to the first one, tiring me out for the middle section of the race. The race was a chasing start - I started seven seconds ahead of Matt but with a 90 second gap either side of us. I kept just in front of him for the first three controls, and would have probably been able to stay with him for longer if I hadn't made a four minute mistake at number four (a tricky control on a steep, boulder-strewn hillside.)

No training today as it was raining.

Orienteering race (Gränsjakten) 45:08 [4] ***** 4.7 km (9:36 / km)
15c shoes: Adidas Swoop 2s

Day 2 of Gränsjakten - the middle race. A humid evening and wet underfoot, but no rain. This was my best race of the week, despite a couple of small mistakes, I was able to run strongly on many sections, spiked several of the controls, and picked up the pace at the end, finishing with plenty of energy to spare.

Orienteering race (Gränsjakten) 23:41 [5] **** 2.7 km (8:46 / km)
18c shoes: Adidas Swoop 2s

Day 1 of Gränsjakten - an evening sprint race around Hälle - although the race was almost entirely terrain rather than urban. Made two big (for a sprint) mistakes at No. 1 and 4 - for the first leg, I made a 90 degree error because I didn't spot the correct path which was obscured by the start triangle on the map! It took a while to realise what I had done, especially as I was reassured by some signs with smiley faces on them as I ran past - turns out these are for the off-string course, not an indication I was on the legal route through OOB buildings. This was a 105 second mistake. The second mistake was again caused by the signs - this time an unhappy face sign caused me to mistakenly think the path I was on was OOB so I came off it and had to fight through some dense woodland, wasting 30 seconds. Had a strong finish though, and pleased with my result, particularly as I beat plenty of my tour peers - but not the locals!

Theme Orienteering (Sweden Training Tour) 2:00:00 [2] ***** 7.0 km (17:09 / km)
shoes: Adidas Swoop 2s

Relocation exercise with Pete, in the SE part of the Kasen map. Got badly caught out by various parallel errors at one of the later controls.
