Cycle race 2:43:43 [5] 27.15 km (6:02 / km) +1078m 5:02 / km
ahr:147 max:163 weight:76kg shoes: Carve Pro MTB

Mt Baw Baw was unexpectedly COLD. Race was revised from 4 to 3 hours.

Ground was still wet from night before, not muddy but very slow and spongy.

Some new trails were freshly cut and these were very soft.

The 7km circuit is steep up or down, there are no flat sections. The altitude also plays a big part at 1500m compared to riding most of the time at sea level.

Started at a good pace but avoided the urge to sprint after the leaders, this paid off as at that altitude I would have exploded after any sprinting. Within 10 minutes the positions were generally set and then the next 4 laps I only traded places with two other guys except for passing some back-markers and getting lapped by the leaders.

All in 4 laps, had time to fit in a 5th, but would not have made it, the steep uphill section on the summit trail were just too much at that altitude.

Overall great race, great location and will be back. Will do more training at altitude though.
