Adventure Racing (Thunder Rolls AR) 22:00:00 [3] 151.0 km (8:45 / km)

Simpy, my friend Matthew and I made the drive over to Illinois for this race. The team was great, the course was interesting, and the organization was spot on.

A few highlights:
- Quick tempo run to start the race in my boxers as the heat and humidity was still scorching at the midnight start time. We kept the leaders in sight on this run and were second in on the paddle. True to its race name, we watched an approaching thunder storm roll in as we left camp.
- One of my favourite paddles in an AR, we went mostly downstream through a 30 foot wide, and quite deep and fast moving, river. Had to navigate around fallen trees, beaver dams, and some debris dams.
- Seeing a lot of deer bolt across the road at night while we biked and seeing more still in the early morning hours galloping through the farm fields.
- Rappelling a 100 foot cliff alongside the Mississippi River and ascending back up a short while later
- Excellent air conditioned accommodations, post race hot showers, post race dinner, post race hot breakfast.
- Finishing a 24 hour race on a Saturday night and being able to completely rest up overnight before having to drive back on Sunday.
- Matthew completing his first overnight race in strong fashion and Simpy looking physically strong throughout the race.
- Simpy providing excellent bike and paddle navigation.
- We won a really nice The North Face base camp duffel travel bag.

A few negatives
- Not realizing that the stinging nettle was so bad and that our choice of running tights was a bad idea for all the burs and thorns. My legs, arms and forehead got excessively scratched up.
- Coming back to base camp and having to go out on another rogaine course while hearing the finish line music play and know there is pizza, beer, and hot showers waiting at said finish line.
- My navigation on the orienteering sections was not great.
- Knee pain plagued me from the 11 hour mark onwards. The boys helped me fight through it.

I think we have Matthew hooked for more overnight longer races. Big thanks to my teammates for helping me through this race. Now to parlay these learning experiences into the next race - Wilderness Traverse.

Running (Rail Trail) 20:00 [3]

Just a quick run this morning with a full pack (sans water) to ensure the pack felt right. It felt fine, the legs felt heavy.
