Back from a quality two-part holiday. The last time I was in work feels ages ago. Need a bit of recovery then some fell races. I thought I had got over my shin but some hard limestone slopes set it off I think. Will see how the next week goes then might try some intervals depending how things are.

Fell Race race (Stiperstones) 28:50 [3] 5.8 km (4:58 / km) +366m 3:47 / km

Hectic night packing, followed by hectic day driving all over, meant I got there not long before the start and had no warm up.

Thankfully Daniel Connelly and Jack Agnew were missing and the gentle start meant it was okay.

Shadowed Dan Maskew to almost the top, breaking a little on the final steep steps. Got him before the first descent but my knobbing back meant I couldn’t go full speed and Andy Watkins almost caught me by the bottom.

Got away from him on the next climb and then did the best racing I could to keep away from Dan catching me again before the final decent, he didn’t. Comfortable down and round the road to finally finish first.

Was expecting Andy to be second but it was actually Dan, with Andy finishing in sixth!

Minute down on last year.

Was supposed to be swimming, but the only pool which was open turned out to be social swimming in an L-shaped pool with no lanes. So I did some swimming, some stretching and some self-massage instead

Fell Race race (Viking Chase) 1:07:28 [3] 12.62 km (5:21 / km) +375m 4:39 / km

Nice and fun. Four hills on the way out, traverse all the way back.

In the mix at the top of the first, had to hold back on the descent because of the back and a couple got ahead. A Knavesmire guy came up from behind and we were a group of four at the top of the second.

Got left by the two Knavesmire guys with topless-guy; him getting away on the descents and me catching up on the uphills. Quite a lot of flat though where we were even.

Got to the far end drinks point in fourth and allowed another Knavesmire to come past. Tough little hill before starting the traverse through the woods where I didn't have much to give. Glimpsed topless-guy ahead at one point but by the time we got to the open he was even further ahead.

It was doable though so I put some effort in and caught him with about 800m to go. Bit of racing and then put the boot in on the little incline into the finish.

Put a cheeky few efforts in here and there. Not too tired, a little knee pain on the sides towards the end, feet took a bit of a beating.

Back still dodgy. Slowly trying to become an athlete again. Scared of shin-splints if I ever do intervals on the road again, not sure if track/grass will be okay if I go back to Birchfield (not fit enough anyway right now).

Won't have much endurance for Dolomites but my legs are as strong as they have ever been. Followed by OO-Cup to remind me how to orienteer.

Will do some short fell races in August I think and try and do well.

If I had some injury-free time and consistent training Estonia and Latvia would have been good terrain for me but oh well.

Will just see how this summer goes.

Monstered the first bit from Coventry to the edge of Birmingham. Was going to focus on posture for the bit through town to home but then I realised sub-60 absolute time might be possible so started pushing again. In the end was 30s late :-( should have realised sooner, but at least I cycled home faster than I drove in

HOT. I suffered, more running in heat I think is required - haven't run since Tuesday :-(

Took a fall over the stile exiting the field in front of all but one runner. Cut some hands and bashed the top of my knee.

Only fifteen minutes slower than last year.

Took a hard fall and bashed my L shin and felt feint for a little bit.
