Art O'Neill Challenge 2014
I was a navigation guide for one of the groups for the mountain section of this 53km ultra race/walk, following the escape route of two prisoners from Dublin castle in 1592. The day didn't start off well when I got up at 3am and tried to make hot chocolate by pouring the milk into a saucepan and putting the saucepan in the fridge. Oops. How was I going to lead 15 people across the wild Wicklow mountains in the dark and fog!? Luckily things improved after that. Conditions were tricky for navigation for the first hour - dark and foggy - followed the compass. The sky started to brighten as we reached the first ridge and conditions were perfect after sunrise, cold with blue sky and seemingly unlimited visibility. We had a great group and the biggest challenge was keeping everyone together. All-in-all a fun experience.

3*6 min tempo with 2 min recovery on Curragh. Soft going. Average pace 4:40, 4:41, 4:27 (strong tailwind). Bit disappointed with that pace but reflects my fitness.
