Walking 50:00 [0]

Curragh mapping. Back of Donnelly's up to Blackrath.

Note

Bizarre injury. Was out mapping for the Curragh event. Sat down to write science stuff when I got home and couldn't stand when I tried 2 hours later. Turns out I got stung by something, unsure what? Was in very close to the gorse so could have been that? Either way, it was in a really awkward place just below my ankle so that tendon has been inactivated. Annoying but not the worst week for it to happen.

Sunday May 8, 2016 #

Note

Taking a bit of time off training. Probably need about a week. Completely wrecked from the last month. Lots of good competitions, but not its time to get some energy back and get training again.

Northern Ireland Champs, sprint (and WOC selection).
Tried today, but I was just plain tired. Only one big mistake, 18 seconds to number 14, and that was because of the 'uncrossable-crossable fence' thing. I missed the crossing point and kept running along the fence, thinking that I'd hop over it later - forgetting that the event instructions said that all crossable fences should be treated as uncrossable. Realised it just as I was looking for a nice place to jump the fence and had to run back to the crossing point. I think this is an addition to the debate on ColmM's log log - in this case, even if you read the info, you don't necessarily remember it when there is lactate pumping around your system!
Staying on the small path south from 17 to 18 was probably a better route. The course made good use of the area, which was rather llimited. Amazing to have hot shower facilities on site :-)

Northern Ireland Champs, middle, Men's open
Easy run around the course. There was nothing challenging, especially when running slowly, but it was enjoyable and parts of the forest were beautiful. It was also a good chance to experiment with SI air.

Results and Routegadget

Eek. Another poor classic run. It was enough for the title but admittedly it didn't feel deserved.
Dropped 3 mins to 1 - ran way too far. Careful after that. -20 sec on #7 in the circle. Then another 2 mins dropped to #10. All over the place to #13 and binned another 3 mins. Frustrating. Positives: compass work was great in most places, ran well in the terrain (try to be more aggressive in the stony areas). 1 to 9 were very good, and made sure to know where I was going from 14 onwards no matter how slow I had to go.
Hadn't realised that there was a water control - definitely would have brought a gel. This might have helped on the last loop as I was totally spent. Collapsed at the finish. Much sugar and water taken on board. Poor nights sleep (Conor up and coughing) so tired going out. Food for thought on my goals for classic races this year: can I get up to a good standard by end of summer?
