Easy hike in Meshomasic forest. Just exploring some of the area.

I went up to Great Brook Farm. I ran the green course thinking that would be a little less severe than the red. Apparantly not for me. I spent another 2 hours on the course today for something that should have been around 5 k. I mangled control 11. It is no doubt the worst I have ever done and I came very close to quitting. I am glad to say I finished, but 45 minutes to find one control. It goes to show I really need a lot more training in different kinds of terrain. I think my navigation is getting worse. I also botched control 2, trails got me again on that one.

On a different note, I was happy to see much of the Boston group like Jim and Andy and Ian and Giovanni and Ben. I met some people as well.

It didn't feel like a quality run today. I could not push as hard and felt very slugish.

Very slow, easy pace this morning. I was going to go a different route, but my shins were hurting, so I opted for my usual that I know has more opportunity to run on grass.

Venus is very prominent in the eastern sky, even as the sun brightens the horizon.

Orienteering 1:54:59 [4] 6.71 mi (17:08 / mi) +145m 16:03 / mi

I think my orienteering may have suffered over the summer when I didn't do any. I made major mistakes today, mainly at controls 1, 8, 12 (I don't know what happened there! I started hearing the road and thought 'this is not right') and 21. I am sure the splits will show other mistakes as well. I got very tired by the end, but I remember enjoying myself for much of the course, despite the errors.

I taped the ankle before I went out, Youtube helped with that. I am glad to say that it went well that way.

Looking at Quick route I now see what happened at 12, I thought I was on a different trail and turned the wrong way. I had trouble with the trails out there at times.

An easy control pickup for ten controls.

I like morning runs, but Saturday morning waiting for sun-up in the fall is great. I felt very relaxed at my easy pace. My street was littered with other runners this morning.

I had to go back to Gay City and do those trails again. It was fun. I still have to walk a number of sections of it, but I think if I go back enough times, I am sure I can ride it all the way through. Really good day for it too!

Cycling 56:12 [0] 13.5 mi (4:10 / mi) +105m 4:04 / mi
ahr:146 max:170

Hit just some of the hills in Glastonbury, not many though. Now looking at the data, it appears as just one hill. My legs have become quite weak. I was feeling it on the climbs.

I also signed up for NAOC this morning. I wasn't sure about it because I waited so long. But after I determined it was only about a 3 hour drive for me, I decided that I could manage without lodging. The only thing is, I will miss the sprint on Sunday. I want to do it, but I thought that would be a bit too much as the starts are pretty early on Sunday.

Note

Wow, the GPS data seems much more precise than my handheld. Also, can anyone tell me, when I hit the lap button is that taking a waypoint as well? So is that what you would press while visiting a control?

Also, there is an intensity scale of 1-5 in the appendix of the Garmin manual. Is that what people use for the AP scale as well?

Running 52:08 [3] 4.46 mi (11:41 / mi) +5m 11:39 / mi
ahr:170 max:183 slept:6.0 shoes: New Balance 460

Having GPS right on your wrist is very cool. I found the instructions to be lacking, but I will learn more as I go.

It was quite cool this morning. I didn't see any other runners, but I did come across the newspaper delivery guy on my street. I almost rolled my ankle again on a piece of uneven pavement. Fortunately, I caught it quick enough without any pain, just fear. I went a different route this morning, but my plans got changed because of construction on Maple street. I didn't much like the route as I went back through the busy section of town.

Update: I found the real instruction manual. It is on the CD that came with it.

Note

Okay, now I have to exercise great patience as I have obtained a new Forerunner and it has to charge before I can start to really play with it. Alas, I will devour the instructions for now and keep close watch on the charging process.

I went with the 310 xt with the heart rate monitor, of course.

I wore my headlight this morning. It helped quite a bit, but I think I should replace the batteries. My ankle felt great this morning. Still staying on flat pavement for now.

Running 30:57 [2] 2.6 mi (11:54 / mi)

I am mildly pleased with myself. I had a number of could be lame excuses not to go out this morning, but I did anyway. As an example, my throat bothered me last night and into this morning. I don't think it is a virus, as I don't seem to have any other symptoms. I am hesitant to say that it is directly related to the cooler weather, but perhaps the cooler weather causes some trees to send out spores or something. Does anyone know?

My ankle was relatively good. Pain is not the right word to describe it as I flex it. It is just some discomfort, that frankly subdued shortly after I rounded my halfway point.

I am not sure that I really ever crave a run before I head out on one. However, there are some times when once I am out there, I am really glad to be there. This morning was one of those times.

Orienteering (MTB) 1:56:41 [3] 8.0 km (14:35 / km)

Many thanks to Becky and Mike and the others for today's event. I was able to do the mountain bike O and it was great. Awesome course and spectacular weather. It was also great to see so many again that I missed over the summer. I am looking forward to more.
2 PM

Hiking 45:00 [1] 2.0 km (22:30 / km)

The ankle seemed good on the hike as well. I am not sure I would consider it at 100%, but I think it is time to exercise it some more.

Note

I met with my doctor earlier this week. He thinks my sprain is minor, which is good. However, he advised against running on it for some time. Hmm, I don't want to miss the Pawtuckaway weekend, but I don't want to re-injure my ankle worse than it is now either. I intend to use a headlamp for these darker months. Did I mention that already?

I needed to get out and do something badly. I joined my brother-in-law for a tour of Old Wethersfield. It was good. I tweaked my ankle a little because of the clipless pedals and having to turn my ankle to get my foot out. Well, I'll be honest, I actually fell once on my right side. I am going to try some easy running this week to see how it fairs. I want to try for at least one day up at Pawtuckaway.
