WRC- South Dakota: I had a good time, but was pretty disappointed in the result. I felt fatigued after the first few controls, so I knew it was going to be a very long haul (lack of fitness on my part). We were pretty much alone for most of our route, which led me to believe that I chose a very sub-par route. I know we traveled further than many other teams who scored higher than us. Also, we pretty much had 6 hrs of time where we were not getting controls yet we were walking during that time. Our first few legs had significant out-and-backs, as well as climb and descent, and on top of that I made some navigation errors. After that, the navigation got better, but our pace was slow and we quickly ran out of daylight (it seemed). Daylight route was: 40-72-94-101-34-84-53-62-102-58-95

Night time presented some pretty tough going and challenging navigation. I had projected that we would be through the loop faster and get through some of the trickier controls during daylight, but that wasn't the case. Made it through 95-57-93-103-74 without too much trouble and then the brain stopped working. I had trouble making sense of some unmapped roads/tracks (really the first we'd encounterd up until that point) and I just kept going down along the creek trail and eventually woke up at the bottom and 4.5 hrs later we got the worst 20 pointer on the course (28). After that, the morning light was just starting and we needed water so we burned another 2 hrs going down and back to W4. The next day the nav went well and we slowly hammered out 48-100-41-60-70-20-33. Looking back at our planned route I think we could have pretty easily scored another 500pts without the screwup. It seemed like the better scoring routes were all to the Eastern part of the map which we didn't get to, but I think we could have with better fitness.
