West Point - RoundPond - Classic - Red - M35

From Middle O experience, I decided to be deliberately slow and stay in touch with the map all along. Managed that part OK but was very slow. Couldn't run even on the path longer than a min.

#1: Went slightly around the hill ahead. But ended up on the road where the stream is crossing it. Had to walk slowly on the rocks right before the control. Ended up slightly right of the circle. After looking at the map, understood where I was and went to the control fine.

#2: Around the hill (right side). Stayed pretty much in line towards the circle. Found first boulder and then clearing, two boulders and then straight to the control

#3: Huge problem after getting very close to the control. Lots of rocks and lost contact with the map. Wandered a bit. Saw another control. Wandered some more. Finally took a deep breath and found the green/marsh right behind me. So, the control has to be behind this marsh. Just walked towards the marsh. There - the flag hidden under the big boulder. Lost lot of time here.

#4, #5, #6: Did fine (but slow though)

#7: First, thought of going close to the lake. But the rocks and steepness forced me to climb up the hill. Absolutely gorgeous looking down this hill in to the fog completely covered the lake. Just stood there looking at the fog for couple secs. Wanted to reach the path as soon as possible so went NNE. Tried to jog on the path. Right wen it started to bend, cut through the woods and passed the two streams on to the path. Jogged on the path N until the veg. bounder and cut across the woods to the other side of the path. Jogged on this path until the small little path JCT right below Tamarack Pond. Took that path until the T JCT of another path. Took right turn on to that path. Right at the bend, took a compass bearing, and left the path. Was very careful... in contact with the map until I got to the little stream. Crossed it to the knoll and then to the control.

#8: Straight. Vegetation mapping seemed quite good here.

#9: Technically most challenging leg in my opinion. Headed 10 degrees left of Red line towards the edge of the big green area. Did quite well. Climbed up the edge of the green. Then wanted to end up at the small path JCT. But ended up 30 meters west of it. Recognized where I was on the path based on the bend and ran east towards the path JCT. Took the path. It turned but the continuation of the path doesn't exist. Climbed down... managed to slip and fall down twice... and then easy getting to the control.

#10: Drank water. Slow, slightly north of the red line and spiked the control.

#11: Again slow, went to the correct cliff (boulder). Stood on top looking down for the control. It is not there!!! After climbing down found the control *under* the rock completely hidden!!

#12: Went north of red line... a bit confused near the circle but after a min. went towards it.

#13: Crazy hilly/rocky area near the control. Few other ladies were slowly approaching it helping each other and took advantage of their talking to each other and followed them to the control.

#14, #15: On the path.

Waited for Rick more than one hour. He had some problems and totally exhausted when by the time he finished.

Overall, it was a great experience going to the West Point.

Sun came out after the race and it actually became so warm that I had to turn on the AC coming home

West Point - Day 1 - Red Course - M35 Group

Foggy, drizzling a bit.

Very rocky terrain, lot of elevation, slippery with wet leaves.

Had trouble reading the map most of the course.
#1: Swerved right of red line and ended up on the Path; Ran on the path to road and approached the control from there.
#2: 30 secs of hesitation as there were more boulders than mapped prior to the control
#3: Slow
#4: Took the road and it was a good choice
#5: Went 50 meters west of the circle and it took couple of mins to realize it and then was slow climbing up through the laurel
#6:
#7:
#8: Stopped too early wandered a bit in the heavy fog and punched a control without realizing that it wasn't mine. Then went to towards #9. Obviously, didn't find #9 but found another control which I thought would be #9. But it is not. So, backtraced towards the previous control I punched and started to make some sense out of the map. Finally, realized that I am at the marsh and I can see the knoll in front of the marsh. Hesitantly, walked ahead to my #8.
#9: Now that I got myself familiarized with the terrain, I was ok finding this.
#10:
#11, #12: Had lot of problem with these due to several boulders and cliffs.
#13: Ok but slow
#14: Ok but slow

Overall, dissatisfied with my race. Rick did pretty well on this map.

Orienteering race 34:27 [4] *** 3.1 km (11:07 / km) +80m 9:51 / km
20c shoes: Asics

As I screwed up Middle, I decided to run the sprint with a bit more focus.

Was quite tired but ate a bagel and a banana. Took an hour or so rest.

Almost lost my e-punch. Dropped it next to the car at parking lot. Rick took the car to Trail-O start area. Petr was kind enough to give me his e-punch to run the sprint-O. After accepting his offer, I just looked towards where my car was parked and there is this little red thing sticking up on the ground. I could find it from 50 meters away. Just felt happy and returned Petr's e-punch and off to Sprint start.

Slow on the sprint. Did wandered west of the #6 a bit before seeing someone coming out of the control. Managed to punch two control that don't belong to mine. I liked the controls around the buildings. Tried to keep up with couple of youngsters towards the second half of the controls but it was just too hard!!

Note

Had a nice dinner at the mess hall. Pasta, Chicken parma, Eggplant. It was nice.

Major(?) Hendrix and Jon Campbell gave a talk of the LIDAR experiments they were doing on the surrounding terrain. It was very interesting.

It was a bit cold around 9PM in the barrack. It started to rain and warmed a bit sometime in the midnight. The pouring rain woke me up. But went back to sleep pretty quickly.

Woke up 6:00AM and off to Round Pond for the Classic O at 7:00AM.

Both days, it was quite a bit of walk to the start area. On the first day, it was 100meters of climb up to the start !!!
