Running race 17:57 [5] 5.01 km (3:35 / km)

Parkrun. Great EUOC turnout. Strong headwind for the first 2.5km and the pushed on the way back, feeling good but outer shins began to hurt for the last km and wasn't up for the sprint finish.

Running warm up/down 16:27 [2] 2.64 km (6:14 / km)

Int local at Craigmiller. Much nicer at this time of year! Started off feeling a little ill as brunch hadn't quite settled yet but soon that vanished and I was running well. Exactly the same time as Rob!

Sprintervals down at the bottom of the mile towards Dynamic Earth. First 4 were very short (400m) and the last one was twice as long. Very high pace and was always mid pack as I couldn't step the pace up and read the map at the same time. On the last one Calum and I missed number three as we went to the wrong inside corner so made it a lot shorter for us, it also had a lot more dead running so could step the pace up :) Absolutely great!

Just Calum, Jo and I as I think everyone else is taking it easy before the weekends races. Headed down to Blackford, did a lap of Braids and then back around the other side of Blackford. Really sunny and warm :)

Note

Fantastic weekend with Seds, everyone was great company, and brilliant orienteering. I don't know where this lack of form on #1s has come from but need to iron it out quickly

Orienteering race (Stickle pike) 1:14:03 [4] ***** 10.29 km (7:12 / km) +387m 6:03 / km
ahr:159 max:172 spiked:20/24c shoes: Inov Mudroc 290

No more limestone yay! Had lots of sleep but legs (calfs especially) were burning on the climb to the start. Again #1 was a disaster; lost track of position and ended up on the wrong side of a large U-shaped valley! Wasted 2-3 mins due to hesitation and poor route choice. #3 was terrible route choice; I decided that the best option was to go straight through the boulder fields -_-. Flow improved significantly after that until #20 where I hadn't looked at the contour detail closely enough to notice the control was 15m above my head! #22 I switched off a bit and wasted about 20s. Pretty happy with my race overall in technical terrain.

Middle distance length course. We ran it as a handicapped race; so I went off about midway, sandwiched between Andrew and Calum. Made I right hash of number 1; went of the path too early and began running down the wrong wall; this wasted about 20s so I saw Andrew coming into the control as I left. Things improved after that and then fought hard on the hill to overtake Ed, Craig and Calum; Tim had overtaken us up the hill but then made a hash of 10 so I was in the lead! Good flow throughout the rest of the course except 13 as It wasn't particularly obvious where the bush was supposed to be.

Area was quite simple with lots of walls and paths to catch you but the race was intense so it was challenging.

Hector quickly planned us a short control pick which kept us in the forested Limestone area. Not at all used to running across this limestone which made it very tough going indeed. Navigation was significantly more difficult but managed to keep map contact after #2. Was very very slow going across the limestone as it was slippy and ankle snapping
3 PM

Orienteering 1:02:15 [3] **** 9.69 km (6:25 / km) +215m 5:47 / km

We had a set of course 1 maps from the Lakes 2010 which we all ran. I only did up to #26 as there wasn't much to be gained from slogging the final couple of controls in my exhausted state! Absolutely love this area; running is really nice and it's complicated enough that you can't simply cruise. Again was unsure whether or not I hit #1 but then got into the map. Not entirely sure whether I hit #8 but then #9 seemed ok so I guess I must have! #14 I was a little off to the south; the rest of the course was fine.

Very tired by the end of it but happy with the days training.

Last FWTN of the year, planned by Rona on Whinny Hill. Nice lot of butterfly loops keeping us running around the more interesting bit with lots of changes in direction. Unbelievably my torch didn't break so I actually had a decent race and managed to just scrape a victory :) Less than a minute separating the three of us! 4.7km 220m

Note

Really pleased with how my legs have coped with the mileage this week. Remembering back on my first (relatively) large mileage week back in October and I felt exhausted and had nothing left in my legs even half way round SOL6. More recently at the end of January I remember fading badly at the end of the Southern Champs after a slightly larger mileage week. Now after the largest mileage I've ever done in a week I didn't fade at all during the race and at the time of writing this my legs feel tired (obviously) but not completely exhausted. Yay!

SOL 1 at Devilla. Nice overall flow throughout the race apart from the first control which was a catastrophe. Started off well on a good bearing but soon deviated and didn't re-adjust as I saw Stephen and continued on. Hit the large track and it took a few seconds to realise what I'd done; bending way off to the NE and hitting the track. I relocated off the open and after that the race was clean. Dreadful error was not paying any attention at all to my direction! +120% Sasha 8.6km 65m

Corridor exercise with a very narrow corridor ~25m but with the map beneath but very faint. Was an incredibly tough course, physically and mentally but got on pretty well. Only had one serious disaster where I became disorientated in the dark green and ended up cutting off a significant corner. I didn't use the compass as much as I should have relying too much on ground detail therefore I found it hard when going across areas with little detail.

Training at Sauchie. Short 3.7km course. We had SI which added a competitive aspect. I didn't realise until I'd finished that the dark green was windblown trees and that they were best to avoid them! Could have take significantly better routes to avoid them. Overall flow was quite nice and kept good map contact in the complex areas :)

2 x 30/60/90/90/60/30s. I was doing it along the footpath but then after a little Kirsten arrived and did it on the grass as it was a lot steeper, so much better! Will definitely do it on the grass next time!

Oh my god Edinburgh's weather cannot get any better! As a results we couldn't resist doing an extra long run, heading out to Braids, into Buckstone, across to Firhill School and Craiglockhart, and finally back via Morningside. Such a brilliant run :) Had a particularly amusing situation when we were trying to cross the golf course at Craiglockhart but an 8ft was was in the way so we had to run on the course and got shouted at by an angry golfer.

4x1.2km/90s. 4:12, 4:20, 4:22, 4:25. Clearly the first one was wayyy to fast! Since it has been such a nice sunny day today, the Meadows was still heaving so there were lots of people lingering about. Setting the pace seemed to have worked a little as at least I never went below 3:40min/km whereas the previous sets of intervals my lowest pace for a rep was 3:48 and 3:42

Putting out and retrieving controls for my FWTN on Braids. Rob really kindly helped collect the controls which saved a huge amount of time. Good positive feedback about the course and only a few murmurs about a couple of the controls being blown out of their original position. Surprised how many people were there despite the awful forecast!!

Circuits set up has changed again. Now there are 8 stations, each with 'a' and 'b'. 25 secs on 'a' then 25s on 'b', and then onto the next station. I'ts definitely shorter but really intense!

No one else was there so was all on my own :(. Decided not to check the control sites for tomorrows FWTN as I thought I'd have been interrupting golfers, I'll leave that till tomorrow! Went down to the canal to Craiglockhart, around to Firhill School; and back via Blackford.

Heart rate monitor not reading again... Again I'm confused why I run faster during a 5km parkrun than when I'm doing intervals despite feeling like I'm going as fast as I can?! I did 6 x 1km with varying times between 3:35 and 3:48. One aspect of it is definitely running with people makes it easier to maintain a pace. Felt good running though :)

ESOC local at Corstophine hill. A couple of the controls #11, and #14 were pretty dubious but otherwise it was as expected; map being a bit rubbish and lots of brambles! Run could have been better, but was glad to find that I wasn't too tired from the parkrun this morning :)
