Coniston Fell Race - 4th

Legs felt really good pre-race so went with the early pace up the first steep climb with Jebby and John Helme. Then struggled and lost touch on the more runnable path as Jebby cruised away. Had dropped off John too by the left turn off the path as i’d pushed a bit too far into the red. Took some shoddy lines up the next section and John was well away as a few closed in.

Holmsey and Ben made contact on the traverse over to the final bit of the climb with Kenny and Tom not too far back. Legs felt a bit better so tucked into their train and even pushed on a little to summit Weatherlam in 3rd with Holmsey just behind. Led down to the col and tried to set a decent pace up Swirl How but legs weren’t feeling as good as I’d hoped. Ground it out and managed to keep Ian behind as we summited together. He led down to the col as we seemed to make inroads into John’s lead with Jebby miles ahead. My legs felt pretty done but dug in to keep with Ian up Brim Fell. As soon as we hit the flat though he was off and I was cooked. He must’ve got 45 secs my the Old Man. I attacked the descent hard when I got over the crest but I could see he’d almost caught John and I was way back. Stacked it on the lower slopes and took some crappy lines so as I got to the river and looked back and saw I was clear I just cruised in.

Frustratingly Holmsey almost caught Jebby and finished only 6secs behind! Wish i’d had more in the tank to go with off Brim Fell but I think going off too hard probably ruined the legs. Fairly happy with my race despite this. John Helme going really well!

I went orienteering. Back-to-back trips to the Coniston Fells. Started okay and then it all went pear-shaped once I hit the flat section. 3 mistakes with one big one on possibly the easiest control where got a slower time than Selwyn plus lots of bananaring. Shipped 5 mins to the Elk.

Coniston recce - club run. Perfect night on the fells reccying race lines finished off with a dip in the river at the bottom. Legs felt good too and no ankle / calf troubles. Need to make sure to keep rolling and balling this week just to make sure it's fully gone.
