orienteering race 17:26 [4] 4.0 km (4:22 / km) +90m 3:55 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-talons 212 blue

Big 5 day 5- Ngodwana village.

Just not in Sprint mode. Lots of hesitations+bad route choices and not reading the map properly.

Not a great race, but still enough to complete the whitewash over the Irish #5-0

Overall, some rather mixed results. 2 good races in the long distances, 2 not so good in the middle+ 1 not too good sprint. Showed myself that I can comepte pretty well when I actually navigate reasonably and don't try run too fast, but still making way too many mistakes and often way too big a mistake. Think I just need to be doing more orienteering.

Note

Stats for 2015:

2635km of running (81 710m of climb) (Goal for the year was 2600, so pretty much exactly that) :)

618km of Orienteering (13 300m of climb) (Goal was 1040km, so quite far short of that..)

117570m of climb (13.28 everests) over running, hiking+ orienteering (goal 100 000m, so a bit over :) )

21km pb is now under 1:20, so that goal was reached.
5km PB under 16:30, so also reached
1500m and 3000m pb's weren't improved as much as I wanted, but did still improve a bit :)

2016 goals:

3120km running (60km/week)
1040km orienteering (20km/week)
176960m climb (20everests)

4:10 1500m
9:00 3km
15:30 5km
33:30 10km
1:15 21km

JWOC: A final, top 30 for sprint+Long.

We'll see how many I can get :)

Big 5 day 4. Pear Orchard.
Another decentish race. Fairly accurate besides for the open area (#5-#9) where I lost about 3min and then a bad one at #24 where I just wasn't focusing and lost 1min. Another 1-2min of small errors (bad bearings+route choices) on the rest of the course.

3min down on Hector today, so closing the gap a bit :)

Another win for team SA, the pressure is going to be huge on the Irish tommorow #4-0 #whitewashiscoming

Beer O in Kaapsehoop. Took the win. Pretty embarassing for the Irish guys- beating them at their own game ;) (Could've been last night catching up with them though)

Finally a relatively decent run :)

Planned to try go out a bit slower and actually read the map a bit more today+ it seemed to work quite well.

#1-#3 okay
#4 slightly left+ overshot it ending up at a similar feature (1min)
#5, 6, 7 okay. Won #5+6
#8 heading into it really nicely, but then got pulled off onto the spur and messed around (1min)
#9+10 okay
#11 bad angle out of 10 and ended up quite far left (40secs)
#12+13 okay
#14 thought I'd find it easily, o had flipped the map and was reading the next leg and ended up going 1 spur right and missing it.. (1min)
#15 okay
#16 bad angle out of 15meant extra distance (15secs)
#17 good. Got a bit lucky- bingo control and just happened to be running straight enough along the line to run into it.
#18 too far right. Struggling to read the veg here (30secs)
#19 stupid mistake.. Went through the green, but wasn't sure I was on the track, so thought I'd come out quite a lot higher up so ran along the left edge of the green thinking I was at the further left green (1:30)
#20 okay
#21 messed around near the control. Feel like it was a bit closer to the open area than it should have been (1min)
#22 bad bearing (10secs)
#23+24 okay
#25 very hesitant near the circle (15secs)
#26, 27, 28 okay
#29 too far right to start (following the veg to the right) (10secs)

So still over 7min of mistake, which isn't great, but I'll take it after the last 2days. Also managed to beat a former world champion (Janne Salmi)- so that's always nice. 5:30 back on Hector Haines, which I'm pretty happy with. Also quite a few split wins, so seems like my pace isn't too far off his.

Also abosolutely destroyed the Irish today, so whitwash is definitely on #3-0

Big 5 day 2- Nooitgedacht East.

Pretty poor again..

#1-#4 pretty good
#5 big stuff up.. Saw Brad (3min) on his way to #6 and realised I'd caught a decent amount on him, then got pulled off by the higher set of rocks and just took forever to realise my mistake (3:30 lost).
#6 left the road slightly late and ended up 1 boulder cluster further along (45secs)
#7 too far right (5secs)
#8 okay, but should've gone straight.
#9 another stuff up.. A bit low and overshot and ended up at the further boulder+ had to go back (1:30). Got to the control just after Colm (+3min)
#10 following Colm- so good.
#11 okay
#12 wanted to avoid climb, but ended up going too far right (30secs)
#13,14,15 okay (pushing a bit to get away from the Moran)
#16 running nicely along the line, but ran straight past+ had to come back a bit (15secs)
#17 okay
#18 okay, but think straight was quicker
#19 headed off too far right (30secs)
#20+21 okay (just dying a bit on the climb)
#22 too far right again (misreading the green)- 15secs

Close to 8min lost. Which in this type of area is rather poor. Gonna have to pick up my game for the next 3days to make sure of the Irish whitewash. #2-0
4 PM

orienteering 30:00 [2] 3.5 km (8:34 / km)

Some control collecting at Nooitgedacht+ then at battery creek afterwards.

Big5 day 1- Rockery.

Not great, but not terrible either. Lots of smallish mistakes + a couple of not so small ones.

#1 overshot (forgetting its 1:5000), must've run just next to it though+ ended up at #3 (1min)
#2+3 okay
#4 too far left+ went a bit past and to the edge of the valley (25secs)
#5 had planned on taking the path round the right, but went too far+ ended up crossing in some really crappy green stuff (got stuck in some neck high brambles..) (1min)
#6 okay
#7 was exactly where I wanted to be, but must have passed about 5m from it and carried on up to the higher re-entrant and then eventually ended up at #12 (1min)
#8 not keeping in contact with the map coming out of 7 and was a bit confused as to which path I was actually on, missed the controls by a few metres again+ went back to the path+ eventually found it (2:30)
#9-#16 okay
#17 passed just to the right of it+carried on before realising (30secs)
#18 came round the left+ struggled to find it (15secs)
#19 just being lazy.. Came out of 18 and saw a control in the distnace and assumed it was mine, so stopped navigating.. (45secs)
#20-#25 okay,just a couple non-optimal routes (30secs).

So nearly 9min of mistakes.. Which is actually pretty terrible.. Ended up 7min back on Hector Haines and 4min on Brad. At least we destroyed the Irish though.

Lowveld Botanical Gardens. Put some 'controls' out on the medium course for the polokwane guys+ then walked arounf with one of them.

Ran the Long from yesterdays warm-up event. Had to go under 17:33 to beat Sabine Hauswiths time. Reasonably easy in the end (I did however have the advantage of not having to punch controls+knowing the area a bit better).
