Took Eileen's advice and treated the calf like tightness and cramp rather than resting it like an 'injury', so lots of heat and tennis-ball massage. Massive improvement -- this morning I wasn't able to stretch it at all, this evening I can, as well as walking normally, though there's some tenderness lower in the muscle, presumable a result of 7k of halting gait yesterday. Should have been treating it much more intensively all week.
