Orienteering race 1:04:58 [4] 7.0 km (9:17 / km)
shoes: Icebug Gryllo

QOC Super Stumble Bumble. I must be truly out of it, because I never heard of a Bumble. Anyway, the course was good, and the orienteering was fun. The map updates were good. I'd like to do some more running on it, but one problem area, where the 4th window was, was much more comprehensible than I remember. I skipped one window, I think it was the third one. I made 2 mistakes. I'm not a huge fan of mass start races, and I always have trouble remembering to navigate, not just run.

The first mistake shows just how oblivious I was, and It's pretty comical. I decided to take the controls A-B-C-D. On the way from A to B I got off course and ended up at C instead. Still thinking it was B, I punched it and headed off in the direction that C would have been if I had actually been at B. Needless to say, things didn't work out too well, and I bailed out to the trail. I came back, took a careful attack to C and spiked that control good. No clue that I'd been there before, no recognition at all.

The other mistake was just after entering the 2nd window, where there were 2 controls close together, E and F. I got the first one and forgot there was another one. Headed off to clear the rest of the window, and realized after not too long that I'd left it behind.

Orienteering race 1:44:00 [4] *** 6.8 km (15:18 / km) +210m 13:15 / km
spiked:8/9c shoes: Icebug Gryllo

QOC Combat Village Red. Snow on the ground and temperature probably in the high 20s. Only 9 controls in 6.8 km, so there were some long legs. A good course.

I made a huge parallel error on #3, and had a lot of trouble figuring it out, but I see what went wrong now. I thought I was heading up the stream west of the control, but I was actually on the stream to the SW. When it forked, I thought I had gone too far and was on the stream to the NW. That's a 300m difference, so when I got out to the road I guessed my location wrong and compounded the error by going the wrong way. Probably ran a little bit off the map before getting back on the course. About 15 minutes lost.

Everything else went well. It was interesting how I could go a long way through untracked snow, and then start seeing tracks coming in from all directions near the control. Maybe that says something about my route choices.

Speaking of which, I took one bad route, but I couldn't have told from the map. From the clearing SW of #7 (133) I went SW to the road, which looked like a reasonable alternative from the map, but it was a logged-out area with horrible undergrowth. I'm sure the trail to the SE was better.
