Hiking in the Presidentials with Glenn. Parked at the trailhead on Pinkham B road in Randolph. Up Howker Ridge trail to Mt. Madison, and down to Madison Springs hut for lunch. Then a loop to Mt. Adams via Star Lake trail and down the Airline back to the hut. Finally, Pine Link to Watkins Path to Brookside Trail to Kelton Trail and back to trailhead.

Fairly strenuous hike, nice day (t-shirt and shorts the whole time; 60 degrees and light wind up high) with low clouds in the morning, dissipating by mid-afternoon. Great set of trails and fine views off both summits.

Easy run around noon. I stopped to look at a bird with an unusual call, and stared at it for a few seconds before realizing it was a mockingbird. And it was mocking me for sure, because as I went away it dropped the pretense and launched into its usual stream of repetitious trash-talk.

A change in the weather! 75 degrees this afternoon and that was the high for the day.

I drove Florence to the Forest Glen Metro, then came back home and basically ran the same route. Traffic on Georgia Ave was terrible, but the parallel streets just inside the neighborhood were empty. I suppose that's a triumph of modern traffic engineering, and it sure makes the neighborhood a more pleasant place to be. The commuting arteries, though, are miserable. (I used the same back streets driving to the Metro that I ran on a few minutes later.)

Today I ran early (well, before breakfast anyway). Good decision.

90 degrees at 10 a.m., on the way to 100 later today. Stopped to give directions to a guy on a motorcycle. His problem was the railroad tracks were in between him and where he wanted to go.

Cycling 2:15:56 [3] 25.87 mi (5:15 / mi) +300m 5:04 / mi

With Glenn. The Beach Drive repaving project isn't quite finished yet, and we were not supposed to be on the roads. With only a few short sections left to be repaved, it was pretty nice on the new road with no traffic. We spent about 15 minutes at the zoo, watching the seals.

Trail Running 47:21 [3] 4.68 mi (10:07 / mi) +117m 9:23 / mi

At Wheaton Regional Park. It was mostly in the shade. Heading up the hill along Kemp Mill I got stuck behind some horses going real slow. I finally asked if I could pass. They were nice about it, unlike some others I've encountered there.

Road running 36:49 [3] 4.04 mi (9:07 / mi) +62m 8:42 / mi

Feeling pretty chipper today, after working through the usual morning stiffness, and it shows in the pace.

Trail Running 1:22:41 [3] 7.77 mi (10:38 / mi) +168m 9:58 / mi

Rachel Carson Greenway and Northwest Branch trail. I lost the way for a little while just after the first mile. I've been on all of this on various outings before, but I think this is the first time I've done the whole loop. The re-routing of the trail after washouts down towards Colesville road makes the whole thing much nicer. There's not much of the flat gravel surface any more.

Road running 52:20 [3] 5.4 mi (9:42 / mi) +107m 9:08 / mi

Another easy run. New route variation, just to keep things interesting. Looking closely, the track isn't very accurate, but not nearly as bad as yesterday. I'm thinking there's a Garmin 245 in my future.

Road running 1:27:09 [3] 8.88 mi (9:49 / mi) +141m 9:21 / mi

Cooler this morning, good day for a longer run. It's clear that the flooding yesterday ran over parts of Beach Drive near Connecticut Ave. And there was a crew with bulldozer and shovels clearing mud out of the tunnel under Conn. Ave.

Road running 42:17 [3] 4.38 mi (9:39 / mi) +100m 9:01 / mi

It rained hard this morning, with flash floods all around. When I went out, it was sunny with a very light rain, which actually felt great. Later on the rain went away and so did the sun.

Orienteering 21:03 [4] 1.96 mi (10:44 / mi) +29m 10:16 / mi

Bolger Center Sprint #1. Mapped and organized by Nadim. Unexpectedly nice area with open woods, buildings, fields. Four sprint courses available. I did them all pretty much back to back, a drink of water in between. 2.5k, 50m climb, 11 controls.

Orienteering 18:56 [4] 1.8 mi (10:31 / mi) +33m 9:57 / mi
shoes: Roclite 290 Black

Bolger Center Sprint #2. 2.5k, 60m climb, 12 controls.

Orienteering 17:13 [4] 1.62 mi (10:38 / mi) +11m 10:25 / mi

Bolger Center - Sprint #3. 2.2k

Orienteering 12:43 [4] 1.19 mi (10:41 / mi) +11m 10:23 / mi
shoes: Roclite 290 Black

Bolger Center Sprint #4. Finally tired enough for brain hypoxia to set in. I started off with a 180, correcting only after I noticed I should be in the woods. Another 180 coming out of 3, and went around the north end of the building instead of continuing southeast toward #4. Then headed from 4 to 6, nearly there when I noticed the problem, ran to 5 and back to 6 again. No significant errors on any of the other sprints. 1.4k, 30m climb, 7 controls.

Easy run, figured nothing too hard today, until Glenn and Addie wanted to go on a bike ride...
2 PM

Cycling 2:02:48 [3] 19.5 mi (6:18 / mi) +256m 6:03 / mi

This turned out to be an epic. We rode down Sligo Creek to the junction with the Northwest Branch. Then I suggested we could make a loop by going back on the Northwest Branch trail, but we'd have to carry the bikes for the rocky half-mile to Colesville Road. Everyone agreed, but when we got to the end of the paved part, the trail was closed. We started up it anyway, but it was badly washed out. It looked easier to cross the river and drag the bikes up the west bank towards Franklin. It wasn't exactly easy, with bikes. The rocks in the river were slippery, and I gave up trying to hop and just waded. The bank was steep, muddy and leaf-covered. We eventually came out of the woods through someone's back yard.

Only a week ago Glenn and I were on a bike ride in which we also got off the trail and came out to the road through someone's back yard, but in a completely different place. Weird habit. This time the homeowner was out front, and when we told him we had come from the other side of the river he thought we were nuts. Photo

With Glenn. In the low 80s this afternoon, and comfortable. Faster pace, feeling stronger already.
