Road running 39:11 [3] 4.5 mi (8:42 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 17 Gray

Goddard perimeter road at noon on a nice day, 70s, bit of a breeze, and some clouds. I felt pretty strong on this run.

Road running 49:51 [3] 5.2 mi (9:35 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 17 Gray

Hill repeats. 6xhills at around 34s, jog back down. Warm-up and continuation on my regular 4 mile run. No blood this time, but my daughter hit me in the head with the car keys later in the afternoon.

Trail Running 1:13:25 [3] 7.5 mi (9:47 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 15

Trail run at Wheaton Regional Park. 3 loops around the Kemp Mill side, around 24 minutes per loop.

I got bitten by a dog just coming out of the dog park. The scabs from last week's fall haven't even healed yet. I wish I could go home without a bleeding wound, just once.

Note

Total eclipse! We drove to Charlotte yesterday, got up early and drove to Table Rock State Park in western SC. We had booked the Charlotte hotel a couple weeks ago with the idea that we could decide at the last minute between alternatives within a good sized radius. I picked Table Rock because (a) the forecast was better the further west you went, and (b) they offered good viewing by the lake with first-come, first-served admission starting at 7 a.m.

We got to the park at 7:30, and they closed the gates a little while later. We staked out a nice spot in the shade of a redbud tree by the lake, and took a 2-mile hike to help pass the time. It was a very nice place, and I wish I could have done the longer hikes up Table Rock and Pinnacle Mountain, which have huge granite cliffs facing east.

The day started off completely clear, but the clouds began to gather around noon, and by the time the eclipse started the sun was in and out of clouds. Miraculously though, it was in the clear during the 2 minutes of totality and we were treated to the full experience, glasses off and corona shining. Clouds came over again just as the sun began to appear on the other side.

Orienteering 1:02:00 [3] 10.0 km (6:12 / km)
shoes: Adrenaline 17 Gray

Addie and I ran Don Fish's 10k+ course on Gary Smith's map of the National Mall. The summer series event is tomorrow, but we wanted to run this morning because we're driving to the eclipse tomorrow.

We started at around 8 a.m., and it was definitely good to go early. The sun was already hot but there was a lot of shade on the course. And the big avenues were almost completely free of traffic until around 9. It took me right around an hour. My watch conked out so I don't know for sure, but it was 52 minutes as I was passing the Navy Memorial, with only a few controls to go. Then as I was leaving the Ellipse, I tried to run around a guy lining up his family for a photo, tripped on the edge of the path, fell on the paved part and skidded a couple of feet while the whole family looked on in horror. I got up running, with strawberries on hip, elbow, and hand.

Lots of joggers, good weather, not much vehicular traffic, and a nice course, except for crossing the ramps onto the 395 tunnel.

Trail Running 51:11 [3] 5.2 mi (9:51 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 17 Gray

Greenbelt Park Perimeter Trail. Hot but partly cloudy. Kind of slow.

Road running 40:00 [3] 4.5 mi (8:53 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 17 Gray

GSFC perimeter road at noonish. Hot, but a light breeze kept the sweat out of my eyes. The run felt good. I remembered to start my watch, but forgot to stop it.

Hiking 3:00:00 [3] 2.0 mi (1:29:59 / mi) +250m 1:04:49 / mi
shoes: Roclite 280-2015

Table Rock with Carina, Lincoln, and Lance, Florence Addie and Me-An. We started up this trail yesterday and got caught in a torrential rainstorm. Beat a retreat back to the car and did a hike up Woodsman's Peak and the trails in back instead. Today was perfect. Lunch on top where we met some people from Annapolis and it turned out we have friends in common. You never know.

Addie and I powered up and down this trail in an hour last week. It's a great trail to a great spot.

shoes: Adrenaline 15

Around the lake with Addie, then up and over the Howard Mountain trail.

Hiking 8:04:00 [3] 12.5 mi (38:43 / mi) +1000m 31:01 / mi
shoes: Roclite 280-2015

Bigelow Ridge hike with Addie and Me-An. This is an outstanding hike, in northwest Maine, about 30 miles from the Canadian border. Up the Fire Warden's trail and down the A.T., making a 12.5-mile loop including 4 summits: Avery Peak, West Peak, South Horn, North Horn. The first two are over 4000 feet, and the ascents are long and steep. The ridge is mostly forested, but the area is beautiful and the views from the peaks are really sensational. We made 3 stops about a half-hour each, so 6.5 hours hiking time, which is remarkably fast, probably 3 hours better than guidebook time. The kids were great. They've become strong hikers, and a lot of fun to be with.

Hiking 3:00:00 [3] 6.4 mi (28:07 / mi) +550m 22:12 / mi
shoes: Roclite 280-2015

Caribou Mountain with Rob, Veronica, Colin, Addie, Mei-An. From the wilderness parking area in Evans Notch, up the Mud Brook Trail and down the Caribou Trail. Lunch at the summit, on ledges with great views in all directions. Nice day, temps in the 60s, mostly sunny, no wind. It started to rain after we got down.

Hiking 2:30:00 [3] 4.5 mi (33:20 / mi) +450m 25:26 / mi
shoes: Roclite 280-2015

Up Rumford Whitecap with Addie and Mei-An, and brought back 3 quarts of blueberries.

Road running 44:24 [3] 4.4 mi (10:05 / mi) +100m 9:26 / mi
shoes: Adrenaline 15

End-to-end run around Howard Pond and back. Cruddy day, raining off and on, but most of the route is tree-covered and I only got rained on during part of it. There are a lot of ups and downs on this road, gaining and losing 60-80 feet at a time, and although I was taking it pretty easy, it was 10 minutes per mile.

Friday Aug 4, 2017 #

Road running 53:06 [3] 5.5 mi (9:39 / mi) +100m 9:08 / mi
shoes: Adrenaline 15

Around the pond with 2 x steep hill climb (Woodsman's Peak) and out the back way the second time. Addie and Mei-An did most of it with me.

Thursday Aug 3, 2017 #

Hiking 1:00:39 [3] 2.0 mi (30:19 / mi) +250m 21:50 / mi
shoes: Roclite 280-2015

A quick hike up to Table Rock and back with Addie. We carried some sandwiches but didn't eat them until we got back down. We were faster than I thought we'd be.
