Orienteering race 1:44:00 [4] *** 6.8 km (15:18 / km) +210m 13:15 / km
spiked:8/9c shoes: Icebug Gryllo

QOC Combat Village Red. Snow on the ground and temperature probably in the high 20s. Only 9 controls in 6.8 km, so there were some long legs. A good course.

I made a huge parallel error on #3, and had a lot of trouble figuring it out, but I see what went wrong now. I thought I was heading up the stream west of the control, but I was actually on the stream to the SW. When it forked, I thought I had gone too far and was on the stream to the NW. That's a 300m difference, so when I got out to the road I guessed my location wrong and compounded the error by going the wrong way. Probably ran a little bit off the map before getting back on the course. About 15 minutes lost.

Everything else went well. It was interesting how I could go a long way through untracked snow, and then start seeing tracks coming in from all directions near the control. Maybe that says something about my route choices.

Speaking of which, I took one bad route, but I couldn't have told from the map. From the clearing SW of #7 (133) I went SW to the road, which looked like a reasonable alternative from the map, but it was a logged-out area with horrible undergrowth. I'm sure the trail to the SE was better.

Road running 32:16 [3] 3.8 mi (8:29 / mi)

Another one like that. A little cooler today, around 16 deg F.

Road running 31:30 [3] 3.6 mi (8:45 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 3

A run at GSFC, sticking to the roads, which were in fine shape. 20 degrees and a little breeze, which made it more comfortable running downwind.

Road running 29:05 [3] 3.3 mi (8:49 / mi)
shoes: Icebug Gryllo

Looked out the window at 11, there was light snow, but no blizzard, at least not yet. The running was fine.

Road running 37:25 [3] 4.3 mi (8:42 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 3

GSFC perimeter road. Sunny and 50. Winter storm warning tomorrow.

Road running 29:12 [3] 3.4 mi (8:35 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 3

Another easy run, cut a loop out early. I don't know what's going on with the pace. I'm just shuffling along at what feels like a minute slower per mile. And a little hypoglycemic to boot.

Road running 33:06 [3] 3.7 mi (8:57 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 3

Drumm loop. Cool day, 30F and breezy, but the sun was out. Felt slow, but the time was pretty fast.

Road running 29:55 [3] 3.2 mi (9:21 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 3

Dragged my awesome self around the GSFC 3-mile loop again. Fortunately, no piano playing was required.

Road running 28:03 [3] 2.9 mi (9:40 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 3

Easy run at GSFC with Addie. A bit muddy on the off-road section. Addie spattered her new running tights. But it was shorts weather.

Orienteering 42:00 [3] 4.4 mi (9:33 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 3

GSFC perimeter road, easy pace. It was 50 deg. when I started and 55 by the time I finished. Almost too warm.

Orienteering 1:21:32 [3] *** 7.5 km (10:52 / km) +295m 9:05 / km
spiked:17/17c shoes: Inov8 Oroc 280

QOC Granite Red. Started off in pouring rain and low 40s. The rain eased up, there began to be strange gusts of warm air near the tops of the hills, and suddenly I was overdressed. I had a nearly perfect run. Could have been faster, a few hesitations (just trying to make sure of things) but no mistakes and good route choices. Constant map contact and no surprises. This is very fine terrain -- the best in Maryland as far as I've seen, and a good time of year to be there, too, because it looks like the grasses and thorns can come up in the growing season. The rain came back as I was finishing, but no worries. It was great to be out there.

Road running 32:00 [3] 3.4 mi (9:25 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 3

A new route around GSFC involving some off-road, including trails I found while doing field mapping of the area. There are some nice woods, although not a lot of features in the areas I've been. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6175036

Road running 42:39 [3] 4.3 mi (9:55 / mi)
shoes: Adrenaline 3

Running at GSFC with Addie. Left around noon when it had gotten up to 20 degrees or so, out of the deep freeze, and ran around the perimeter road. Comfortable pace and weather.

Orienteering race 1:31:12 [4] *** 6.8 km (13:25 / km)
14c shoes: Icebug Gryllo

Things were off to a confusing start when my daughter handed me a clue sheet, which I stuck in my holder and used for 3 controls before I realized it was for Wheaton last month. I was going to give up on #3 since it was obviously mismarked (according to my clue sheet) and not where I thought it should be, but then Gary came by and said his clue sheet was right, and proceeded straight to the control. Drat you, you rascally clue sheet, I'm on to your tricks now!

Slow on a couple of other controls, not exactly sure why, something about not being sure I was where I thought I was, and when there's doubt it's really hard to keep up the pace. But I was happy with my routes to 6 and 8, which were the challenging legs, and done in good style.

The freezing rain in the morning and the rainy forecast no doubt kept attendance way down, but the weather was unexpectedly pleasant, with even a little sunshine in places, and the snow added a certain amount of challenge to the usual task of staying upright in the woods.
