What was meant to have been a marathon-paced run around the City Runners' Run along the River route, starting a little of the way in at More London. Annoyingly my Garmin didn't find satellites until just over Tower Bridge, and then proved highly erratic in providing my pace.

JK Relays - JK Trophy leg 3 (map 1-CA)
Not perfect by any means. However, much, much better than Saturday. Finally able to appreciate how fast and runnable Hambleden is. Bit of a slip up / navigational lapse at 4 cost me maybe 30-60 secs, while I lost focus slightly heading to 21, forcing me to slow to confirm my location and course to avoid mispunching. Arguably worth it though, as it kept the team (Jonathan Albon, Henriette Klovstad and me) in the event, finishing in a pleasing 16th place, as a mixed team.

JK 2013 Day 3, Cold Ash - Men's Elite long distance course
Even worse than Saturday. Sloppy navigation early on (I was finding it difficult to pick up on the thinly market water courses on the 1:15,000 scale map) and then around 1/3 in I lost my thumpass. Not the end of the world although it almost felt like it at the time. Spent a few minutes looking for it, considered giving up but then decided to carry on.
To be fair I probably would have done as well without a compass from the outset, given the area. The mistakes I made after losing the thumpass, of which there were many, were generally similar in nature to those made before, stemming from lack of care and attention.
Despite an overall poor run, it was encouraging to see the benefits of endurance / distance training, in that while I was flagging near the end, I was nowhere near as knackered as others appeared.

JK 2013 Day 2 - Men's Elite middle distance race, Hambleden
Generally not great - particularly poor around control 9 due to running on loose bearings rather than making sure I'd lined up features to verify my course... or "How to turn a 1 minute leg into a 5 minute one"

Event: JK 2013

2 PM

Linear orienteering race 15:49 [5] *** 3.6 km (4:24 / km)
spiked:9/19c shoes: Mizuno Wave Musha 4

JK Sprint Championships, Whiteknights (University of Reading)
Generally a fairly decent run by my standards (I do feel that my urban / sprint orienteering abilities have improved over the past year or so, or maybe it wasn't that challenging an area). A few hesitations and one or two route reversals, each of which cost me up to 10 seconds.

On the whole fairly fluid; I was often able to quickly ascertain a sensible looking route for each leg and get moving, until.... control 17. For some reason here I checked the control code, having punched, and convinced myself that I hadn't visited 16. I continued round the building and north to 16, only to then realise that this was familiar. Yes, yes I had been to 16. I then about turned again towards 18 and back on course - all in all I'm guessing this fiasco cost me at least 20 seconds.

Could probably have been running quicker too and saved time there, were it not for the still painful right ankle (possibly feeling effects from sports massage last night).
