Climbing 1:00:00 [3]

Solid session at the gym. I didn't let myself rest too long between attempts, and for today's problems, I found that I didn't actually need much rest as they were very much about technique, not strength. Very fun problems. Nice crowd too.

Orienteering 1:21:42 [4] 3.42 mi (23:53 / mi) +193m 20:20 / mi

Charlie has my map so no quickroute.

It was good to see my splits yesterday because it reminded me that this is a race! Was nice to see I was in 5th place. Today I guess I felt a little more motivated to remind myself to move faster because I ended up in 3rd place. I think someone needs to tell Peter Z. that he's way too good for the orange course and should upgrade.

Had a rocky start cause my bearings were all wrong. More surprises and confusion today compared to yesterday (see 6!), but still felt reasonably unlost. The way the course was set up, it was easier for me to tell when I had made a mistake and to re-orient myself. At one point though (leaving 7), I started to mistrust my compass. No magnets on me this time, but the compass is starting to fall apart... the tail of the needle is flaking off and bits are floating in the water. I wonder if that messes it up.

When I finished I wondered briefly if I should wait for Charlie to come in (after all, he'd started after I did). Good thing I abandoned that idea because I ran into him leaving the download box as I was approaching ;P.

This was a lovely weekend event. The cadets were wonderful. All smiles.

Orienteering race 1:09:16 [4] 5.19 km (13:21 / km) +140m 11:46 / km

Crazy climb to the start that was completely unexpected.

Took the trails a lot again. Somehow my perspective has changed. I used to refuse to take the trails, almost because it seemed I was expected to. Now, it's like... well, like I said, my perspective has changed. It seems one should do what's most efficient. Even with the new perspective, you can see in the quickroute that I debated 7 a bit as a crossed the trail. Ultimately skipped the trail, but it really was safe to.

4 was the first control where walked right by the control, looking the other way. Then next time that happened was on 8. Wasted a lot more time at 8.

The way to 10 was amusing. Just as I was telling myself that it was ok to be moving at this pace, because one just can't move too fast through all this "stuff", I see Joe whiz by, as if he were running on a trail. Something told me to turn south at just the right time to find 10. So cool.

Got trapped in thorns on the way to 11 (not fun. I feared for my mountain hardware)

Overall, I felt that I took a lot fewer risks than I was used to doing in the past. It paid off in that I never got too far off track. I moved more slowly but probably finished just as quickly. And I feel like I'm learning something!

Two surprises at the finish. First was Charlie, all bloodied up at the first air station, but all smiles and jokes as usual. Then there was the awesome bear hug from JJ!
