Not sure of the timing because I did some deliberate backtracking when I saw that I had plenty of time left to meet up with Hannah and Neil.
Borrowed Neil's gps so looking forward to seeing what I did.
Used my new trail shoes today. They did well in the waterproof department, with water sliding right off with a swipe of the hand. Didn't have to change shoes/socks today, for the first time. However, they aren't the best fitting shoe, at least not today with the socks I wore and the way I tied my laces. Foot slides quite a bit from side to side and when going downhill my toes touches (just barely) the tip of the shoe....we'll see. For recreation this is fine.
Hannah (thanks for retracing on a 1:10000 for me!) provided an orange
map from the 1993 US Champs at Harriman SP (Surebridge Mtn?). The jog up to the start and back to the car from the finish were probably the toughest part of today's workout!
I found this a lot easier than I expected, not only the course itself but being in training mode where there aren't any flags out. Whenever I found a control it seemed pretty obvious I was in the right place, except for cp 6. I should have taken pictures there. Based on the contours and distance relative to stream/trail/lake I felt I was in the right place, but the boulders I expected to see at the cp didn't seem to be a great match to the map.
Looking at the gpx now, I see that my first candidate for cp 6 was correct, but then I second guessed and moved closer to the lake and picked the wrong spot. After finding 7 and then looking for 6 again (approaching from different direction) I ended up at the first candidate again and finally decided that was probably the right location.
Between cp2 and cp3, I turned right too early at the cliffs before the stream and ended up on the top of the cliff instead of on the bottom, so I had to climb down it. I guess I should have kept going till I saw the trail markers indicate a bend in the trail. But I was thrown by the first cliff I saw, and thought it was the one at the bend in the trail.
The nice thing was I was using contours a lot more than usual today. Found it hard to run on the trails here because it was really bumpy rocky with lots of leaves. Used the compass less than I have been, and again, map managed to stay oriented without effort (so maybe not a fluke).
Weather was cloudy but temp was perfect. BBQ afterwards...stuffed.
