Mountain Biking 1:23:45 [2] 10.48 mi (7.5 mph) +1865ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Ride at Pandapas w/Zitch/Skip. Temps were very cool but a bit humid for the dogs. They were fine though.

Made a mistake and went up Homonym with intentions of riding the ridge back to beauty but as I climbed I realized I would have to walk the top so instead of walking I dropped back down and rode back on Gap. Consequently I didn't get a full climb in but did more technical riding than I had planned.

Almost cleaned Homonym. 2 slippery logs and the last steep slope before the drainage crossing.

Trail Running 50:29 [3] 4.68 mi (10:47 / mi) +332ft 10:06 / mi
shoes: Scott Kinabalu

Run on the cape w/Zitch/Skip. This was a great place. Not a ton of trails but one major loop and lots of connector trails to the surrounding neighborhoods. Couldn't find any maps so I pulled out the phone mid run to make sure I got back on time. Dogs enjoyed the swim after the run. Lots of dogs in this beautiful lake. Will definitely come back to this place next visit.

I think there were some trails inside the main loop. Also there may have been more to explore in the NE corner (loop maybe?)

3 AM

MTBO race 40:00 [4] 2.61 mi (3.9 mph) +580ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

After receiving the rest of the points that we would trek to we got the last bike CP on bikes.
4 AM

Orienteering race 6:45 [4] 17.63 mi (23 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Big long trek section. Had a pretty good plan and thought we could just about clear all the points as we set out. Minimized climbing as much as possible. Luckily ran into someone at the start of a trail we were told was moved an he helped us find it. It was a wicked trail climb which would have been AMAZING to ride down on a bike.

Just before sunrise we had a super steao climb to what was CP 21 but now a new CP. The humidity killed us all on this climb. Pace was a bit slower at times as light appeared. We picked it back up a bit as we were finishing the southern section but were realizing clearing the course was probably not going to be feasible. On our way to the start of the north section we decided to bail on 2 CPs. Also on our way there Earl's foot gave out (again). We decided to just get the 2 CPs near the TA but not push for the last CP. We probably would have had time but wasn't worth risking primarily because of Earl's foot.
11 AM

Mountain Biking race 20:00 [4] 6.6 mi (19.8 mph) +150ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Quick TA and after a short 150ft climb we had a 1400' descent on dirt roads.

Event: Pisgah 26.2

10 AM

Adventure Racing 24:44:00 [0] 111.79 mi (13:16 / mi) +17700ft 11:33 / mi

Pisgah 26.2 with Dan and Earl. Julia was scheduled to race but had to drop last minute and we weren't able to find a female to race with.

First overall (no coed teams, no females) but unable to clear the course. Had to drop 2 CPs that were unattainable. And bailed on another CP because we didn't want to further aggravate the foot and back problems Earl was having.

The course was demanding with lots of elevation but provided some amazing views ov some incredible terrain. Unfortunately it had a lot of out and backs. There was an extra CP available at the time trial (which I unsuccessfully urged them at the start to change to a time bonus). The weather was better than expected but still pretty warm and humid.

Road Biking race 1:01:00 [4] 19.0 mi (18.7 mph) +600ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Fast ride to the put in on roads (paved and dirt). Lots of pacelining. Net downhill.
11 AM

Paddling race (3-p Canoe) 3:00:00 [4] 11.5 mi (3.8 mph)

Paddle in a 3 seated canoe. 2 points were in a different section of the lake. Going around would have taken about an hour but we identified a potential portage. The map showed a 40+ft cliff along the edge and a lot of the lake was lined with cliffs and steep slopes. Luckily our portage was not. Boat was sluggish and low with all the weight.
2 PM

Mountain Biking race 2:30:00 [4] 18.3 mi (7.3 mph) +2621ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Ride on mostly dirt roads almost all uphill. Had an unavoidable out and back to one CP that added 250ft of climbing.
5 PM

Trail Running race 31:00 [5] 2.64 mi (11:44 / mi) +420ft 10:12 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Out and back (#2) to the CP for a time trial. The winner of the time trial received an extra CP. I urged the RD to change this but they would not listen. We therefore had to go all out for this CP to give us the best chance of winning. We were the 3rd team to get to the TT and I think only 2 or 3 teams actually even attempted it. So essentially we wasted a lot of energy and pushed ourselves to cramps because of a silly rule the RD thought would be neat but ended up being pointless and could have potentially ruined the entire race.
6 PM

Trail Running race 1:30:00 [4] 4.15 mi (21:41 / mi) +1400ft 16:26 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Out and back (#3) to Table Rock. This one was totally worth it. Almost perfectly timed with the sunset but it was a bit cloudy anyway. Took some time at the top to enjoy the view.
8 PM

MTBO race 6:00:00 [4] 29.36 mi (4.9 mph) +4240ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Long bike ride that was more like a MTBO because there was no clear route between points. Lots of out and backs and looping back around if you wanted to get all the points. Started right around sunset.
Earl started having some back problems which he had aggravated earlier in the week and all the time on the bike was getting to him. We had to stop a few times on the last climb.
Tried using an old trail to CP 21 but it dissappeared and the old doubletrack on the map didn't exist. This point ended up being a time suck. We didn't feel too bad about the decision when we saw the other way in was overgrown as well we figured we didn't lose much time if any.

Trail Running 33:41 [3] 3.39 mi (9:56 / mi) +713ft 8:17 / mi
shoes: Scott Kinabalu

Fairly easy run. Had planned to run on campus but given the rain I ran at home with the dogs instead. It was pouring when I got home but was slightly softer when we ran. Enjoyable.

Finally ordered the dogs new running vests. Skip's was pathetic, all torn, tattered and held together with safety pins. Zitch is getting an upgrade too.

Mountain Biking 1:19:54 [2] 10.33 mi (7.8 mph) +1788ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Took advantage of more cool weather and rode Pandapas w/Zitch/Skip. Wasn't planning to do any big climbs but realized I hadn't ridden Holiday yet. Rode up and down. Both were slow. It is steep. I had to walk three times on the way up and unclipped an additional 2 times. The way down was pretty slow too but still fun. This is one of the better downhills here.

Followed that up with an out and back in the valley and a quick climb up PC before finishing. Got stung pretty badly on the way back.
