Book Hunt.

Watch stopped by accident. It didn't record what had to be a 200+ yard walk in a tunnel starting at West Campus towards the stadium. Mark didn't know where I had went and then I couldn't find him. After I rode far enough to find him we got back on track.

Without losing each other and having trouble in the tunnel we might have cleared the course. I think we missed 8 books as it was and finished with a minute to spare. We won and now have to put on the next bookhunt.

Had enough time to fit in a short ride. Zitch was sick so the pace slowed a bit. He threw up at the turn around and really suffered at the end. We went real slow on the forest road on the way back. I was worried the heat was causing some problems but it turns out he had gotten into something that day. Good news for future rides. Rough day for him though.

Trails were in good shape and weather was nice. Good to get out at least.

Ride home. Checked out a way going through the new High School. I liked going the new way through Hethwood. I think which school I exit from is a tossup though. Good to ride home again. Hopefully can get in a groove.

Course setting Odyssey Xtreme. Set 11 points. Kept forgetting to punch and label points which meant lots of backtracking to the point. Odd using a real GPS to ensure proper placement.

Stopped at a house for a marker since I lost mine halfway through.

MTBO 1:05:05 [2] 4.25 mi (3.9 mph) +1426ft

Set 4 more points. One was a point I vetted last week. A few points on foot. Made a mistake at the start not watching my compass and fitting features.

Orienteering 58:00 [2] 2.3 mi (25:13 / mi)
shoes: Shimano M161G

Long trek during the above section. Wearing bike shoes.

Slept in a bit again. Better sleep last night. Feel better but still congested.

Note
slept:10.5 (sick)

Was really looking forward to riding to work today in the beautiful weather but this sickness hit at the worst time. Instead got a bad nights sleep and tried to sleep in a bit before work.

Odyssey Xtreme Course Testing with Zitch my new AR teammate. Knocked out a couple of sections. Will do more next weekend with Ronny.

This section was fun. Clean navigation. Found an overlook and a waterfall.

shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Orienteering section. Started off with a surprise. Zitch enjoyed it. Missed one control because they weren't hung. Realized I used the adjacent reentrant to locate it as I was leaving. Thought this was possible when I marked it but wasn't sure. The rest of the points were clean.

Mountain Biking 1:44:49 [3] 9.97 mi (5.7 mph) +1506ft
shoes: Scott Scale 29er

Was able to fit in another section. Made one error as I got distracted and wasn't following along. Did a short loop and lost 9 minutes.

Not sure I nailed the hillside CP. And one reentrant was very subtle but after a little extra attention I found it.

Riding with Z. EB had planned to come as well but got stuck at home. It was a bit muddy but not too bad.

Drove to the trailhead. Homeplace trails aren't quite ready for fast riding. Rode out Gap and back Poverty. Finished on the road to get back in time to dig some more postholes.

Came across a group of college kids camping ON the trail. A big party tent right in the middle of the trail. Right after I got around that I saw the fire they built in the middle of the trail. REALLY?

I believe lap 1 is where the old jeep trail to the west starts.

Nice day. Cool at the start but the sun came out.

Not a good navigation day. Miscalculated early on and took a while to recover. Made the mistake on the first climb. Thought I saw the feature as I came up on the spur that I wanted to approach on but it was a similar unmarked feature further down the spur. I left the first reentrant too soon. Not surprised thinking back but was only concerned for a second at the time.

This threw off my counting spurs. Ironically there was also a small flat area above the spur I turned onto similar to the one I wanted to turn onto which was 2 further east. Thought I had good verification at the road but it wasn't. Realized as I ran on the road that I wasn't sure where I was.

Since I didn't have a route set it stone I just kind of wandered and spent a lot of time looking at the map until I figured out where I was (at around 80'). At this point I was able to backtrace my route since the road but I couldn't figure how I came off the first climb that put me there.

Did I fairly subtle maneuver (at lap 4, where there was an old jeep trail) and did it effectively but when I got to the hill top I thought I had screwed it up and was on the parallel hilltop to the south. The hill was slow going so I dropped into the reentrant to realize I had been in the right spot.

Shwacked home on the "trail" and a new spur.

Saw a neat wood foundation at lap 1.

The 1:35k scale can be tough with these topo maps and no trails. Hopefully there will be more general detail and contour detail in SD.
