Orienteering 1:08:16 [1] 2.88 mi (23:42 / mi) +1013ft 17:47 / mi
shoes: Scott Kinabalu

Went out for some terrain scouting. Had hoped to get farther but only planned for an hour. Stayed closer but was more thorough. Start location is WAY off.

Having trouble making a clear connection across the two big reentrants.

The climb up to the big spur was pretty clear as I followed deer trails most of the way. The top of the spur was clear but not trail. Think this is where the trail will need to be.

The trip down the spur wasn't clear except from 1.65-1.75 mi and 1.8-1.9. No deer trails. The place I crossed the creek was good but then I was smacked in the face with a straight up hill.

Think it will make the most sense to use the spur I went up and follow the reentrant to the road and cross at the road then go up the steady spur. This could also serve as a trailhead.

Ran back on the road so I wasn't too late.

First time wearing the Kinabalus. The hill was super slick with a thin layer of snow. They seem to be ok but the laces don't stay tied at all. Temps were warm in the 40's.

Hiking 35:40 [1] 1.3 mi (27:26 / mi) +431ft 20:53 / mi
shoes: Asics 2110 (#2)

Walk up to the top of the mountain with KT and Zitch. Tried taking the road the whole way. It got us most of the way but then disappeared along the ridge to the peak. May have been something small but not visible with the snow.

Scouted a potential public trail route on the way back down (Split 3). Looks good. Mostly clean and reasonable steepness. Just need to get it down the rest of the spur and along the road (tough part) to the N-S ridge and I'll be able to make a nice loop.

Orienteering 1:56:33 [2] 4.34 mi (26:51 / mi) +1173ft 21:23 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Terrain scouting with Earl in my new backyard. Explored the southwest section of the forest which is closest to the house.

We pre-marked some controls to "find" and had some ideas of areas we wanted to check out and one specific unmarked trail.

Good news is most of the ridgeline isn't private property. The trail goes all the way from Straley Valley to the ridgeline and then to my "neighborhood". The only private property it crosses is that of my neighbors.

Part of the trip got excluded because I hit stop instead of lap. We just traveled back to the top of the ridge and along it before I realized.

Trail Running 1:33:00 [3] 10.26 mi (9:04 / mi) +460ft 8:42 / mi
shoes: Scott eRide Grip3

DC Run. Had a break in my conference schedule. Wanted to run the northern part of Rock Creek but it was a bit too far away so instead ran the south network of trails in the area which I know fairly well. Unfortunately forgot my watch so I mapped my route instead.

First run in over a month. Strength and fitness were as good as I could expect. I started briskly and my legs got a bit slow at the end. I started at 630. Sunset was at 5:10. Started having trouble seeing as I started leaving Glover Archibald on my way back East. The trails were sloppy from all the rain.

I took the wrong trail early on but made a turn at the next intersection to recover. This was my first time taking the Glover Archibald tunnel. Got on the CCT much earlier than needed cause I wasn't sure where the tunnel was. I had trouble finding the trail on the other side of Reservoir. Made logical sense that it would have been to the right but it was left.
