5 PM

Commuting 27:24 [2] 8.14 mi (17.8 mph) +699ft
shoes: Giro Rumble

Ride home. Legs starting to feel better but shin still in some pain. Light pack. Made it up the driveway.

Trail Running - Pack 1:03:44 [2] 4.39 mi (14:31 / mi) +1024ft 11:53 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Homeplace w/Nut/Zitch/Skip. 40# pack (she's getting heavy). Dogs were all over the lace. I spent lot of time calling them back and heeling them. Shin didn't bother me at all. Lots of water out there. PC was raging.

Thursday Sep 29, 2016 #

Note
(injured)

Skipped run today because the shin didn't seem ready for it.

Wednesday Sep 28, 2016 #

1 PM

Commuting 34:14 [2] 8.21 mi (14.4 mph) +690ft
shoes: Giro Rumble

Ride in after doing a lot of work from home. Heavy pack and legs were heavy too.
5 PM

Commuting 25:31 [2] 7.89 mi (18.6 mph) +581ft
shoes: Giro Rumble

Legs felt a little better. No pack. A bit of rain was falling. KT and Nut got home as I got to the driveway so they drove me up.

Tuesday Sep 27, 2016 #

8 PM

Trail Running 35:55 [0] 2.4 mi (14:58 / mi) +342ft 13:11 / mi

Up and down the mountain a couple times calling for the dogs.

Monday Sep 26, 2016 #

Note
(injured)

Bumped my shin hopping a horse fence on campus on Thursday. Developed a large bump/swelling on Friday. It was fine during the race but is starting to cause discomfort.
11 AM

Hiking 55:24 [0] 2.7 mi (20:31 / mi) +596ft 16:58 / mi
shoes: Scott Kinabalu

Had to stay home with Nut in the AM so we went for a hike with the dogs. Cloudy, rainy weather. We went to the creek and back. Shuffled some to get back in time for nap. Was a good way to get the blood flowing after the race.

Sunday Sep 25, 2016 #

1 AM

Mountain Biking race 6:20:00 [4] 34.5 mi (5.4 mph) +4467ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Bike from O-course to Trek.
This bike had a little less trail but the trail it did still have were some steep climbs. The bike started with a 1000ft climb that we were concerned about but was super steady and didn't even require the granny gear! That climb was supposed to continue with another 1000ft on trail but instead we road around to CP10 and then trekked up the last little bit to CP11 on an unmapped Strava trail.

We hike-a-biked up two climbs and got to bomb back down them :-) Felt like a true downhiller.

We later tried to take advantage of an unmapped trail we found on Strava but I didn't map it well enough and we encountered two options and neither made sense so we took the longer way around which added 2 miles plus the time spent exploring the 2 trails. Bummer.
3 AM

Trail Running race 1 [4] 1.9 mi (1 / mi) +581ft / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Short hike in the middle of the bike to the top CP11, Sassafras Gap.
8 AM

Trail Running race 2:38:00 [4] 10.44 mi (15:08 / mi) +1812ft 13:00 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Trek from the Fish Hatchery to the Finish. Took our Brats to go and started up the ridge. We were told CP23 wasn't set and we didn't need to get it but we wanted to experience the ridge anyway so hiked up to Chestnut Knob (disappointed there was no exposed view). Fast run from there back to the finish.

Event: Pisgah 26.2

11 AM

Adventure Racing race 23:43:00 [0] 116.12 mi (12:15 / mi) +15314ft 10:54 / mi

Pisgah 26.2 w/ Jon
Training race for Jon and I to get familiar with each other and for Jon to get his first race back in the bag. It was a success on all accounts. Race course was a blast and super challenging physically. Not a lot of difficult navigation but lots of trail nav. Course was heavy on biking and elevation.

Temps were pretty good and we stayed on top of hydration. So much water that we didn't need to carry more than 2 bottles the whole race. Jon was working off of one a lot of the time.

We missed the views but loved the rest of the scenery and the killer downhills. Jon was strong in his comeback despite holding back a bit.

We had a few small mental mistakes and a couple minor mechanicals that we worked through but otherwise a pretty flawless race.

Kept all TAs to 10min or less.

Road Running race 12:00 [4] 1.6 mi (7:30 / mi) +220ft 6:38 / mi

Prologue
Out and back on the road.

Paddling race 2:40:00 [4] 14.5 mi (5.4 mph)

Paddle down French Broad River in canoes. Windy river with quite a bit of downed trees and low spots but we managed to move swiftly. We worked real well together.
1 PM

Road Running race 6:00 [4] 0.7 mi (8:34 / mi)

Run back to the brewery from the takeout.
2 PM

Mountain Biking race 6:40:00 [4] 41.0 mi (6.2 mph) +6065ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Monster bike ride. Mostly on singletrack with some FS road.

Rode to the forest. Climbed to Buckhorn Gap and Shooting Ridge. Then descended Cantrell Creek to CP8 which was moved 1 mile down the creek/trail so we rerouted around the bottom of the mountain instead of going over. Mistakenly started to take a closed trail back up so we had to double back a little to avoid the closure on Bradley Creek. I started to struggle on the climb back up to Yellow Gap so Jon took some of my gear. Grabbed CP13 off of Yellow Gap so we didn't have to do it after the long climb on the way back. Then descended to North Mills and short climb to the TA.

Our goal was to make it to the TA before dark. We underestimated the time but were happy to finish the trail riding in the daylight.

Was having trouble with my hub the whole climb to Buckhorn Gap. A broken spoke was keeping it from spinning freely. Had to pull it out to enable me to descend without pedaling.
9 PM

Orienteering race 4:30:00 [4] 12.48 mi (21:38 / mi) +2169ft 18:35 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross Vario

Pretty straight forward orienteering course. Mostly on trail up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and then back. Opted for a clockwise loop and then realized it wasn't wise to shwack up to 20 and we would have to do an out and back. Was bummed that I didn't realize that in planning but when we did the out and back we ended up having to climb farther for the actual punch so the out and back may have actually been the best option. Also mistimed the schwack back up to the TA from 17 making it a bit longer.

shoes: Perception Swifty

New @ Whitethorne 2.1ft
Much calmer water than the last time I was here. Paddled down river this time. Had to paddle through some floating grass at times and down one tiny ledge but otherwise smooth sailing and it looked as though I could have gone much further.
4 PM

Trail Running 43:58 [3] 6.21 mi (7:05 / mi) +230ft 6:51 / mi
shoes: Asics GT-2000 3

CBurg Commute++
Dropped the car off in CBurg and then rode back via Seneca Hollow. Light pack. Nice temps. I have climbed Seneca Hollow 3 times. It is a 10 min climb and all 3 climbs have been within a second of each other.

Got stopped at the bottom of Ellet for 3+ mins waiting for the train to pass.

Slept in a bit after another late night of crying.
4 PM

Commuting 47:10 [2] 14.24 mi (18.1 mph) +1250ft
shoes: Giro Rumble

Ride back to Cburg via Wayside to pick up the car. No pack. Nice temps again.

Pepper's Ferry @ 2.4ft

Think the dam released a lot last night bumping the water level up. And looks like they released a little more during my paddle. Paddle didn't bother tricep which is still just a little sore.

4x800 at 2:50

Was just about the right pace cause I struggled on the last two 400's. Probably could have been a little more consistent during the interval.

Midnight Moonlight Run w/Zitch/Skip @ Pandapas
Zitch struggled to keep up at times but pace wasn't blistering either. Carried a hand bottle but didn't drink much.

Wore a new pair of shoes. They seem pretty good for mixed terrain (off trail to road) but they don't come w/ quicklaces.

Mountain Biking 1:05:47 [2] 9.21 mi (8.4 mph) +1301ft

Quick ride w/Zitch/Skip at Pandapas.
Thought I had to be back an hour earlier than I needed to so I rushed the ride. Poor route choice. Ended up riding the road and wearing Zitch out pretty bad. Felt like I struggled up Beauty but glad to get the climb in.

2 AM

Orienteering race 9:30:00 [4] 21.42 mi (26:37 / mi) +1625ft 24:50 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Black #2

Orienteering Course in Swallow Falls and Herrington Manor.
Had a little trouble at the start adjusting to the scale of the map as we were navigating out of the camping area.

Then we had a long trail stretch. I was getting sleepy and started to lose focus. We ended up on a parallel unmapped trail (never saw the intersection) and spent prob 15 min to relocate. Took to the next CP to really refocus. Mind stayed sharp the rest of the race.

In addition to my mind our bodies were starting to slow. Not enough long distance training, no races, no close competition, and no "taper" were the likely causes.

As we started talking about the end of the race and strategy the adrenaline kicked up our pace. So much so that we out paced our estimates. We ended up dropping 3 controls on this section. 1 of which we had already decided to drop. Another I apparently didn't plot of transfer to the park map. And another that we were worried we would spend too much time searching for.

We got back to TA and finished the last couple of CPs faster than planned.
11 AM

Road Biking race 45:00 [4] 8.0 mi (10.7 mph) +1007ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Ride to the finish. 15 min faster than planned. Didn't have enough time to pass by the last "O-course" and capture any of the remaining 6 CPs.

We finished 45 min before the deadline. Would have only been enough time to capture the 1 CP we were afraid of searching for and the 1 we didn't have plotted and maybe still would have left us with a little extra. The remaining bike CPs were still out of the question.

Orienteering race 2:15:00 [4] 5.65 mi (23:54 / mi) +858ft 20:53 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Black #2

Fork Run Orienteering Course
Nice terrain and trail network. RD mentioned it would have been nice to have ridden here instead, agreed, as they did at Nats in 2014.

Recovered from a minor error on the way to second CP. Turned up a creek before checking its direction.

CPs on map made it hard to see what was underneath. Ran some extra trail because of this.

Spent 15 min searching the wrong boulder field for one CP. Once we found the correct one we almost left before remembering to get the bonus CP which I am not sure why we went to it. It was labeled as cave but it was really just a small overhang barely big enough for one person. I found more interesting overhangs and tunnels in search of this one.
9 AM

Road Biking race 40:00 [4] 8.5 mi (12.8 mph) +272ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Bike to paddle. Left at the same time as Orion. Arrived shortly before.
10 AM

Paddling race 4:25:00 [4] 19.05 mi (4.3 mph)

Paddle on Deep Creek Lake. Lots of traffic and some wind but manageable. Felt strong for the first half and less so after that. Was chafing on my back again like I have been during training.
2 PM

Road Biking race 1:00:00 [4] 11.0 mi (11.0 mph) +1010ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Ride to Margroff. 4 different legitimate route options.

Misread a road on our last climb to the TA and stopped to talk to a local to correct our mistake. Lost ~5min.
3 PM

Mountain Biking race 30:00 [4] 1.92 mi (3.8 mph) +400ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Riding around the MTB trails (only off road riding we did). We quickly realized the trails were very slow so we opted to ride up and down the main gravel road in the center and run to each of the 3 remaining CPs from that.
4 PM

Orienteering race 7:55:00 [4] 13.27 mi (35:48 / mi) +2084ft 31:10 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Black #2

Margroff Orienteering Course
We were given the option to take our bikes but without any mapped trails to the CPs we weren't confident it would be worth riding our bikes out there. This was the right choice given the info we had. Looking at the maps now I see some better routes. Probably should have taken a better look on Google maps before the race to figure this out. Would have been a nice MTB section.

Had trouble finding one CP and we ended up bailing on it. It was on a rock in a large boulder field. I think we were in the right spot but definitely possible we weren't. Had a major schwack getting out to an unmapped trail so not sure if we came out of where I thought we were or not. Took me some time moving to confidently relocate us.

Some pretty rough shwacks and climbs. Appreciated having our trekking poles.
