6 PM

Trail Running 18:00 [3] 1.85 mi (9:44 / mi) +500ft 7:45 / mi
shoes: Salomon Wings Pro (Hokie)

Quick run to test out DT socks with new shoes. Ran the walking loop (Hazelnut, RR, Homeplace). They worked well.

Felt some soreness on outside of my left ankle again just barely when running along hillside on left.

4 PM

Trail Running 1:40:00 intensity: (1:10:00 @2) + (30:00 @3) 10.9 mi (9:10 / mi) +1400ft 8:11 / mi
shoes: Salomon Wings Pro (Hokie)

Similar run to yesterday w/Zitch/Skip. Opted to take Skip because I was concerned about leaving him at home alone. He did well. Ran off once and came back soon after. Heard him yelp and cry and started running to him then he flew by me.

Ran halfway up RR and down DD then to neighbors and down Turtle. Up PC, out FS to IP and up then ran PCT to the intersection and then turned around and ran back to TH. Finished with a climb up Turtle and down Homeplace.

Pace was pretty easy and weather was pretty nice. Still really wet and a few raindrops here and there. Getting a little more comfortable with the grip in the wet with Wings but definitely a downgrade.

Saturday Sep 26, 2015 #

Trail Running 2:00:00 intensity: (30:00 @0) + (1:00:00 @2) + (30:00 @3) 10.2 mi (11:46 / mi) +1000ft 10:46 / mi
shoes: Salomon Wings Pro (Hokie)

Half run, half struggle w/ Skip. He was on leash to keep him from taking off. This was too long to be out on leash for him. He was too wound up halfway through and could not stay calm. This meant lots of walking and stopping.

Z was his normal self. The run was frustrating and not really enjoyable at all despite the perfect fall (cool and damp) weather.

Wore the Wings Pro for the first time. Have a pretty good feel. Pretty much what I expected. A little more support, protection, and weight than the Speedcross none of which is a problem. The problem is the grip isn't as good. The rubber lugs are much harder and are much more prone to sliding on wet surfaces. The stiffer sole may contribute to this some as well. Not as much a speed racing shoe. May do fine for AR though just have to be a little careful on slicker surfaces :-(

Run took a little over 2 hours but I only think I was running for 1.5 or so. Strongly considering leaving Skip at home tomorrow :-(

Ran up RR then down N Turtle to PCT to IP. Ran down and then to the trail crossing. Ran back PCT to HH and then down PC, shwacked up and ran back Hazelnut.

5 PM

Road Biking 1:06:16 [2] 18.7 mi (16.9 mph) +1630ft
shoes: Giro Rumble

Evening ride before dinner in town. Went up and down the mountain twice. Saw a lot of deer. Forgot I would need my clothes after ride so had to come back to the office to pick them up.

Took forever for the watch to get a satellite signal. Think this is related to the troubles I have been having with it. Picked up signal at the bottom of Happy Hollow.

HealthCare 30:00 [0]

Had some massage work done. Wanted him to look at my leg and see if he could make an assessment (2.5 years and still no solutions). He's got some ideas related to tibialis, fibularis, and soleus. We'll see what happens. Leg felt pretty good when I left.

Orienteering race 4:00:00 [4] 6.45 mi (37:13 / mi) +1390ft 30:54 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

We had figured this trek leg would be rough. It had at least on big and steep shwack and was in the heart of the night. We left as GOALS tried to get Jason some food but saw them again shortly after catch us after running a reentrant instead of a road. We moved alongside each other (prob 10m apart but felt like 100m because of the extremely thick vegetation. Should have known this as one of the other maps I had pre race identified this as a recent clear cut.

We then split with GOALS again before the massive decent and saw them again at the bottom. We traveled together to the next 2 CPS and TA.
6 AM

Mountain Biking race 2:26:00 [4] 15.9 mi (6.5 mph) +1414ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Left the TA just ahead of GOALS, again, and started pushing our bikes up the 1000ft climb. Saw Rev3 coming down the road to TA on our way out. They were much closer than we thought. That and the rising sun lit a bit of a fire under us (Julia). The next several bike CPs were placed such that you could take 2 routes that were very comparable requiring you to make a choice. GOALS was right behind us and almost passed us several times. Luckily we held them off and arrived at TA just ahead of them.

I rode this section entirely out of the saddle after wiping my butt and aggravating my chafing :-( Tried stuffing some more clothes down there but that didn't work.
8 AM

Trail Running race 48:00 [4] 3.2 mi (15:00 / mi) +309ft 13:45 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

A short trek in Trough Creek Wilderness Area to see the sights. We got one CP before GOALS which they skipped until the end. We then headed off in the same direction together promptly splitting again at the exact same time to run the loop in opposite directions. Upon returning to that same spot we were still at the exact same point.

As we got to the TA we were finished and headed to the boats. GOALS got the last CP and was just behind.
9 AM

Paddling race 1:34:00 [4] 5.9 mi (3.8 mph)

The race ended with this paddle. Fortunately we were finally able to drop our extra boat and paddle 3 people in our 179 Discovery to the finish. Given GOALS speed on the water earlier though we did not want to underrate their ability and went all out. One final portage saved a few minutes and we arrived at the finish 10 min ahead of GOALS.

It was definitely an exciting race and enjoyable to race alongside them. We didn't know how things would end after racing alongside them so long but the pressure from Rev3 behind and Jason returning to life got all of us in the mood to turn up the heat again.

Adventure Racing race 27:20:00 [0] 107.1 mi (15:19 / mi) +6400ft 14:30 / mi

NAARS Championship
Toby got injured less than a week out so we (Julia and I) recruited Johnny M to fill in. He did a great job too punching all but 1 CP, being support on nav, and pushing the pace at the end.

The course was excellent with some great terrain and some interesting surprises (caves w/ maps). Quite a bit of strategy required to determine how teams attacked the course. Lots of controls. Night paddling. Sweet singletrack. And lots of short route decisions on the final bike leg. It all ended with a paddle. Only disappointment was boats in the canoes but mobile TA (boat) made up for some of it.

We were neck and neck with GOALS the entire race. Many times took different approaches (sometimes similar, sometimes completely different) but we kept executing at the same speed. Had a blast racing along side them.

Orienteering race 1:15:00 [4] 6.42 mi (11:41 / mi) +630ft 10:41 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

After getting bussed to the start we had a fairly short foot-O at Stone Valley Recreation Area. Other than going up the wrong reentrant to the first CP as a result of unmapped trails along with just about every other team we had very clean nav. Ran alongside NYARA until they made a mistake and we peeled off just behind them.

Came into the TA first a few minutes ahead of GOALS and Rev3.
8 AM

Road Biking 1:00:00 [4] 10.64 mi (10.6 mph)
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Started with a short climb and trail descent and then road ride to the next TA. Came across several construction zones.

Rerouted on course to take the longer, flatter paved road as opposed to the shorter gravel road. Assuming other teams took the gravel. It seems it was likely a wash but had me worried. Arrived at TA alone and heard GOALS riding in as we were running down the trail.
9 AM

Orienteering race 1:22:00 [4] 4.43 mi (18:31 / mi) +880ft 15:35 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Trek was primarily to get us across the river without our bikes but there were some orienteering controls along the way likely to give them more time with the bikes.

Saw GOALS (and I think Rev3) behind a few times but we were able to get to the river and cross just before they arrived. Water felt good. Would have loved to stay longer.
11 AM

Road Biking race 12:00 [4] 2.13 mi (10.7 mph)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Didn't even bother changing shoes for such a short and flat ride to the next foot section.

Orienteering race 33:00 [4] 1.0 mi (33:00 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

We were upset by this section at first because it was 6 points in a small (~100 acre) area after a super short bike. Why were we here. This is why. I was super pumped to see the cave entrance and the maps. Very cool part of the race.

GOALS caught us after we missed a turn in the second cave. Got back to TA just ahead of GOALS with Halfwaythere just arriving.

Road Biking race 28:00 [4] 7.7 mi (16.5 mph) +684ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Bike down a major highway and then up a creek to the paddle put-in.

Pushed the pace on the bike. Our primary goal for the first section of the race (everything up until this point) was to get to the boats first. We were told there were boats ranging from 15'-17' at TA and given we were already at a disadvantage (3 people, 3 bikes, 2 canoes) we wanted to make sure we got the fastest boats. We did and were able to pick out the only two 17' (one was a Discvocery 179). GOALS arrived right behind us and picked up some Wenonahs which aren't too shabby either.
12 PM

Paddling race 3:15:00 [4] 7.0 mi (2.2 mph)

GOALS left just before us and we followed them to the first 2 CPs. They then took an alternate route and gathered some of the Allegrippis points using the boats. We motored on and dropped our boats at TA7 getting just AL8 along the way which was about 100m misplaced.

On our way to TA8, sans bikes, we spent 40-50 min looking for AL12. We were told prerace that this would be the hardest CP to spot. It was a PVC tube lying on the ground along a cliff. We got to the cliff and no CP in sight. Because we were told it was so hard to spot we didn't know if we couldn't find it or if it wasn't in the right place. We searched a bit and then texted RDs. When we found out who set the point we realized there was a good chance it was misplaced so Julia paddled back the way we came and spotted it easily only about 150m before the cliff. A bit surprised we didn't see it on the way in.

When we got to TA we told RD and he sent someone out to move the CP. Luckily no one else got delayed. We requested a 20min time credit because that was how long they told to us to look for misplaced CPs. Unfortunately we didn't know if it was misplaced or difficult to see which is why we searched so long. That cost us an extra 20-30 min and even more precious daylight.
3 PM

Orienteering race 1:40:00 [4] 4.2 mi (23:49 / mi) +673ft 20:40 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Trek back to where we dropped our bikes collecting a few orienteering controls along the way. Accidentally ran right by a manned CP which we had to visit later on the bike instead.
4 PM

Mountain Biking race 2:10:00 [4] 13.33 mi (6.2 mph)
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Got back to our bikes and saw several teams and boats in TA including GOALS boats.

Set off right away collecting points that were placed strategically along the single track trails. Use a mix of trails and doubletrack roads to get around. Adjusted some of our planned route after getting some exposure to the trails and was able to reduce some of the climbing.

Got the two points GOALS got via boat on bike and then biked along the ridge to the foot points on the southern end.

My route comparison breakdown with GOALS:
Added our way
2 mi of trail
1 mi of DT 400ft descent
1 mi of DT 400ft ascent

Added GOALS way
100ft uphill shwack (and back down)
400ft uphill shwack (and back down)
0.5 mi paddle
1 mi of Road 100ft descent (independent of paddle point choice)
1 mi of Road 100ft ascent (independent of paddle point choice)

Looking back getting the lower point by boat only would have saved the 400ft uphill bike and 2 mi with a 100ft uphill shwack and .5 mi paddle.
7 PM

Orienteering race 1:40:00 [4] 2.35 mi (42:33 / mi) +400ft 36:39 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Were hoping to get here in daylight but due to lost time earlier we only had a few minutes of it left. So we went CCW instead of CW to hit the harder nav sooner with a bit of daylight left but that meant adding in 2 steep climbs. Saw GOALS bikes sitting at the top of the 400ft climb. Wasn't positive of their route choice but figured they were essentially at the same spot we were.

Had a bit of trouble on the first CP. Shwacked when we could have taken an unmapped rd and then got confused where we were when we got back to the road for a bit.
8 PM

Mountain Biking race 1:30:00 [4] 8.58 mi (5.7 mph)
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

We were out of water and had several miles before TA so we stopped at a house to fill up a little before the trails. Hit a few CPs encountering a porcupine on the trail.

After the last CP we had to go get the CP we missed earlier and saw GOALS heading towards the last CP. And then road down to the TA with them. After several hours, significant route differences that meant not traveling nearby, and delays experienced by both teams we were still neck and neck.
10 PM

Paddling race 3:15:00 [4] 7.9 mi (2.4 mph)

Loaded the bikes back into the boats and paddled across the lake right behind GOALS (thanks for lighting up the TA for us). Unloaded bikes and then set off for some more paddling CPs. Debated getting 2 controls on the next trek leg but decided against due to steep schwack and keeping a closer eye on GOALS.

The lake was flat and clear. The lack of speed boats was awesome. The clear night allowed us to use stars to navigate. A moon may have been better to see more terrain but we may have lost the stars.

At the first paddle CP GOALS tried to confuse us by not punching the CP (mission accomplished). We then were ahead of them guiding them to the next CP. Despite Jason not paddling they were moving a bit faster and arrived at the take out a couple minutes ahead. We trekked up to the TA together.

Run with KMama. This ended up being the long run I wanted last night. She carried the water and had the light. Ran the Horse path down to Hunters Mill then followed Twin Branch/The Glade all the way back to Steeplechase and made our way back N to the Horsepath. Watch was working again at the start. Battery died though.

Pretty hot and humid for 9pm. 80+F 70DP

Trail Running 1:02:00 [3] 7.0 mi (8:51 / mi) +1070ft 7:44 / mi
shoes: Scott eRide Grip3 (#2)

Run in Arlington Hills (Donaldson/PHT/Kirby/PRT/Bellevue). The PHT just south of Chain Bridge is exactly as I remember it: awesomely rocky, technical, and hilly. Flying through there was a blast. Really enjoyed this run. Would have been nice to have my watch to compare some of my times to years ago. Felt pretty strong. Had to walk out of Chain Bridge on the way back but was powering up the steadier climbs.

Wanted to run longer but started late. Was on the trails until 5 min before civil twilight and still had a 10 min road run back to the car after that.

There seem to be more trails in Potomac Overlook but didn't have a chance to explore.

9 AM

Orienteering 40:00 [3] 2.86 mi (13:59 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Vetted both beginner and intermediate CP locations at the BROC meet w/Zitch/Skip. Ended up having trouble on one section so I ended up doing some field checking to fix the problems. The first runner came up behind me so I let him pass and ran behind him instead. Seeing as he is a 4:17 miler it wasn't easy.

When I crossed the creek I splashed my watch and it shorted. It had been having trouble. I am guessing the seal is bad which is why it has been fogging up so much lately. I am hoping they will replace it for me but holding out much hope.
4 PM

Mountain Biking 1:15:00 [2] 9.0 mi (7.2 mph)

Clearing the BROC courses and setting the course for Baker's Bachelor Bash. Several short out and backs on Baker's teeny tiny bike connected by short drives.

SNOT (Saturday Night Outdoor Training) for Baker's Bachelor Bash. Started with a campus bookhunt and then moved to controls in Pandapas. DV fell and tacoed his wheel. We tried to straighten without any luck so we pushed the bikes to the FS road and ran back to the house skipping the planned trekking leg.
