Trail Running 1:55:19 [3] 10.66 mi (10:49 / mi) +2811ft 8:39 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Rocky Knob Run with Zitch. Back from a year sabbatical. Lots of snow. I wasn't prepared as the snow at the house was all melted. Floyd still had snow. Parkway was closed (and snow covered) at the campground. Cold on the top of the ridge, low 30's and lots of wind. 4-8 inches of snow along the ridge. Bundled up and started the loop. When I got to the bottom of the gorge there was no snow and the temp felt like 50. Had to carry all my warm gear. Got back to the snow right before my climb out of the gorge.

Slow going the whole run. Had to walk several times on the climbs and descents. Felt very out of shape but might have just been the snow. Slipped on the climb and banged my L knee badly. Zitch ran away for a bit near the start. Very worried. Figured he'd come back but wasn't sure he knew where I was.

This is the second time I have run this in the snow.

Note
(injured)

Shin was feeling a little swollen so opted not to ride. Also gave me more time at work.

Paddling 30:00 [0]

Took the boat out on the river again because of the beautiful weather. This time to Whitethorne. The whole family came along. Zitch got some more practice in the boat and got to use his life jacket. Didn't get any long paddling in though.

Mountain Biking 1:20:39 [2] 10.98 mi (8.2 mph) +1428ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Easy ride w/ Zitch. Started raining during the ride which made the woods really nice but meant the leaves were even slicker. Came across the riders doing the Pandapas Super D. Lots of kids.

Took an unexpected fall were some part of the bike caught a small but high stump. Think I took a pedal to the shin.

Run w/ Zitch around the other side of the mountain. Did a lot of woods running on steep slopes which was slowed by thick leaves. Had enough time to do an extra climb.

Quick run around the mountain with Zitch. No creek time though. Saw a hunter on top of Homeplace but we were both wearing orange and Z wears his bell. It's hard not to hear our leave shuffling either.

9 AM

Commuting 41:43 [2] 11.69 mi (16.8 mph) +860ft

12 PM

Hiking 32:30 [0] 0.68 mi (47:49 / mi) +153ft 39:25 / mi

4 PM

Trail Running 1:01:57 [3] 7.81 mi (7:56 / mi) +1153ft 6:58 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Trail run with Zitch at Pandapas. Sub-40F and raining and I almost wore a t-shirt. Fortunately I changed my mind. Hands got a bit cold and gloves would have been nice. Think my nipples got a bit frost bitten too.

Solid Z3 run with Z4 on all the uphills. Negative split on the return on PC. 1 of 2 KOMs and missed the second by 3s.

Finished 15 min after sunset with barely enough light (no flashlight).

Commuting 38:26 [2] 11.45 mi (17.9 mph) +976ft

Chilly. Think I finally need to break out the warm clothes.

12 PM

Mountain Biking 55:57 [2] 8.14 mi (8.7 mph) +1143ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Ride with Zitch at Pandapas. It was nice for him to get in a nice run. We didn't do much because we didn't have a lot of time but the weather was beautiful. Not too fast either because of all the leaves and my rear brake is useless. Needs to be bled and the rotor is still a bit bent.

Saturday Nov 8, 2014 #

3 PM

Paddling 30:00 [1] 1.0 mi (2.0 mph)
shoes: Perception Swifty

Took the boat out for the first time and Zitch came too. Took it to McCoy Falls. Paddled up to the falls without Zitch. Tried to eddy in one spot and swamped then paddled back to play with Z a bit. Then paddled up once more and then down to an island downstream a bit and off the other shore.

Zitch was able to sit on the boat and float with me a bit. We might try to work on that more but otherwise he needs a life vest if he is going to play more with the boat.

Boat did pretty well. Tracking wasn't bad but it did seem to be a bit slow. All in all pretty good for a free beginner boat. Definitely need to get a better system for getting on the car. The bungy cords won't work if I have to go further than a few miles.

Ride home. Didn't take the driveway. Dark and in bad shape.

Hiking 3:24 [2] 0.15 mi (22:42 / mi) +107ft 13:33 / mi

Walked straight up to the house instead of on the driveway. A bit shorter.

Sunday Nov 2, 2014 #

2 PM

Hiking 2:15:59 [1] 4.04 mi (33:39 / mi) +977ft 27:23 / mi

Hike with Zitch, Granddad, and Nut. Went to the cave, creek and mountain top. Cold. Maybe a little cold for Nut as we got to the mountaintop. Or maybe just hungry. Long walk for her though.

Adventure Racing race 8:23:00 [0]

Adrenaline Rush
w/ Eddy and CC

Had a great time. Been a while since racing with CC. He had significant cramping problems as usual but also brought us some local knowledge. I forgot to get 1 CP on the second O-Course. Didn't realize it until the finish. Bonehead move. A result of laminating the map before I had a chance to draw the route. Finished 4th overall 1st in the premiere division. Johnny was the only one to finish before us (by 10 min) but he got all the CPs. Probably would have added 10 min to our time as we were 200m away from it when we skipped it.

~30 min of transition

Orienteering race 1:00:00 [4] 5.76 mi (10:25 / mi)
shoes: Scott eRide Grip3 (#2)

Prologue and orienteering course. Prologue was a scavenger hunt around the start area. We nailed all the CPs and finished in an hour flat.
10 AM

Paddling race (3p Canoe) 1:37:00 [4] 6.8 mi (4.2 mph)

Used Chris' Discovery 169 with a middle bench seat. A bit of rain and wind meant it was cold and Chris began cramping. We got out of the boat to walk to one CP instead of paddle. Likely took about the same amount of time.
12 PM

Mountain Biking race 2:00:00 [4] 20.0 mi (10.0 mph)
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

After a fairly long transition (oddly not due to me or maps) we rode to a couple points around the lake on our way to the ST loop. Then we did a 9 mile loop on the Lakeview trail and then rode to the start of the O-Course.
2 PM

Orienteering race 3:01:00 [4] 10.34 mi (17:30 / mi) +400ft 16:53 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Second O-Course
This was the biggest section of the race. They had warned us that it might take longer than expected. We were thinking 3-4 hours without really measuring it out. Adjusted my attackpoint for the first CP on the fly to avoid a potentially messy reentrant. Blew the attack and had to reattack from the original AP. It was really thick (making my adjustment understandable) but got us to the CP. Lost maybe 15 minutes.

Only had two more small delays with controls (9 and 1) that I think were slightly misplaced. Another attack was delayed when we had trouble verifying the AP.

Opted for bushwhacking over roads/trails a few times because they were shorter and walking was better for CC than running. Johnny blew by us right after CP 9 (having already gotten 11). We just weren't running fast enough to stay in front of him.
5 PM

Road Biking race 15:00 [4] 3.0 mi (12.0 mph)
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Ride to the finish.
