Mountain Biking race 6:12:00 [4] 26.0 mi (4.2 mph) +2789ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Decided to drop one big cluster of CPs on this bike leg and 2 more scattered CPs. As we started Earl had to give me back the map since he was falling asleep. I wasn't doing much better as I passed right by Kristin without noticing she had stopped at the trailhead of our next turn.

Shortly after that we ended up on a super rocky singletrack. Earl wasn't able to ride cause his shoulder was still sore from his crash 2 weeks ago so we walked the mile long technical rocky trail. Would have been faster to take the long way around on doubletrack and we would have gotten another CP. No way we could have know the trail condition though.

Had trouble on the next CP. It was in a steep reentrant. We had to go in and out of the reentrant to find it. Missed it on the way down. Then checked to make sure we had the right reentrant. Then found the CP on the way back up.

Much more straightfoward after this. Followed doubletracks along long high ridges to capture more CPs. Skipped another because time was running short. Dropped down the ridge and then monster climb back up the next one to TA.

Box Car Rocks
https://www.google.com/search?q=Box+Car+Rocks&...

"Orienteering" section without maps. Just pictures and directions. This was a good way to force us to spend some time here and enjoy the feature without being cheesy. Awesome scenery.
8 AM

Orienteering race 54:00 [4] 2.5 mi (21:36 / mi) +389ft 18:50 / mi
shoes: Scott eRide Grip3 (#2)

Went to collect a few close CPs before leaving to make the finish cutoff. Got 2CPs quickly then headed for another 2 with hopes of getting at least one. AS we approached the pond I encountered 2 rattlesnakes that surprised me one at a time at the last second running across some rocks. The second one was the only one who hissed and rattled. I was maybe a 100yds away from the pond but still not sure where the point would be and we were running low on our self imposed cutoff so we took that as a sign to turn around.
9 AM

Mountain Biking race 26:00 [4] 6.0 mi (13.8 mph) +420ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Bike to the finish on roads. We left right at our self imposed cutoff. 2 descents and 1 climb. Climb was about half the size that I thought it was (didn't look close enough) so we made it to the finish with 20 minutes to spare. I didn't think we'd be able to make it in under 30.

Adventure Racing race 25:25:00 [0] 101.1 mi (15:05 / mi)

Cradle of Liberty
Good race. We could have easily had 5 more CPs. We moved efficiently for the first 17 hours with really no mistakes. The last 3 of those 17 really hurt us though for the next 4. Earl and I were falling asleep, we made a few errors, lost focus on the race, and caught a bit of bad luck. We ended up recovering and finished the race smart.

Earl was nursing an injury but was still able to move effectively except riding on rocky ST trails. I think the course might have even been clearable (5 more CPs, 10 total) if Earl was fully healthy and we didn't have that low point.

Abby and Brent did a great job and put on a great race. Organization and communication was spot on. They also do an excellent job of taking you to the right spots on the course and requiring a fair amount of navigation (some might say too much). The night trek was a bit much for beginner teams.

Orienteering race 10:00 [4] 1.5 mi (6:40 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Climacool

Prologue
Team O-Relay
Each of us had about a 1 mile run to a CP, a waterfall, and back. Kristin nailed her section! (by taking the first leg and following Jason from GOALS)
9 AM

Paddling race (Canoe 3p) 3:26:00 [4] 16.4 mi (4.8 mph)
shoes: Adidas Climacool

Swataraaaaaa (Ninja) Creek.
Started out for the first 2 miles having to get in and out of the boat to push, portage and walk down the creek. After that it was mostly clear enough to paddle the entire way.

There were 8 CPs total. Earl did the Nav for this with me secondary. We slightly overshot 1 CP and really overshot another along with the rest of the leaders. We finished the paddle within minutes of the rest of the leaders.
12 PM

Mountain Biking race 2:28:00 [4] 18.3 mi (7.4 mph) +1225ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Mostly rail trail and road with a 4 mile singletrack section. We collected several points along the way. One was a random cabin with a bonus clue and CP that I had forgotten about. We missed out on this due to this error. The singletrack was fun except for when I took a spill.

2 PM

Orienteering race 3:12:00 [4] 8.23 mi (23:20 / mi) +1452ft 19:59 / mi
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3 (Blue #2)

Excellent orienteering course. Only one minor mixup at the top of the ridge. Checked one direction, then turned around and went back the other, then finally turned around again and went a little further the other way to find the control. The trail we had planned to take up the ridge wasn't there but the woods were clear enough to shwack just as fast.

This loop had some excellent locations. We came across several freshwater springs to cool us off and refill with fresh, clean and cold water. Next up was a 100yd boulder field. Immediately followed up with a random 70ft high, 100yd long ravine. Great CP locations! Awesome Trek!
6 PM

Mountain Biking race 1:27:00 [4] 11.0 mi (7.6 mph) +1114ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Left Lebanon doing a hike-a-bike. Followed that up with a short rail trail ride, a major climb and major descent (80kph) into Tower City. Stopped for a quick slice of pizza and filled our water before heading to the TA with our bins.
7 PM

Orienteering race 6:00:00 [4] 10.65 mi (33:48 / mi) +1387ft 30:05 / mi
shoes: Scott eRide Grip3 (#2)

This was by far the hardest leg of the race. Off trail travel at night always is. We started the trek thinking we could still clear the course if everything went as planned so we weren't ready to drop points yet.

We were able to get the first two points in daylight and the third as the sun set. These points were pretty straightforward and allowed some traveling on roads. We were still good on time. After the 4th CP we started a 5 mile shwack through knee to chest high blueberry bushes. We had two 1/2 mile trail breaks. Otherwise my eyes were glued to the compass to stick to our bearings. Only stopped looking for 5 minutes when we did a small loop back to a road crossing. We then reattacked from a different spot on the road.

This trek was very draining mentally and physically but we really did nail it. Still took 2 hours longer than we were hoping for (2 hours for the first 3 CPs and 4 hours for the last 4). I had mapped a few extra roads from a FS map without contours that we never found that would have helped. Aerial seems to say some of them existed and that we could have used them if I had known exactly where they were.

Commute home. Went to the river first.

Rain started just as I got on my saddle. It then downpoured for 30 minutes. Stopped as I got on McCoy. Didn't rain at the river quite so much. The house got hit hard. No way I made it up the driveway which was in bad shape and washed out. Lots of trees down too. Luckily only one across the driveway.
7 PM

Orienteering 40:15 [2] 2.46 mi (16:22 / mi) +489ft 13:46 / mi

Couldn't mow the grass so Zitch and I went to do some more exploring. Checked out a few more ridges. Found some real clear woods and found the other end of two separate double tracks that had looked like they faded to nothing. Just a few real bad spots. Also found a the deer path to use to get to and from the trails.

Woods are so much nicer with all the water in them.

First "legal" run on the Gaines property w/ Zitch. Spent over an hour exploring trails I hadn't been on yet. I estimate about 500 acres of property. Temps were warm. Probably low 80's with DP in the 60's.

Started out trying to nail down a route to the trails straight from the house. Then went and ran the ATV loop. The old trail on the topo is completely gone where I stopped and moved a bit where I continued. Stopped for a second to look at the map at the end of lap 1 when a bear 10 yards away got spooked. It was hard to see but definitely a bear. He ran away slowly cause it was so thick. Don't know that Z got a good look either as he didn't take off right away. If he had he would have caught him. When he did take off I ran and he followed. The rest of the double track was pretty overgrown and slow moving most of the way. Don't know if I would have made it much past where I turned around.

Took another overgrown double track up to the neighbors. Then came back and took some other overgrown trails to the clear doubletrack up the ridge away from the house.

Moved over to the next spur on the other side of the neighbors property. Checked out some trails in the reentrant then made my way to the Gaines house. Started back to the house via the clear trails. Explored another old trail along the neighbors property line.

Wanted to check another trail I had seen. This turned out to be just an overgrown access trail to what seems to be a pretty significant cave in the ground (@57:00). I tried to look down it but didn't go in. Couldn't see too much. Was hesitant especially after just seeing the bear. Started back again. On my way noticed another small cave (Lap 2) that I had seen before. It is awfully close to the other. Connected?

Explored one more trail up the ridge to the top of the mountain. The trail seemed to disappear when the spur turned to a steep hillside. It turned around the reentrant but didn't quite make it to the other trail. That's where I went though. Finally ran back down the mountain.

Think I covered most of the trails and overgrown trails I have seen. Can explore and push through some of the really bad stuff some more but at least have a good idea of most everything out there. Have one or two more spurs to check out that don't seem to have trails.

Mountain Biking 45:55 [2] 5.43 mi (7.1 mph) +1081ft
shoes: Pearl Izumi X Alp Enduro III

Had a good training session planned with Earl and the pups. Sunny stopped in front of Earl on a downhill he hopped him and ran into a tree trying to avoid a collision and got a concussion. He was starting to come to by the time I came back to check on him. Had trouble figuring out which way we were going and forgot I was with him until I showed up. Repeated lots of statements. took about 30 minutes for him to feel comfortable moving and I still checked on him after that. Not much physical damage other than a fat lip and cuts in the mouth.

Only planned to do this little section on the bikes with a bike drop at the bottom before a long foot section.

I marked a trail intersection coming down Gauntlet. Seems as though it is the intersection of the old and new trail.

Earl seemed ok to do this both by his standards and mine. Sunny seemed fine until we got a little ways in and we saw him limping. We turned back at that point and he hobbled back to the cars.

Only got 3 of the points. Were on our way to the forth before turning back when we noticed the limp.

Beast climb was wet and slow. Not feeling it today.

Left Z in the car for the last 2 miles.

Trail Running 42:00 [4] 4.93 mi (8:31 / mi) +1224ft 6:54 / mi

High intensity run at Smartview with Zitch. Lots of hills. Made my route to get as many as possible. Not all at 4 but a lot there. Went by the only real creek 3 times for Z. Set a few CRs. Been a while since I've ran here. It was nice to be back again. The trail I blazed is quite overgrown but still distinguishable.

KT walked while we ran. The picnic area is open again. I don't think it was open at all last summer.

MTB ride at Pandapas with Zitch. Turned out to be on the cooler side so we were able to go for a good ride. Overcast and breezy in the woods. Pace was on the slower side and he was hurting the last 2 miles. Mixed it up on Gap a bit.

Toe not effected.

My toe was throbbing. Ended up draining it, nerve racking but effective. Still pain in the toe but much better.

Mix Nav and run. Reattempted this climb of Brush
http://ar.attackpoint.org/viewlog.jsp/user_10132/p...

Had a different plan this time and took it all the way to the hilltop to eliminate any possible mistake. The ridgeline to the top is definitely slow going.

Also explored an old logging road on gap. Almost think this could turn into a new trail but when it faded the woods got real thick and it wasn't too close to another trail.

Stubbed my bad (L) toe 100yds from the house on a loose rock as it was past sunset (darkish). This may have been due to the INOV-8. It certainly is ironic.
