shoes: Answer Impact MTB

First commute home. Poured in the morning but then the sun came out and dried most of it up. Overall the ride was pretty good.

Took Prices Fork which worked fairly well. Slow going on the bike trails from CRC through Hethwood. Part of the tradeoff by not going through campus and taking Glade.

Hiking 4:02 [2] 0.21 mi (19:12 / mi) +714ft 4:33 / mi

Hike up Homeplace to the house.

Not sure how this calculated a 700ft+ climb. The map clearly shows only 180. Not a lot of room for error there either.

Midnight Moonlight Snow Hike with Zitch.

6 inches of postholing. The snow had a frozen layer on top. Almost enough to support me. A few times it did for a few steps. Zitch wasn't much better off. A third the weight but half the surface area. Down the mountain was much easier than up. Was actually able to stay in front of Z.

Did some navigating in the forest. Had trouble picking the right ridge to come down at the beginning because I forgot to start paying attention at the top. Lucky to have the trail as a backstop.

Found a decent way from the trail down to Poverty Creek. Crossing the creek was the only rough spot. A steep 40 ft drop to the creek.

Navigated between some hilltops and saddles on Gap. No problems until the last one where I wasn't sure if I had crossed a spur without knowing. I didn't miss it but never knew for sure. Hit it a bit further S by accident too.

There was an old doubletrack coming down the drainage I came out on. Thinking I could use it to better match up with a connector trail crossing Poverty Creek.

Tried taking the best new route back up Homeplace. I didn't see a deer trail on the bottom of the spur.

35F. Finished 30 min after sunset.

More terrain scouting in the late evening with Zitch. 5:52 Sunset. Started at 5:40. 35F

Went down the east side of the mountain to Poverty Creek. The hillside was fairly clear but steep and rocky at times. A trail would be feasible but a lot of work and a tough climb. Walked down the creek a bit but hit a large creek crossing and I wasn't interested in crossing in my shorts in freezing temps. Saw some nice rock walls on the opposite cliff.

Ran up Straley Valley looking for a way back up the mountain. No luck. There were lots of rhodos in the creek. Ended up making it up but not until after the private fields.

A lot of deer carcasses along the road. Gross. Had to keep Zitch away.

Trail Running 40:57 [2] 3.47 mi (11:48 / mi) +992ft 9:17 / mi
shoes: Scott Kinabalu

Finally something that more resembled a run. Zitch came along. I think it was a bit warm for him (55F).

Tried to run the loop I am currently considering. Still having some trouble when I hit the reentrant. Ended up coming down the farther spur. It was fine but meant more travel in the mess at the bottom.

The top of the ridge is almost completely private property. There is one spot along the ridge where it crosses and then the top of the mountain will need some rerouting as well.

Got out with Z just before the sun went down. Started at 5:35 sunset at 5:47. Sunset was pretty awesome. Tried to spend some time actually running. 55F

Found a short trail on the way back up the mountain. Also explored the ATV trail along the ridge. I seemed to be following the boundary line but it was too dark to know for sure. Pretty sure I turned into private property when I turned south. Didn't realize that was Poverty Creek Rd either.

Finished just before it was too dark to run.
