Orienteering - race 56:10 [3] 5.25 mi (10:42 / mi)

Compass sport cup. Blue women. INT win!

Perhaps not my finest hour.

To 1 really confused as I ran down a path that seems to be the right way, but no path appeared on the other side of the track. Odd. The path I had run down was a different one though, under the purple line. Bummer. The contours were obvious, so I just used them, but I quickly found thatthus was a v bramble forest. Nailed 2. Took the straightly line through the semi open forest to 3, but was loosing a lot of blood due to the extensive brambles so bailed out to a track.

4 - classic mupperty 1. Ran down the wrong track out of 3. Didn’t even notice that the open was on my right, not my left as it ought to have been. 5 fine. To 6 I headed through the green as it was the nicest part of the forest. Ok route.

7 cut a corner. Bad move. The forest is shite. Cut a corner to 8. Again, bad move. The open is shite too. 9 ok. I was dying around this bit.

10 looked painfully hilly, but I felt better around here. Missed the control a bit. 11, fine.

12 - peak muppetry. World class inemptitued. I just thought I’d come down a re entrant to the right of the line, when I was on the line. So I ‘corrected’ myself by running West for a bit, and up a hill by some green but the ride never appeared. I was lost. On the white course. Eventually relocated. 13 fine but cut down too soon to 14. Damn I was crap.

XC / road / hill race 1:24:00 [3] 6.8 mi (12:21 / mi)

Fra leg 2.

Leg 1 stopped to help someone who had head butted a rock by accident, so we were a fair bit down at the start. Passing a lot of people up the narrow path at the start. I had problems with my feet cramping too, and had to stop a few times. Sarah is an amazing up hill runner, and I was holding her back. She is not a good descender though - even worse than me - and we lost time here too. It was great fun though, and she’s a great person to pair with.

Laura and Claire G did well on 3, and Jill was excellent on 4. Our leg 1 was 5th woman at the top of the climb on leg 1, then finished 20th woman after patching up the injured participant so I think we could have been 10mins quicker. We were not good enough to win today, but we would have been in the mix for Silver one bronze. Finished 5th.

Note

Walked the kids up to Silver Howe and took Laurence around some of my Lakes 5 course. Talked about contours. I never tell him how to orienteer, so this assuaged my parental guilt at turfing him out on courses and expecting him to come back a bit. Ray took Lucy out on Laurence's orange course from the Lakes 5. Not sure she is ready to go around on Sunday. Against kids 6 years older than her...

Note

No running as I am a bit tired. Took the kids up Seat Sandal instead. Lucy tells me I run down hill like a robot.

Cross training 3:00:00 [3]

Ride with the kids and Ray. Lucy is so ridiculously strong fromhaving my legs and going to go ride, that we could go up some pretty big hills without having to get off. Like Red Bank (High Close) Langdale to Grasmere direction. She is too scared to ride down the other side though. We set off on the bridleway from Grasmere to Ambleside, by the tarns. Good practice for the cyclocross race that I aim to do at some point. I think I need to change my tyres from slicks though.

Then clappersgate, Skelwith Bridge (for cake) Elterwater and back.

Off-road running 1:17:26 [3] 5.95 mi (13:01 / mi)

Jogged over to Grasmere (tarn) while the others cycled, and acted as Ray and Lucy’s Open water swim emergency contact. Then set off up Loughrigg then through High Close to Silver Howe, after coming back down past the Lakes 5 start / finish. Lovely evening. Tired, and really inflamed big left toe tendinitis. I’ve got to start resting for the weekend.

Trail running 47:20 [3] 5.26 mi (9:00 / mi)

After a morning walk to Rydal and back withGrandma, I stole a chance for a quick run. Back to Rydal, down to the Lakes, round and back to Grasmere. Nice. Felt good.
