Back to Wallington :-(

Tired after the overnight flight, and feeling sluggish, but picked up the pace in the second half. Not windy at least.

Road running 39:56 [3] 5.0 mi (7:59 / mi)

Durban prom. 6am but so hot, it felt like my innards were slowly cooking. Again, very windy.

Road running 50:13 [3] 5.56 mi (9:02 / mi)

Very early pre-flight Simon’s Town jog into another full on gale. Getting sick of this wind. Compensated by some stunning views of sunrise over the East Cape peninsular. Legs v sore. Onward to Durban.

Road running 49:05 [3] 5.3 mi (9:16 / mi)

Today we went up Table Mountain early. We set off at 8, and headed up the Platten-something gorge. Lucy and Laurence were going well, until that is we got 2/3rds of the way up and it got very windy indeed, the wind funneled down the gorge. Lucy was scared she was going to get blown away and I was too, so I held her hand and scrambled up a very steep and rocky path one-handed into full on gale. Hmm. Challenging. The cable car down that we had promised did not materialize as it was cancelled due to the wind so we headed back down, my hoped-for jaunt at the top not materializing - *sigh*. Then botanical gardens, wine tasting, then shopping and home, exhausted. Another 5 mile drag with a KILLER last half mile. Ouch.

Off-road running 53:11 [3] 5.07 mi (10:29 / mi)

In Cape Town. We killed time at the waterfront before heading over to the Robben Island departure area, only to find that due to a light breeze the tour had been cancelled. With not enough time to head up Table Mountain (Tuesday’s plan) left we went to tourist info and bought a Table Mountain map. “I want to walk up a hill today too” said Lucy, which was the biggest shock I have had all holiday (7 year olds hate hill walks, unless you can rope in a few of their friends). So we drove to the height of the lower cable car for Table Mountain and Ray and the Kids set off. I did a flatter 4 miles around signal mountain before heading off after them. I stopped the watch when it got too rocky to run. The last 500m was a fairly precipitous scramble, which Lucy happily ran up in crocs and I had to take lots of deep breaths to stop myself hyperventilating on.
