Trail running 25:06 [3] 3.15 mi (7:58 / mi)
slept:5.5

Laurence was ill all night. No sleep. Then get up, pack for the kids, drive them to Oban, then spent a few hours with them on dad's boat before driving back. Tiring. We parked at the callendar end of loch venacher, and set off running in the rob Roy way. I did 12mins up a steep rough track at ray pace, then left him to it and ran back, doing a loop to make 25mins. Calf felt ok. Slight awareness to awareness. 7/10.

What's next Kim? I can't wait to find out!

Cycle commute 2:12:30 [3] 30.27 mi (4:23 / mi)

Then onto my bike. Cycled to callendar, then got on the a81 to aberfoyle, then over dukes pass to loch katrine, and back via the south side of loch v to callendar, where ray was waiting. Fun. I am pooped now though.

Trail running 20:00 [3] 2.3 mi (8:42 / mi)
slept:10.0

Ahhhh. Sleeping tablet followed by kids turning the tv on by themselves. In laws left today. Too windy for cycling, but otherwise life is better.

HBT handicap. This is a 4 mile handicapped hill run around Arthur's seat, with 2 mandatory drinks stops, 20 downhill press ups at half way, and a balloon modelling challenge before being allowed to finish. Drunken 4 mile hill race a few weeks before woc with a dodgy calf? Perfect prep!

Ray took the race unfortunately, leaving me running down to the start via a lap of the bog. 20mins. Non pain. Minimal awareness to awareness towards the end. This was exciting though as I ran up a hill (pollock to the col) and down a hill, then round the bog is quite uneven too, all to no ill effects. Calf even held when I hit a ruck and did my ankle a little on the same leg. So the best run yet, tho I couldn't ice after as I was doing childcare for the next few hours, and it stiffened up a lot. 7/10

Note

Bob's in the evening for a massage.

It has been a bit of a tough day. I am feeling the pressure of 2.5 weeks to go from jogging on flat Tarmac to going all out in terrain. The easiest thing to do would be to pull out of woc now, then I would know, and I would be able to stop maddening thoughts going around in my head. But that's the easy way out. I don't feel I have lost any fitness recently and there is still a chance (a good chance apparently) that I can be 100% at woc so I have to force myself to keep geeking and pushing and focussing and believing. It's is not at all easy though, and is slowly driving me mad.

Road running 15:00 [3] 2.0 mi (7:30 / mi)
slept:7.0

This was ok, slight awareness level, until it got to 11 mins then it gradually got worse to definite awareness. No pain today so progress. 5/10. I have been v down about this today, so it cheered me up to see some unexpected progress. No cycling due to some childcare issues - sigh!

Cycle commute 30:00 [3] 7.2 mi (4:10 / mi)
slept:6.0

Fun. Nice morning.

Road running 10:00 [3] 1.3 mi (7:42 / mi)

I was feeling good for the first few minutes. Only slight awareness of the calf pain. Then I went round a corner, and nearly ran into someone. I swerved only slightly, but the uneven footstrike pulled the problem bit of calf, and it was back to being painful. I stopped, couldn't decide whether to go on but I did. It settled back down quite quickly, and wasn't painful as such but I was very aware of it. At one point it twinged again. I think I must have picked up the pace and was running on my toes a bit more.

So the smallest of uneven footstrike can cause a lot of pain, but it is settling down quite a bit after. 5/10.

I try not to spend all of these runs thinking about how bad it is or isn't, and how long it will take to get better, but it is hard not to obsess.
1 PM

Cycle commute 52:56 [3] 12.6 mi (4:12 / mi)

Same route as yesterday.

Its looking good for my aim of a 250 mile week. Or I was thinking that it was looking good, with an afternoon off lined up for tomorrow, and a long saturday morning ride planned, but the weather forecast is looking grim.
5 PM

Cycle commute 1:30:00 [3] 19.0 mi (4:44 / mi)

Cycled home, via dalmeny, naturally. Forgot to start garmin annoyingly so this is a bit of a guess.

Cycle commute 30:00 [3] 7.3 mi (4:07 / mi)
slept:9.0

Bed at 9 with new sleeping tablets. One of the Z drugs, which seems an appropriate name. Went to bed with swollen glands, a big headache and a sore throat, woke up feeling fine. I am going to continue to eat as much fruit and veg as poss to see if I can hold it off.
8 AM

Road running 10:00 [3] 1.25 mi (8:00 / mi)

Kim's training day 2. 10 min run. I had been feeling calf pain in the morning, so was gritting my teeth when I started, but it was ok. Awareness, fading to slight awareness. No actual big pain. 6/10. I am too pesssimistic to believe that this is big progress yet, but an optimist would be happy!
1 PM

Cycle commute 55:00 [3] 12.62 mi (4:21 / mi)

Cycling fun at lunchtime.

Contemplating a route for this Sunday. We have to drop the kids off in Oban and I might suggest Ray does it as I play on my bike. Do any of the fvo-ers know if you can cycle along the south side of the loch that is between Loch Katrine and Callendar? I don't fancy the road. My bike has pretty skinny, pretty bald tyres. Ta.
6 PM

Cycle commute 1:28:00 [3] 16.3 mi (5:24 / mi)

Bike hill reps.

5:32 (with bag) 5:07, 5:02, 5:05 and I forgot to look at when I started the last one. I weighed the bag when I get home. 4.1kg of useless extra weight really slows you down.

7 AM

Cycle commute 30:00 [3] 7.5 mi (4:00 / mi)
slept:6.0

2 sick kids = minimal sleep. Leg feeling better for the massage last night. Spirit buoyed by Bob's excellent chat. I actually did some strength and conditioning last night too, which I forgot to add to my training. Attempting to bench press my kids. I haven't tried this for 6 months or so, and sad to say I can no longer do it. 25kg of writhing ticklish lump - fail.

Real cycling mileage this week to cheer myself up. I might aim for a 250 mile week.
1 PM

Cycle commute 47:00 [3] 11.2 mi (4:12 / mi)

Balerno lunchtime loop.
5 PM

Road running 5:00 [3] 0.62 mi (8:04 / mi)

Training as instructed by Kim. 5 mins. It was certainly noticeable, and really quite painful, but I could keep going without changing style. If 10/10 is great, 1/10 is not do able, this was maybe 3-4/10
6 PM

Cycle commute 30:00 [3] 7.5 mi (4:00 / mi)

Cycle straight home from work as I am feeling a bit under the weather. Sore throat, glands, tired, blah blah blah.

Woc team now up

I think the selections are great. It's so exciting to have two new girls in the forest team. When I first got to woc in 2011 I felt like a bit of a fraud as I didn't even rely try that much to make it. The standard was pretty low. Now in 2015 the standard is much higher in the women's team, and Jess and Charlotte have had to really work to make the team. So good to see. I feel much freer to walk away at the end of this year if I choose.
7 AM

Cycle commute 30:00 [3] 7.5 mi (4:00 / mi)
slept:7.0

Woken at 5:30 by Lucy. She picked up my Glen Affric map, which has the women's 1999 course on it. She asked me to guess how many contorls were on the course. I guessed 18, cause I knew there were. Apparently I was wrong, cause you have to find the start and the finish too so they count. On the long leg, she said she was going to run in a big loop, because that would be much prettier. Both good points. Top tips from a 5yold.
1 PM

Cycle commute 1:23:55 [3] 17.34 mi (4:50 / mi)

Nick said go cycling, so I went cycling.

Cycle rides to me are an excuse to go on a cafe crawl. I set off on the canal to Linlthgow. I have never done this route before. It was very muddy, and bumpy and narrow. It was fun enough on my commuter bike with its skinny wheels, but totally exhausting. Every bone got shaken continually. It was slow. Welcome break at the canal cafe. It did no sandwiches, but did have a fire, and they didn't mind me being caked in mud head to foot. Ah well, scone for lunch, followed by a tunnocks tea cake chaser.
3 PM

Cycle commute 1:15:27 [3] 19.11 mi (3:57 / mi)

I was a bit behind schedule after the canal being slow. Onto the road, enjoying going a bit faster again, to south queensferry then dalmeny on the whizzy new cycle path to crammond, and along the front to the haven cafe, at newhaven. One of the best. It would be rude not to stop.

They reccomended something called dream slice. It was good. Chocolate base, then coconut mixed with evaporated milk, on top of that caramel, then another thick layer of chocolate. It came in a big slab form. I was not far from home, but such a sugar boost necessitated an extra bit.
4 PM

Cycle commute 46:29 [3] 9.7 mi (4:48 / mi)

Newhaven to Musselburgh and up the innocent railway home.

So I have 4 hours or so to kill from work on Friday. Any cafe recommendations in west lothian.
