Orienteering - race 43:30 [3] 4.06 mi (10:43 / mi)
slept:4.5

Another sad girl all night - Unfortunately for Charlotte Watson's parents that were rough camping next to us.

Scottish relays class 8+, first leg, on course A.

This felt a bit like that bit of four weddings and a funeral where Hugh Grant ends up sitting on a table at a wedding with all of his ex girlfriends. Lined up at the start with most of the blokes that I beat the day before (Al, Andy, Roger, Ross) and a few other ones for fun (Jon X, the Gardner brothers, Rich Guilliame, Martin Ward). Hollie was there doing the women's open. Phew.

Everyone tanked it off at the start. Apparently the M18's had decided to take the piss with the speed of the start. It worked. I was immediately off the back. Some of the longer gaffles, and twisting my ankle again going to 4, meant I was behind. Then the hill to 5 I was pulling them back, and was back with Jon, big jon, Hollie etc after 5. Caught up with Ed N at 7, slight wobble at 8, then straight to 9 and there's Jon x again, picking up time taking a route through what was marked as green on the map, but was obviously quicker than mapped. Straight to 10, by myself now, and nailed it. Caught Al and Andy here, as well as a few others. Then I was with Al at the butterflies (we had opposite gaffles), but the heather was sapping and the control after the butterflies he started pulling away. Then the next one I over shot v slightly, dropped 20secs or so and Andy got passed me. He then maintained about a 10m gap to the end. He laughingly said at the end that there was no way he was letting me pass him. Bummer. I'll get him next time. Roger got me by 3 mins, much to his relief.

It was fun, and a lot of learning. I could do with increasing the speed of my starts, but it really is true that people start coming back to you really quickly after they sprint off at the start.

Home in time to spend three hours deep cleaning the house in the hope of getting rid of dust mites to calm the excema down.

Orienteering - race 1:05:09 [3] 6.8 mi (9:35 / mi)
slept:5.2

Lucy's eczema is worse than ever.

Scottish champs. 10.5k. i ran 6.8 miles. course 2 (w21e, m18/20/35/40)

Weary form a bad week of sleep. I was looking forward to trying out some new things today though, so mildly up for it. I was chatting to Jaimie and Toni O'D at the start. Apparently Al had complained to Jaimie that I was picking on the m35/40's at Blakeholme, and why didn't I run m21 instead? To which Jaimie said that maybe I thought it was really funny beating all my old friends... Spot on!

So I had Will Hensman starting 3 mins ahead of me and I was giving him some shit at the start about when I was going to catch him. I hoped I wouldn't though as I find it dull running with others. Set off to one sticking to the heather while I got into the map. Overshot it a bit as I couldn't fit the veg. To two I had a good easy plan, pegged it out of the control and went over my ankle. Stopped, hobbled, walked then ran. Ok. The control was really tucked in and I didn't see it at first. To 3 easy plan up the ride but needed a better point to come off it at. Dropped 30secs + 4 made the ground fit before setting off and could see the feature. 5 bearing, along the hill, then left. Control tucked in again.6 run hard to the stream before and make it fit after. Ok. Saw will going in. Damn. Bearing to 7 poor. 15secs +. Fine to 8. Will was going offline so I got ahead. 9 will was back on me as you could see it miles away. 10 easy. 11 stream, boulder, bearing and read the trees. 12 bearing. Made it fit. Easy. 13 couldn't really see the terrain as will was right in front. He went a bit right, so I got it. 14 was weird. The blue over the open confused me. I stopped too soon. Kept going though and got it. 15 I went up the reentrant and will did the ride. I was quicker as my route made it easier to see the contours. 16 bearing, right of the clearing at half way, so knew I needed to turn left after the gorge. Good.

17 I went straight and was trying to ignore the veg in the middle and just get through on a rough bearing, but it was v weird. Came out and checked direction and was ok, but was back with will who went around the top. He was running hard but banana-ing, so I was navigating, but he was always about. 18-19-20 easy. 21 the map was odd so lost some time. I was trying to judge using the fences, but used the wrong one 30+. 22 bearing, and could see it through the trees quite a way off. The rest was downhill and easy. I tripped and whacked my knee going to the last control, so dropped a bit here, but not too much time, and managed to beat Hollie and Roger by 2 secs, (and Jase, Will, Al, Andy Simpson, Ray, Rosco, Fraser etc etc). Andy P got me though, as did some of those pesky kids. Not the most inspirational of areas for me.

Need to do some more glutes work.

Jess broke her elbow too. Bummer. :-(

Achilles not 100%. I think it will be back to 100% tomorrow.

Tempo run 43:45 [3] 6.2 mi (7:03 / mi)
slept:8.0

Ignored Lucy crying last night and let Ray deal with it. Nice. Got to get her another appointment at the dermatology dept at the hospital before I go mad through lack of sleep.

Wasn't 100% pleased with my achilles yesterday, and it wasn't great this morning. 10miles hard planned, on the canal. Don't want to miss training as this really annoys me, and I didn't even get to cycle today, but 10miles hard on a hard surface is only going to be trouble, but I am only cycling tomorrow and think it will settle regardless with 48hours off running. Dilemma, dilemma, dilemma.

All the pondering got the adrenaline going, so I decided on a slight compromise - HW loop hard. That was 10k, with 4.5k of undulating woodchip / mud / gravel / track in the middle. Felt good. Lost momentum and rythym on the hilly muddy bit after the woodchip, but got it back again later. Calf hurt from half way, but achilles was ok - not sore but feeling a bit weak. It should have recovered completely by Saturday. Risky, but I think I got away with it. Note to self: intervals followed by lack of sleep, followed by a run is still too much.
7:02, 7:23, 7:48, 7:21, 6:28, 6:27, 6:18 (pace). I think 43:44 might be a new record. I'll have to check my excel. April 2012 - 44:00 was a PB, then in Jan 2013 lowered it to 43:19. I'll have to get under that by the end of June...

Felt shocking. Canal loop. Felt slightly better the further I went. Achilles slightly sore.

foolishly competitive on the way home. fun, but probably not what my legs wanted before intervals.

Intervals - long endurance 48:00 [3] 5.66 mi (8:29 / mi)

Martin's.

It was lonely on the long reps tonight. I had company on the first straight only as Graeme was being a wimp and doing the 1ks (sore leg, sob, blah, blah, blah...). I was the bigger wimp though, as I jacked the last one. What a loser. 4:38, 4:40, 4:44, 4:44. So hard on your own. Felt ok but things were getting tighter and tighter. Its ok, as I know I am going ok on my long runs. Need to man up a bit. It would be interested to see how I would run it if I had some fast company. Might give Graeme a 10sec start next time...

Off-road running 1:38:45 [3] 10.66 mi (9:16 / mi)
slept:9.0

9 hours sleep and then another mid morning kip in the sunshine at drumlangrig castle. Followed by lots of roly-poly races. Blurgh! Roly-poly-ing gets so much more nauseating the older you get. Try it as an adult - it's horrific!

Anyway, I dragged myself out of my happy, relaxed, fug and got dropped off at flotterstone. 1.5miles along the asphalt, right to the col, then right along the tops, hillend, fairmilehead, top of braids, golf course, fields, and back past Cameron toll. Felt v good. Going strong at the end. 7:30min miling up from Cameron toll home. Great weekend. Happy family. Feeling good running.
