Orienteering - race 1:11:57 [3] 9.0 km (8:00 / km)

Northern champs. Epoc. W21e.

I enjoyed today's physical long course. It was tough but fun.

Start -1 bearing. Glad to be able to get there before Jenny j's dad, who was putting up some fight!
2 - bearing, fine.
3 - went straight. It was fine underfoot, and saw some people punching it from a distance.
4 - straight. Tussocks but still moving ok so good.
5 - took some peering at with a 1:15 but fine.
6 - sort of gave up peering at the 1:15 as my map was a bit worn and it was too wet for my magnifier to work. I ran in the general direction just sort of hoping but would be ok. Big mistake. 2mins + dropped.
7 - this was really annoying as I was on line fine but had lost confidence from last control so went and checked out the one at the stream end. Which obviously wasn't mine. 1min.
8 - fine. Used the houses beyond.
9 - fine.
10 - straight, nice running.
11 - easy,
12 - really hard to stay on my feet. Was going fine then lost confidence and went right at the last minute. Relocated off a boulder with a control on. 30secs +.
13 - dropped about 15 secs as I thought the control was in the woods not the open. Map disintegrating.
14 - fine. Poor route but fine.
15 - really ripped tights over this crossing point. I think if I was make I'd have had made more of an effort to clear this.
16 - fine. Stuck in the rhodis but fine.
17 - couldn't see the gully on the map. I thought it was an index contour, but went to the centre if the circle and found the control.
18 - I went high. Good route.
19 - I went high. Good route.
20 - punched the wrong control first obviously.
Really jogged the run in.

Good race. Felt strong and fit. Achillies held up well. Terrible weather, but epoc did a great job.

Warm down with jon x yackking about woc. i'll keep my views on this for after the selections are announced. The girls team is the least of the selectors worries though! There are more boys that have absolutely justified their place in the woc team than the places available. I feel sorry for the selectors, and of course those who are going to miss out. All of the guys that deserve places are dedicated, professional orienteers as well as being lovely people who have worked hard for their performances. That some of them have to miss out is not pretty.
