Note

No running. The vomiting big goes on. Feeling rough!

Saturday Jan 30, 2016 #

Trail running 1:01:20 [3] 5.7 mi (10:46 / mi)

Single parent again as the boys headed up to Forres. I managed to escape vomiting Veronica by handing her over to auntie Fran. I bet she thought I'd stop doing this now I am not woc training. Up to the top of Arthur's seat in a roundabout way, then blackford hill, hermitage and over to fran's. Leg felt ok, feet are a bit plantar fasciitis-y tonight. Maybe the frostbite on the soles of my feet is finally going away, bringing back pain sensations. Might have to spend a few hours running around in the snow barefoot to rectify the situation.

Friday Jan 29, 2016 #

Note

I felt very drained and quite nauseous today. Lucy was still off school, so I took the day off work, and we spent the day doing a jigsaw. Too ill for running, and I was single-parenting all day so it was just as well.

Trail running 42:00 [3] 5.25 mi (8:00 / mi)

Headed off from work to get a lunctime run in. Set off on the HW route. I thought it would be fun to find a bit of mud and some water hazards too, and the path around HW usually has both after a rainy spell. I found both. Maybe a bit more water than I anticipated. I was running n to s on the path going down the western perimeter when I saw the path was flooded. I ploughed on in to the stagnant water, thinking it would be knee high at worst, but stopped to walk when it got to mid thigh. It was a bit tricky when it was waist deep and I had to climb a semi submerged tree. I managed to stay on my feet though, and at no point had to start swimming. The HW students should be putting on a tough guy race this weekend as it is bound to ice over too. Fun

Calf problems I think stem from my lower left leg being twisted for some reason, as things don't feel at all right down the outside of the calf, and the tears / tightness / scar tissue is on the inside. Time to get a physio to look at it.

Wednesday Jan 27, 2016 #

Note

I'm in a world of vomit - and it is not mine. Exhausted.

Tuesday Jan 26, 2016 #

Road running 25:00 [3] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Oh gawd. Ray has started a running club at school but couldn't make week 2 as he had a meeting at work. Hence I was in the meadows with a bunch of p5/6/7s. The rain was biblical, as was the wind. I have only just warmed up. I survived though.

Monday Jan 25, 2016 #

Note

So tired I nearly had the day off work sick. Massage. Bob tells me the sore bit of my calf is really quite bad. A big solid lump. Which feels like progress in a way. I feel a bit more positive for getting some feedback.

Sunday Jan 24, 2016 #

Note

I think we are going to dodge the jk to go skiing, and go to the lakes weekend the weekend after instead. Terrain snobbery.

Orienteering - race 54:12 [3] 6.5 mi (8:20 / mi)

Big weekend blue

Fun. Enjoyed it more today. Calves hated the climbs, so I walked them. Going well. Lost a little (20secs) on the control which was between gorse, but the gorse had been removed. The control was correct, and I went to the right place and saw the control, but saw no gorse so turned around before checking the code, then turned back when I realised I was being thick.

I went straight 14-15 which was much slower than Ray who went around. I went straight up after dunsapie loch on the long leg, skirted around the top of the dry bowl thingy, then right, down the ridge above the bog. Ray took 3 mins out of me by going around the road. Poor. The rest was fine but is was tired and not pushing it, whereas he was racing JayH. Calf survived. Phew! Pleased with that. No result as my so didn't pick up 11 and 16. Ho hum. At least Ray hasn't "officially" beaten me yet this year. He has won the esoc club champs and has got loads of ranking points so is insufferable just now. "Maybe missing out on the british long champs and esoc club champs on your inability to register punches is a good thing as it means you may concentrate on looking for the unit to flash in future" (I am increasingly deaf to si frequency). Gee thanks Ray.

Trail running 15:00 [3] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Shadowing Olly and Laurence around the white. They both went around by themselves, and Laurence only needed help getting past the dogs. Lucy and Ted did the course after with Pete. 4 very happy kids indeed. A bit of a fail results-wise for me, but a top weekend of fun with some great kids.

Orienteering - race 12:00 [3] 1.0 mi (12:00 / mi)

Big weekend urban.

My calf was really crap. Arrggghh. To start or not to start. I started. It was too sore. I couldn't run 100% all out, so there was no point really. Stopped when I got some nasty twinges going to 8. Tiresome, but I might survive to manage tomorrow.

Road running 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Jogging

Friday Jan 22, 2016 #

Note

No yoga as I couldn't make the DVD work. Typical of today which has been my first :-( day in ages - ill, perma-crying children; missed out on a job I wanted; and loads of other crap.

Did some excruciating foam rolling. My calf is predictably shit, and is not going to survive much of tomorrow, but we'll see how far I get around. Gawd I an a good moaner...
7 PM

Road running 15:00 [3] 1.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Jogging there and back.

Orienteering - race 21:50 [3] 3.0 mi (7:17 / mi)

Calf sore but no damage. Didn't see the bit at 20-ish where there was a cut through, and missed number 13-ish by just not seeing it. The veg on this map is hard to see, so I ignored it and ran through were it looked as though it ought to be allowed. Afterwards I think this was an ok tactic. V unfit. Dying after 5 mins. I think maybe that that is what racing is supposed to be like. Lung busting.

I think I know kb too well for it to be much of a challenge or to be interesting. I am not sure I like sprint orienteering. I am not sure I like orienteering, but that's just cause I haven't been in a forest for many many months.

Wednesday Jan 20, 2016 #

Road running 28:12 [3] 3.8 mi (7:25 / mi)

I nearly died. So unfit. Calf held out though. This weekend is going to be painful. Roll on W40. Only a year to go.

Off-road running 38:00 [3] 4.0 mi (9:30 / mi)

Post interview jog from kb. Calf held up nicely.

Road running 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Picked up my v heavy bag that I had stashed at kb house then ran home, slowly.

Off-road running 25:00 [3] 2.7 mi (9:16 / mi)

From home, around the bog and back with a rather lame head torch. Slippy. Fun. Calf ached, but didn't 'go'.

Physio - general S&C 20:00 [3]

More yoga. It ridiculously satisfying.

Physio - general S&C 40:00 [3]

Rodney again. Love the guy. Feeling good. Physio and massage lined up for next week. Rehab program in progress.

Friday Jan 15, 2016 #

Off-road running 50:00 [3] 5.2 mi (9:37 / mi)

Aberdour.

Don bosco's woods, round the back of humbie, then my calf went as I hit a puddle that was surprisingly deep and stumbled. I walked for a bit and it seemed to recover so ran last the ingles farm, down the path to the start of Easter Aberdour then to starley burn on the high path and back via silver sands playing field. Calf not happy now though.

Physio - general S&C 15:00 [3]

Rodney, until I had to stop and do birthday party prep... Foam rollering too. Agony. Massage booked for Tuesday, and hopefully get to finally see the physio too.

Thursday Jan 14, 2016 #

Physio - general S&C 1:00:00 [3]

Tonight was yoga for athletes with Rodney, the DVD of choice for the high-mileage-but-ageing-and-often-injured trotettes apparently. I liked Rodney a lot. I couldn't get more cynical about yoga etc, but I have berm feeling taller and stronger after the past few sessions, and I am laughably inflexible. I wonder if I'll ever be able to do the splits again without dislocating my hip. Foam rollering too. My calf is still a bit sore though. Running tomorrow anyway.

Interviews next week for the jobs I applied for last night. Time well spent. If I get the job in kb it is only three days a week - loads of free time. If I ever get uninjured, I might have to train for woc again... Then again I think my body is catching up after four years of hard training - I can't seem to get out of bed in time to go training these days.

Wednesday Jan 13, 2016 #

Note

Spent the evening drinking beer and applying for jobs. Probably not a very wise combination.

Physio - general S&C 35:00 [3]

'Yogalaties' with the annoying Aussie again. But life is good. There might be the possibility of a job at kb which would be so much better than ep (and it's would be on even fewer hours than I am on now...) and Murray has killed that ludicrous Nopesport thread. Tfft!

Physio - general S&C 25:00 [3]

After a tip off from a friend in how to get less injured, I raided the charity shops of south Clark street for their yoga / Pilates DVD's. There are lots of them - plenty left for the rest of you Edinbuggers. I got 2 at 99p each. I am an exercise DVD Virgin so this was interesting. The first was Pilates with a smiley, v overenthusiastic American called Lara Hudson. 5 x 10mins workouts, liberally dosed with 'you're doing great' and 'nice job!' I did the flexibility one and it felt ok. I liked Lara. She didn't grate on me - unlike the antipodean 'yogalaties' lady, who's workout was pretty good, but kept telling you to inhale and exhale. I have a mental blank on this. Breathe in and breathe out I can understand. Inhale and exhale needs some thinking through each time, and by the time I have interpret it she has moved on to something else. I always seem to be doing the opposite anyway. She seemed to think you mainly wanted to do yogalaties to get more sexy - she kept saying how doing x, y, z would make you more sexy. It was distracting as my mind kept wandering as I tried to think through her logic, and failed.

Bit of foam rollering done too. V painful.

XC / road / hill race 8:00 [3] 1.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Only the first 1/4 of the exceptionally muddy Paxton XC done before having to retire. I couldn't walk at all today really, so trying to run was foolish. I retired after I realised that my inability to weight-bear on a fully straightened leg was hampering my performance somewhat.

Saturday Jan 9, 2016 #

Road running 8:00 [3] 1.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

An afternoon jog. Aborted as my calf was really bad and I wanted to save it for tomorrow's XC.

Wednesday Jan 6, 2016 #

12 PM

Off-road running 46:00 [3] 4.9 mi (9:23 / mi)

Skidding around Aberdour fields (forest behind jon bosco's, up the track going n, through humbie woods, a bit along to starlyhall, but the path was so muddy so I doubled back. Silver sands and home via the harbour). In trainers. It would have been fun in dobbs but was a bit too much of a mud-fest in trainers.

Tuesday Jan 5, 2016 #

Trail running 51:00 [3] 5.76 mi (8:51 / mi)

Not v accurate b&b as I got lost in the mist on braids and had a diversion at blackford hill, and went home via tesco. Nice to be out. Still coughing up loads.

Note

Life is never dull.

Ray ran from Milngavie to Balmaha yesterday in highland fling training. 20miles, a bit over 3 hours (muddy trail). Ray set off from Balmaha at 10. I drove with the kids to Crianlarich, with a meeting time of 4 and a bit hours probably (30miles). Then I'll go for a nice run, meeting them in the cafe in Tyndrum. 4 hours, no sign of Ray. 5 hours, still no sign of Ray. 6 hours, still no sign of Ray. It is 4pm and rapidly getting darker. He has a hat, gloves, pertex, cash, phone (no reception), Jersey some water an a bit of Christmas cake (we were meeting for late lunch). No head torch.

Dilemma - when do I call the police??? I call the friend of ours who is police (and has tried and failed the highland fling so knows the course). Stevie is worried, but calm. We have misjudged the 30miles apparently. The 5 miles north of inversnaid takes 3 hours. If Ray doesn't arrive by 5:15 Stevie will call mountain rescue. A frozen, soaked, exhausted and hungry Ray turns up at 4:50, having hit the wall with 10miles to go, the last mile being along a forest path in the pitch black. FFS! A rethink required for next time we do this sort of. thing. So no run for me.

Sunday Jan 3, 2016 #

5 PM

Trail running 45:10 [3] 5.0 mi (9:02 / mi)

We're in Balloch in Dumbartonshire for the evening. It was dark. I had 45mins. Head torch on, I headed West on the John Muir way for 2.5miles. It was up a big hill, and hit some nice off road muddy trackky moor-type stuff by the time I had to turn around. 26mins out, 19 back.

Calf was fine but left Achilles aching. Oh I can't be bothered with a new Achilles injury!

11 AM

Road running 20:00 [3] 2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Do I do the ESOC hair of the dog or don't I? Decided to do it at the last minute, so set off to blackford hill about exactly when we were supposed to be starting.

Orienteering - training 37:40 [3] 3.0 mi (12:33 / mi)

Poker-o around blackford hill. Ingenious design by the Lindsay's. 45 min score course, each control worth the same amount. Map memory. Get the map for 1 min at the start, and there is a map to look at at each control. You get dealt 5 cards at the start, and there are three cards at each control. You can swap one card with one of the cards in the bag at each control. You get bonus points added to your score depending on how good your poker hand is at the end.
I am crap at poker, and missed the start so was a bit confused with what to collect. Top of the suggestions on the list was a royal flush. I started with an ace and queen of hearts, and 10 controls of the 20 in had got the jack, king and 10. I jogged around to get the rest of the controls to head to the finish to claim a historic victory. 5 mins into the course my calf started hurting. It never 'went' though, so the gamble to keep going was worth it - packet of chocolate button won!

Still coughing and snotty, but bearable.
