4 x 4 mins in meadows. Hamstring was sore throughout and restircting stride length. Felt slow and unfit. Not good. Talked over the long and middle races, so have a plan and feel a bit better prepared. Good.

And my knee hurts again!!!!!! FFS!!!!!
9 PM

Physio - general S&C 15:00 [3]

Knee and back stuff and core. Shouldn't have done the back stuff as i think i should have left what the chiropractor did well alone. something cricked badly the wrong way. Not feeling good. Bad day's training.

Cross training 35:00 [3]

Cycle to work. Felt good, if a little queasy. Up in the nihght with a vomiting Lucy. Nice. Found an extra pile of sick in the very thick bedroom rug when skidded on it. Could have done with more sleep. Hard to get to sleep last night when i didn't run enough yesterday too.

Road running 13:00 [3] 1.7 mi (7:39 / mi)
slept:5.5

Post cycle jog. Would have felt excellent, if the hamstring niggle wasn't there. Apart from that legs raring to go. Could be a good weekend.
1 PM

Intervals - short and speedy 30:00 [3] 3.5 mi (8:34 / mi)

10 x 1min on 30secs off. Felt good and fast. 10 is enough to boost my confjdence without leaving me crocked.
4 PM

Cross training 35:00 [3]

Cycle home

Road running 8:00 [3] 1.0 mi (8:00 / mi)

Run up to physio.

She tells me it is mainly sciatia, should be gone in a few weeks with lots of spikey ball stuff. For me this is a bit of a result. The prospect of running pain free for the first time since january in a few weeks time is pretty exciting.

She's got the winning students orienteers now apparently. Poor her!

6 AM

Cross training 40:00 [3]
slept:6.0

Cycle to work. not enough sleep. Tired.

Road running 13:46 [3] 1.67 mi (8:15 / mi)

4 PM

Cross training 35:00 [3]

Cylce home. Great fun competitive cycle along the canal. Closed some bloke down, and he looked over his shoulder, saw I was a girl, busted a gut to get away. No chance. He kept looking over his shoulder, to see me there, 3m back, smiling and admiring the view, and kept busting a gut to get away. Great fun! Just because we are girls doesn't mean you are fitter than us you sexist pig.
No other training today as I am totally whacked and my hamstring is really not happy today.

10 AM

Orienteering - race 1:14:00 [3] 6.0 mi (12:20 / mi)
slept:8.5

Planned to do glen dye but yesterday was totally sttessy and had a cold so it didn't happen. Went to esoc long o instead and did short. It was good. Gel after 40 mins. Felt excellent, much better than pexpected, very strong up the hills and strong to the end. i was pootling a bit tho, you know when you know the quickest route is pegging it straight, but you choose a slightly different route as the running looks more pleasant etc. Only time loss no 11, which i would possibly have hung differently...

Hamstring / glutes impede my stride length in r leg. Hmmmm.

Stacks of sleep as stevie stayed over and the kids woke him up to play instead

Ran 6.87 miles
9 PM

Physio - general S&C 15:00 [3]

Saturday May 26, 2012 #

9 PM

Road running 46:00 [3] 6.3 mi (7:18 / mi)
slept:5.5

Another wild saturday night. Stressful day (woken at 5 when the kids got up. They were then tired and grumpy all day. As was i). set off for a jog. Up to kb, kb5 course (34:30, not going into the kb grounds) and back. was going to be a jog but getting the frustrations of the day out meant i went a bit quicker than intended. Body was willing, hamstring not. Boo! Too tired to go to glen dye tomorrow. double boo!

Physio - general S&C 15:00 [3]

Stretching, back stuff, foam roller etc. Followed by catching features. Its all rock'n'roll here!

7 AM

Off-road running 40:00 [3] 5.5 mi (7:16 / mi)

Busy day. Getting the run in early. Probably won't get time for more later. 3 laps of the meadows. Nice. With ipod so glad no-one spotted me or i would be whanged out of hbt. the volume of rubbish left from bbq's all over the grass was staggering!

Wednesday May 23, 2012 #

6 AM

Cross training 35:00 [3]
slept:6.0

Cycle to work. Could have done with more sleep.

Road running 13:00 [3] 1.5 mi (8:40 / mi)

Post cycle run. Going to have to get a physio appt for the hamstring problem that i have had since i got over the knee problem. it has been 3 weeks and still no improvement. Bupa means i only pay 20% of the costs but traipsing with the kids to firstly the gp for a referral letter then the physio is such a bore. Why can't my body just work properly for once! it didn't really affect my o-ing, buti would be loathe to do reps on it. At least being under the weather this week that won't be a problem.
4 PM

Cross training 35:00 [3]

Cycle home. Not feeling too inspired today. Hot, and when you have a cold that's a bit crap. Extra stuffy and headachey and tired. got a massage to look forward to tonight though, finding out the latest gossip from bob. Better go on a post cycle jog to get the worst of the tightness out of my quads.

Road running 15:00 [3] 2.0 mi (7:30 / mi)

Aforesaid post cycle run.
7 PM

Cross training 45:00 [3]

And that really was going to be it for the day until Ray pointed out that we had sold the car so more cycling to bob's & back for massage.

Bob said the hamstring problem is a very deep imflammation. He found the spot. It was sore. Now i know where to aim my spikey ball.

Note
(sick)

Ill. not that i didn't see that coming. really struggled to sleep in sweden, < 4 hours mostly, due to anxiety and stress over the races, stressing about study and inadequate curtains in the room. good timing tho. At least if i am ill now i won't be ill next week.

Sunday May 20, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Rest day. Travelling and studying and the kids a priority. Looked at the splits from yesterdays sprint. Down 17 secs to cat, 19 to the fastest on no 1, slowest of everyone. the start kite was in some trees to the left, and the other problem was there was a wooded section in line of view from the start line which was mapped as scattered trees which confused me. The scattered trees symbol on the grass symbol looked very much like rough open, so i couldn't make the trees i could see fit the map. Vroni, who helps the swiss team shouted herself hoarse at the team leaders meeting about it so i am glad it wasn't just me who thought it was poorly done. If i had done cat's split to no 1 i would have been 6th. Woulda, shoulda, coulda etcetc.

The week has shown that i really want to do sprint and long at woc. i don't know which race was more inspiring. They were both fun. The sprint was good for the amazing arena, and the forest bit at the start was fun, and i really enjoy non-british style sprinting. I found the long totally intimidating for the technical and physical challenge, and overcoming that was good (tho apparently i still lost way too much time...). the middle gave me a headache, too much detail, not enough running.

Orienteering - race 16:39 [3] 3.2 km (5:12 / km)

Eoc sprint final. 11th. so delighted. Dropped loads at no 1 as the start kite was hidden and didn't see it. Didn't see the splits but loads. 2, 3, 4 good. 5 went wrong way around feature, 6 shite route choice, 7 fine, 8 shite out of the control, 9 good, 10 dropped as i thought it would be on the top of the hill but it was beyond it, 11 nt convinced my route was quickest, ditto 12 but pleased. 13 easy, 14 could have been tidier, ditto 15, 16 and in dropped time on the run in.

So pleased. nice end to a nice set of races. I was petrified at the start, but some words from toni sorted me out. he has been incredible all week. I have learnt so much from him, trying to control my excitement / nerves to get out a good performance. I need to stay calm under pressure and always seek the best line, push myself to get my minute mistakes down to seconds. Can't wait for woc now.

no i am not running the relay as i need to get back to do studying. It has been a cool week. Good luck to the relay teams, and good luck to my roomie lucy b at jwoc. for such a youngster in such a big race she was awesome!

Orienteering - race 1:15:20 [3] 10.0 km (7:32 / km)

Eoc long. 21st.

What thepics fail to show is that the nice forest is covered in little stones and then moss. Slippy as hell and very hard to stay upright. We got copies of blank maps yesterday, and i was a little concerned. This course was always going to physically and technically mental!

To 1 my head was not on the job, and when i hit the forest it was hard to tell what was up and what was down so i invested the time to sort myself out. To 2 I was running along a ridge thinking i hope that i knew where i was, and i was right. Still totally not concentrating. Nice route to three with a 30sec swerve at the end. 4 scary but bearing and fine. Dropped about 15 secs. Nice route to 5 and i started getting into it. With a couple of tricky ones behind me i qas gaining in confidence. Went left of the control at the end and dropped over a minute. Stayed calm and thought the whole time. 6 fine, 7 fine maybe 15secs dropped getting to it. To 8 i had a very hilly route, left might have been better. Pleased to nail another one though. 9 i went up a mental steep hill amd down the other side to it at the bottom of a big reentrant. Each countour really is 5m, like a double decker bus. 9 - 10 pleased with my route. Came out after taking a drink at the control only 70% certain i had punched too. 11fine. 12 looked easy but lost concentration and maybe 30 - 45 secs. 12 - 13 good. 14 dropped time in the circle in the indistinct veg. Again 30 - 45 secs. 15, 16, 17 fine. 18, 19 billstam was reeling me in. Last bit felt amazing as i dug in with her and nailed the last loop. For a race that is totally not technically or physically my thing i am delighted. No stuff ups. Calm under pressure. Thinking rationally. Ok so a few mins quicker and i would have been more pleased with my position but from the course itself, i am absolutely buzzing. Felt so much stronger than yesterday, felt best at the end of the course. 2:30hrs after i finished and i feel like i could go out and get a 5k pb now. thanks to toni for being brilliant. No way i could have done that otherwise. This week has given me so much more confidence in my nav. As for the sprint - bring it on!

3 PM

Orienteering - race 39:20 [3]

Eoc middle. 20th.

Started very steady to no 1 and took a poor route choice (probably too safe - certainly very hilly). 2-5 was very tricky for me as my mind really struggles with very detailed maps, and this was certainly detailed. To 6 again straight was not great. Left around the road would have been better, or even right, less hilly, less brashed. The control was just behind a knoll in some felled - so that'll be the hill with the tv camera on it then!
7 easy, 8 looked really hard but a good bearing it was fine. Here billstam caught me, so i got distracted and dropped a bit to the next one. She joined in with me again on the way to 10though so not sure where she went. 10 &11 wee easy as both had tv cameras and crew. To 12 we took the same route and i took a nicer route to the control. 13, 14 good and i lost her then. Got confused just before 16 and didn't dig in enough to the end so dropped a few more places. Annoying!

Overall, a bit ho hum about it. It is an intense week and i will probably form an opinion about how happy i am later. Glad there were no big stuff ups though.

Off-road running 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

W/up

Orienteering - race 14:43 [3] 2.7 km (5:27 / km)

Eoc sprint. Fairly straightforward. Not much controversy. Calm, which is just as well as stan was at no 1 sniggering at those that missed it. Got confused going to the last one and dropped time. Qualified 6th. 4secs quicker would have seen me 3rd

Tuesday May 15, 2012 #

11 AM

Orienteering - race 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

W/up

Orienteering - race 45:39 [3] 5.5 km (8:18 / km)

Eoc long qually 9th.

Was pleased with the result, perhaps not so the race. Clean to 1, 2 was really really tricky. A boulder in some semi open felled. Lost 30secs early on being thick and really hesitant going in. Took 3 carefully too to find it. 3 - 4 was a long route choice pretty much the same as one i had looked at last night with toni.
Uphill on a path then tried to skirt around a few
contours at the top on an indistinct path but the veg
was shit and the path non-existant so hacked back
to.the path on the top of the hill. That was about 45
secs. The route in was really tricky too. To 5 i had the map the wrong way around and navigated 5-4 instead of 4-5. short leg so i got it with dropping only about 30 secs. 5-6 good but i got distracted at the very end and mucked about dropping 1:30-ish. 7 good. 8 was back into yesterday's green so steady. 9 lost about 20secs going around the houses a bit, 10 about 30secs, the rest fine. That's probably over 4 mins dropped so not good but everyone must have dropped as it was so tricky. nearly sh*t myself as i ran up the run in, as the commentators were yabbering about 16-17 place but i was 7th as i crossed the line so phew!

Really pleased with the calm way i am managing to orienteer this year. When i can contain the urge to panic when i don't find the control where i expect it to be, 5 min mistakes are reduced to 1min mistakes. Managing to stick to toni's mantra of invest the time in making a plan is really paying off. Tomorrow i hope to be able to qualify without it taking too much out of me.

Off-road running 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

W/up

Orienteering - race 25:09 [3] 4.0 km (6:17 / km)

Eoc middle selection. Heat a.

Calm at the start. Determined not to get distracted or to panic. Hesitant to an easy 1, dropped 20 secs at 2 being too far left then relocated easily, 3 fine, hesitant comibg into 4, dropped 10, 5,6,7,8 good, 9 too far right 15 secs, 10 good and 11 good and this is where minna caught me. She was ahead to 12 and i let myself go with the pace to 12 & 13, ticking off the features (i didn't know she was on my course). 13 - 14 there was a big hill. I jogged / walked as i was feeling surprisingly tired and was certain i had qualified well and knew i had a big race tomorrow. 4th. Pleased. I was 8th, 25secs off 2nd when minna caught me at 11 so am pleased with my running and performance. Got to keep a cool calm head for tomorrow now.

Note
(rest day)

On the train to mora. Getting excited now. Whatever happens its gonna be fun. Looking forward to sleeping more than 6 hours a night (tho i always sleep badly on these trips - too nervous. Stopped worrying about it. It doesn't affect my performance), looking forward to a fun team atmosphere, looking forward to getting away from other responsibilities and getting some headspace to study for a finance exam in 8 days time (i didn't get holiday from work this week but study days), and looking forward to fun races. Imagine, i'll have time to do a warm up (usually this is just the sprint to the start of the split start parent) and a warm down (i never ever have time for a warm down, that's why you never see one in ap...).

I'll miss lucy-lou-and-laurence-too.

Orienteering - training 51:00 [3] 6.2 mi (8:14 / mi)

Urban orienteering with murray and tess. Planned by toni. Some really interesting route choice, so good to run with tess to compare. Fun and sunny for once.

Looking forward to eoc. My hamstring problems will only be a problem really on the sprint hopefully. Don't think the terrain will suit me at all, but at least if my expectations are low i can only surprise myself. Hope to give some bored people sat at work a bit of
a laugh with my gps at least if i get really lost. Looking forward to catching up on some sleep when there.

Cross training 35:00 [3]

Cycle to work. Hamstring a bit ho hum. Hope to makeit to intervals.
4 PM

Cross training 35:00 [3]

Cycle home. Had to remind myself i was doing intervals later, and to save my dodgy legs and not get too competitive with the other commuters. So mr red panniers, i let you get away this once, but i'll get you next time!

Road running 10:00 [3]

Run up to nursery. Felt ok-ish so think i will go up to intervals. It will be really good cardio and hopefully won't set my hamstring back.
8 PM

Intervals - long endurance 40:00 [3] 4.5 mi (8:53 / mi)

Martin's. Only 3 due to niggles. Got what i wanted out of it. Confidence that i am the fittest i have ever been. 4:25, 4:23, 4:25. All on my ownsome. Looking forward to 2 weeks time when i can go for all 5 without worrying too much about trashing myself before future races. Hamstrings were ok, but the niggles were gradually mounting so 3 was fine.

Orienteering - race 22:00 [3] 4.1 km (5:22 / km)

BOC relay. Mens short. Fun. Ray mispunched - bummer for him. I was last leg and had no idea, so had fun passing Neil Conway and some junior (Jack Benham?) to come back in 1st place but no prize - boo! Running well - nearly sub 5min k's, but not quite. Good, proper planning unlike yesterday...

Saturday May 5, 2012 #

2 PM

Orienteering - race 1:25:00 [3] 11.0 km (7:44 / km)

Grrrr!! another shockingly shit british long run. My hamstring i could feel, which meant i wasn't throwing myself into it as i usually would, but my nav was crap as well. Dropped 15 secs at the start of 2-3, 1min close to 4, then 3mins at 12, about 4:30 on 16-17 (saw the oob, didn't see the uncrossable wall lines,
made the route choice crap, and execution even
worse), 21 1:30, 22 30secs and even 30secs not
finding a decent way down to the last control. 11:1
5 lost in all. Crappity crappity crap crap crap. Am i
ever going to win this race? i am hacked off with
such a crap performance, but not depressed by
it, as i was with my bad runs last year, so that is an improvement. Tho this is my first true 'claire has a shit run' that i have had this year so wait until i screw up eoc and the woc selection races. Then i will be hacked off and depressed. can i skive the prizegiving tomorrow? i can't be bothered to fake looking pleased to be on the podium...

Anyway, the route to improvement is concentration, planning & taking the time. Need to do more catching features to remind myself how easy it is to get lost, but last time i did cf it was a woc 2011 map and i nearly had a panic attack. Not good.

Friday May 4, 2012 #

Hamstring problems. Hooing to clear them up before tomorrow
